Sigh... I'm ashamed to admit it...

And yet there was battle armor in G.I. Joe that make the Delta-VI accelerator suits look tame and tasteful in comparison--Cobra Snake Battle Armor and the frakkin' huge two-story Space Bridgade Armor Bot are only two examples out of many ridiculous battle armor worn by both Joes and Cobra alike during the history of the franchise.

G.I. Joe has always had a slightly campy aspect to it due to it being based on a toyline, and the Delta-VI accelerator suits are the closest thing to a nod towards that end of the franchise, IMO...

Yes, COBRA had them, so give Cobra the frigging accelerator suits! The closest thing GIJOE had to that was Deep Six's dive suit. And again, nobody was playing Dodgeball with rocket-propelled munitions, no matter how "campy" the cartoon was!

Yeah, right. Suuurrre they weren't.

The accelerator suits are fine. And over-the-top stuff like them is very much in keeping with the G.I. Joe franchise.

But this "they raped my childhood thing" people have with various franchises is getting old...
:shifty:

Oddly, I don't recall giving a damn what you think about my feelings on the matter. You're above the whole "raped my childhood" thing. Goody for you.

I, however, freely and candidly admit that I would much rather see a GIJOE film that actually reflected the material I enjoyed than one that is simply over-the-top because "Well, duh the old stuff was over-the-top too" without including anything that made the old stuff entertaining in spite of its campiness. It's like making an idiotic Star Trek film just because there was some idiotic stuff in the old Star Trek! (Oh wait...)

Whoops. I must have hit a nerve there...

Yes, it is indeed very good for me to be above that kind of silly thing.

So you're going to see the film?

No, I just like to have the G.I. Joe movie logo as my avatar and have part of the cartoon catch phrase in my sig...I hate everything G.I. Joe with a passion you wouldn't believe!

Just asking. :)

So nothing about it bothers you? Because, you see, there are things about the film that bother me, and I'm terribly sorry that you find the things that bother me silly, but am I not entitled to have misgivings, or am I just supposed to throw caution to the wind and decide I'll like it just because you tell me I shouldn't have misgivings? I'd really like to know where I stand with you on that.

CHUD and Latino Review have positive reviews. CHUD said it was 'more fun than playing with the figures as kid' or something to that effect according to CBR.

you're allowed to have misgivings, but why not try watching it THEN bitching?

Of course, everybody's entitled to misgivings, but I do think we internet fanboys (and I use that term affectionately) tend to hold things up to an almost impossibly high standard at times that frequently prevents us from enjoying a lot of things. We're also very quick to say something sucks based solely on a thirty-second trailer or even without seeing it at all. That is what I find silly. There's nothing wrong with wanting a quality product, but sometimes we forget that the original source material [in this case, G.I. Joe] wasn't exactly Shakespeare to begin with.

I grew up with G.I. Joe ARAH--had the original 13 joes and vehicles introduced in '82, got the comics (starting with issue #1 by Marvel), saw the cartoons, even had the coloring books--but I've also liked different versions of G.I. Joe over the years (remember G.I. Joe: Extreme? G.I. Joe: Sigma Six?) so I've never been tied down to just one version of the franchise. I've pretty much liked them all.

As a result, I approached the movie as being yet another different take on G.I. Joe. To answer your first question about was there nothing about the movie that bothered me? Quite truthfully, I have to say no, there wasn't. The early publicity shots didn't bother me--indeed I liked them--and even the casting of Marlon Wayans as Ripcord didn't bother me (now having read the book, he's actually not as bad as you might think he'll be--reminds me more of Will Smith's character in Independence Day than anything else, actually). I like what they're doing with Scarlett, the Baroness, and Destro, as well as the totally new spin on Cobra Commander.

Haven't even seen the movie, but as I said in an earlier post, I know I would like to see a sequel already...

This reflects my feelings exactly. I want to see something before I fully judge it. I grant there have been films now and then that I haven't been interested, but I won't say "That movie sucks!", I'll say "I haven't seen it so I can't judge." Big difference.

As for Joe, I think the reason people use the "they used silly stuff before" reasoning for the "suits" and other issues is due to the use of so many critics saying how serious and "gritty" past Joe material was. I think there is validity to both points, but when you are making a "Hollywood Summer Blockbuster" based on action figures, I think the expectation tilts towards the more fantasy/scifi based elements of such a line instead of the more "gritty" and serious.

I have a couple friends who saw the movie last night and they enjoyed it a lot. One compared it too a much larger scale version of an episode of the 80's series while another said he really enjoyed it but it ends a bit abruptly. In concert with everything else I'm hearing between Rottentomatoes and Aintitcool I am going in expecting a fun romp in a new iteration of the G.I. Joe universe.

Remember that RISE of Cobra is exactly what is meant. This is pretty much a prequel movie and the start of the franchise. I'm not expecting anything decent in terms of acting and dialoge, one because I already read the novel and it was pretty bad and two this is a action movie. The Baroness looks spectacular and Sienna Miller seems like she's actually enjoying herself in this film. I'm just looking forward to seeing Destro being taken down and his company and assets taken over by Cobra Commander at the end of the movie.

Don't blow the ending or anything now.

Because that's not the internet fanboy way!

I never watched, nor played with, the 1980s version of GI Joe. The GI Joe figures I had were the 1970s "adventurer" Joe, and they were decidedly non-military (but still cool in their own way).

Having said that, I'll still catch this when it hits video. Looks like it might be fun--and if it isn't, then Sienna Miller in a skin tight outfit should make for some nice eye candy. :)

I collected the comic, which was very different from the cartoon show - it was chock full of military jargon and lots of detail, people were shot and killed all the time (with bullets, not laser guns), and intrigue. The Snake Eyes-Storm Shadow plot was especially memorable. But even the comic had some whacky stuff in it (shapeshifters, clones who wear snake outfits, mad scientists who dress like refugees from a Rocky Horror convention, to name a few.)

Yeah, the trailers leave a bad taste in my mouth - I get a hyper-testosterone, low-rent Michael Bay vibe from it - but shitty trailers do not guarantee a shitty movie (hell, sometimes it's the reverse - remember how cool Terminator: Salvation looked?) I don't have much faith in the director, but I might be convinced to catch a matinee.

I'm going in expecting stupid, explodey crap and I'm sure I'll have a great time. This approach worked for Wolverine and Transformers 2.

Usually, whenever I go see a film with very low expectations, I wind up liking it.
