I like the ReBoots and, what's more, I actually consider them to be superior in every way to The Original Series. Had I not already developed a sentimental attachment to TOS, I would've very easily dismissed it in favour of the new movies. J.J. Abrams is brilliant and it's wonderful to finally see STAR TREK receiving such popular acceptance. The ingredients for such were always there and the pot's been stirred often, over yay, these many decades ... but only Abrams really knew the recipe. That's just how I feel ...

Rollocking good fun both of them. Bordering on the absurd in places, and much more violent than I am used to from Trek, but good movies in their own right.

I view them very differently from how I see the rest of the franchise though, I don't think they have captured the Star Trek feel, but have created something new and also good.

I think that The Wrath of Khan is far more violent than anything nuTrek has served up so far.

Since the stated goal was to survey "fans" (e.g. Star Trek fans), a Star Trek site would seem an ideal place to ask the question.

Yup...I do like them, overall. There's elements I absolutely LOVE and there's elements I could do without...but the general feeling I have toward them is positive. I'm looking forward to the next one. Should be interesting.

I think they're reasonably fun, entertaining blockbusters but they don't really feel like true Trek to me. There's a novelty value to seeing characters portrayed by other actors and there's a lot fan wank thrown in but it's all a bit superficial. To me, the reboots were necessary to keep the franchise alive and stop the rot but something is still missing. There's something cold about them

I think they are both excellent movies, and better than a good chunk of the previous ten films. Trek in it's previous form was on it's arse dead. It needed repackaging and re-branding for a modern audience and I think they have largely achieved that goal so far.

Nothing could be worse than the infernal pair Insurrection and Nemesis.

The poll question is too simple - it at least needs a "mixed feelings" option (or maybe "1 but not 2" or "2 but not 1", or a percentage of like-ness). I enjoyed ST09, but STID had plot problems. They both had an aggressive tone I dislike. Now a new team are working on ST3 I feel cautiously optimistic.

I neither like, nor dislike them. When Star Trek 2009 came out I thought it was fun to see a young crew, how they got together on the Enterprise and became the best crew in Starfleet at that time. But becoming a Starfleet Captain right out of the Academy was a little too much change. And it was a fun movie.

Then they attempted to redo Khan without a strong back story. In TWoK, Khan gave a good sumation of his back story that no matter your knowledge of Star Trek, you could understand why Khan hated Kirk. STID just doesn't have that emotional pull, but it was a fun movie.

So I neither like nor dislike them.

Yeah, it would be different, although probably not drastically. Different parts of this board have different types of fans. Not everyone visits this sub-forum on a regular basis, and while there are definitely those that hate the movies and make it a point to stick around like glue, I think that most disinterested people stick to the forums they like. If the poll were in Future of Trek, it would probably be pretty different because it seems like the people who hang out there want something different than what it is out now.

In STID's defense, the whole Khan backstory was kept generalized, and Khan wasn't even aware of the existence of one James T. Kirk until Khan was captured at Q'onoS....except for the brief glimpse he caught of Kirk at Daystrom when he was attacking the building. And then, neither knew truly who the other was.

And then, Khan's personal accounting was just a ruse for his ultimate pursuits which are gleaned by Kirk a little later, and revealed to the bridge crew via Spock Prime. But, in no case does either divination or revelation go so far into the backstory that it leaves newer audiences and neophytes confused.

In fact, I would venture to say that if you really look at it, STID is a clear cut invitation to newcomers to go back and watch The Wrath of Khan ....most newcomers are at least remotely aware of TWOK...which in turn provides just enough backstory to entice those same newcomers to then seek out the episode Space Seed. I'd dare say it's pretty clever. It's as if the producers of STID are saying: "We wouldn't be here without the incredible series thay inspired us. Go check it out!".

At least, that's how I like to think of it.

As for the fate of Khan, well, he's still alive. He and his crew have been put someplace safe and are being examined by top men. Top men. Somewhere along the way, Khan and his crew might escape captivity. And Khan's newfound wrath might be somewhat directed at Kirk, but will likely be borne full force at Spock. After all, Spock kicked his ass into submission in this universe.
