Showtime and Netflix Part Ways

Starbreaker

Dexter and Californication are being pulled from Netflix, and no future Showtime episodes will air. Weeds, a Lions Gate production is somehow exempt.

I think you've got a typo there Starbreaker. I think what you intended to say was that it's being pulled from Netflix.

Might give some of the Dexter fans a heart-attack as currently worded.

Yeah, if anything this will probably just make people less inclined to subscribe to Showtime, not more.

Not that big of a deal considering that most of Showtimes shows are not on stream anyways, but it's still a really stupid move. They could have asked Netflix for a little more money, instead of just leaving completely because they feel their shows (which are good, but no one still watches them) are better than Netflix now.

I'll admit that I would be less inclined to purchase HBO or Showtime (not that I am a current subscriber of either--though, I have been in the past) if their tv originals were available on Netflix. I completely understand this decision.

I think it's going to be interesting to see how different networks function in this new Netflix world we live in. They will need to find some compromise between exposure and profit.

I just find it strange that some networks are jumping off the big bandwagon. You'd think they'd want to go along with it. Starz and Starzplay seem to be doing well with Netlfix, and their shows are doing better for it. Should Showtime, and hello anti HBO take note?

What the heck else is going on that there are all these rights issues and drastic comings and goings on Netflix?

Netflix has it bad right now with rights issues. Hulu has it much, much worse. They get their HuluPlus program going, only to be cut off at the knees by streaming rights issues.

I subscribe to Showtime anyway...can't risk getting spoiled on Dexter by waiting for DVDs. But once that show is done, I can give up Showtime for good, subscription or otherwise. They're not very good at putting together a compelling lineup. HBO does much better. I'll check out The Borgias, but honestly it looks like cheeze. Showtime is making an arrogant mistake. Only HBO has the quality that will let them throw their weight around like that.
I want to be the first to congratulate Showtime on the new wave of piracy they'll experience.
I'm generally anti-piracy on general principle, but Showtime is really asking for it. :p

This incident makes me think about ending my Showtime subscription. Ah, I'll stick with it for Dexter but any inclination I might have had to extend it beyond that show is now gone. I don't want to subscribe to a channel run by dicks.

Netflix could rejigger their system so that some DVDs are more "expensive" (worth 1 1/2 rentals instead of 1, for instance) than others. Showtime gets the additional revenue. That is the correct way to handle something like this. Let me decide whether I think Showtime is worth more money.

I'm not surprised that they've ceased streaming on Netflix (they'll still rent the discs as far as the article says, if I'm reading properly). It cuts into their business without enough of a financial incentive.

Still, it kind of sucks. I was hoping Showtime would go the other way and start putting new programs on Netflix. But I suppose that wouldn't fit their current (working) model.

It's what I went through with StarGate. I subscribed to Showtime for five years specifically so I could watch StarGate without waiting. Granted, that was in the early days before they put shows out on DVD.

And oh, the waiting after the first season, before season two finally came out ... I don't miss those days at all.

I was the same way. We canceled Showtime after Stargate switched channels and they canceled Jeremiah and Odyssey 5.

Lame, I had just started watching the 1st season of Dexter, on recommendations. Lost business on my part, because if they hooked me, I could have subscribed to watch the rest live. oh well...

I watched seasons 1 and 2 of Dexter on Netflix streaming. I watched season 3 on the discs. I envision a world where I don't view the rest via quite so, um, ethical, uh, means, should season 4 and 5 not be available on Netflix, be it disc or streaming.

I only watched the first handfull of season 1 episodes, and the wife and I were enjoying it. If it's being pulled from streaming (and possibly disc as well), pretty much forces me towards either quitting the show or finding it another way.

If they want to limit the availability of their product, that's fine, but if I try to pay for it and they take it away, well, that's on them IMO.

Really, Scout, we should be subscribing to Showtime to watch their original programming. I get that. But, then they shouldn't have offered it via Netflix only to yank it away. Dexter is the only Showtime show I watch. It's not really worth it to me to subscribe just for a 13 episode season.
