Simon and Schuster cuts 35 jobs

McCoy: Jim, where are you going to look in this whole galaxy? Where are you going to look for Marco's brain? How are you going to find it?

Kirk: I'll find it. See? It's right here, in the bottom drawer of his desk, along with some back issues of Hustler and a corn beef sandwich he ordered from the cafeteria last year.

McCoy: It doesn't matter. I can't restore it. I don't have the medical technique!

Kirk: It was taken out. It can be put back in.

McCoy: Wait...his brain, or the sandwich?

Kirk: Um....would anyone know the difference?

Kirk: "We'll have to take him with us."

McCoy: "Take... Take him where?"

Kirk: "In search of his brain, doctor."

Double the sentiments that Marco Palmieri has been classy; thanks for the hard work in the ST literatures, and best wishes for the future!

Really, it’s very touching, and even a little overwhelming.

Well, that's what you get for bringing us writers on board and doing stuff the audience loves...

I hope to land on my feet as soon as possible.

Well, I can't see you not...

And you know wherever you land there's going to be a load of Trek writers from these boards knocking on the doors five minutes later...

I'm very sorry to hear this Mr. Palmieri. While I'm new to post series literature, it has been some of the best stuff I've read.

You've been a good Captain of this ship. All the best in your future journeys. I know there will be many more.

After reading all posts on this subject, here are my thoughts:

1) It could have been worse and all the editors involved with Trek could have been laid off. (though they still can)

2) It's so disgusting how companies decide to fire people before Christmas instead of after. It's so wrong and selfish.

3) What will happen with the Titan line?

4) I doubt any changes will happen to the 2009 schedule

5) Just be glad that the entire Trek line wasn't suspended or canceled.

6) To save money, CBS might decide to merge departments which might cause losses to the media tie in lines.

Finally,

I am sorry for what happened to Marco during the Christmas season and his family and I wish him the best of luck. I also wish him a happy and healthy holiday season and best wishes for a happy new year.

This concerns me -- given the timing, part of me wonders if there's an upcoming clearing of the deck related to the new film. If there's a narrative reboot in Trek, might TPTB want to go in a new direction with the novels? Not canceling them outright, but shifting focus back to TOS-era novels? New timeline TOS era?

A number of new TOS-era titles have been announced already for 2009/10, coexisting alongside books set in other timeframes. While it's natural to expect a greater emphasis on TOS over the next couple of years (certainly in comparison to '08, when the TOS era was mostly avoided), I see no reason to fear that the 24th and 22nd centuries will be abandoned.

Meanwhile, Pocket has given an exclusive statement to TrekMovie.com about this move:

http://trekmovie.com/2008/12/08/lay...m-but-pocket-remains-committed-to-trek-books/
Jean Anne Rose, Publicity Director of Pocket Books, tells TrekMovie that the layoff of Palmieri was not related to Star Trek and how it is viewed at Pocket and was more of an overall restructuring at the company effecting every division. In addition, Rose said that Pocket was sticking with its current plans for Trek books for 2009 (although some dates may move around a bit). Rose emphasized "we remain committed to publishing a robust and energetic schedule Star Trek books moving forward."

TrekMovie's Anthony Pascale also has some nice things to say about Marco:
Although Pocket remains committed to Trek, Marco’s loss will still be felt within the Star Trek community. Marco had been with Pocket for eleven years and he is truly a fan of Trek and a passionate advocate for the Trek books. In recent years, he and Margaret have essentially been the ’show runners’ for franchise after the end of Trek on TV. Marco was active in fan outreach as well as being helpful to TrekMovie and other sites to help promote the Star Trek books.

I seriously doubt that this reflects any sort of editorial policy regarding the TREK line. Remember, this was part of larger act involving dozens of employees outside the TREK department. Chances are, the executives who made the decision weren't even thinking about TOS vs TNG or anything like that. If fact, they would probably stare at you blankly if you asked them about "new timelines" and such.

This was all about trimming the budget, that's all.

Margret however, not so much. She isn't one yo promote as much as Marco nor comment here as much as Marco did.

Different people work in different ways - my predecessors as editor of Star Trek Magazine didn't post on the boards to the extent that I do, but that doesn't mean that they were any less effective at their jobs because they chose not to do this. Margaret has given interviews to the magazine about the lines she's editing and I hope will continue to do so!

Please don't read anything else into my statement for support of Marco. I also value Margaret and if the situation were reversed, I would have written something similar for her, and she knows that. I have had many long (sometimes epic) conversations with Margaret about Trek and Trek books and she has been very helpful to us in our efforts to keep our readers up with Trek book news, previews and reviews.

Depends on the time and place. I first got to know Margaret when she ran the DC Comics TOS and TNG lines, and she had monthly interactions with the fanbase through the lettercols.

Don't forget, Marco wasn't active on this board for many months at a time, depending on his work commitments.

Wow, I'm behind - just read about this over on trekmovie and raced over here to read this thread. Damn, is all I have to say.

Good luck to all those who were laid off, may you all land on your feet.:techman:

Marco, thanks for your hard work and excellence with the current crop of Trek stories. It led directly into my return to reading Trek full-time again after a few years of being away. I will also never forget you personally calling me to congratulate me on my Titan starship design. Even though I didn't win the contest, you made me feel like I had. Good luck and thanks again.
