Shoutout to Nana Visitor

On the subject of the captaincy of DS9, it just occurred to me that it would've made sense for Starfleet to have assigned a Bajoran Starfleet officer to command the station.

IIRC, the Bajorans asked for Starfleet to run the station. Bajor owns it, but Starfleet runs it. So there would not be an option of, say, a Bajoran Militia officer running the station, because they asked for a Starfleet commander.

And as was just pointed out, Ro is the only Bajoran in Starfleet (that we know of) and with her kind of record, it'd obviously take awhile before she got back up to command rank.

As for Nana: Glad she got her own style of uniform. That one she wore at first? Shoulder pads could put somebody's eye out... :wtf:

The Bajoran uniforms had two jobs: hide Rene's physique and show off Nana's rear. Mission accomplished!

What was so wrong about his physique?
According to Larry Nemecek, Odo was initially conceived as being a younger James Dean type. At least one of the producer didn't get over this. I assume that the men's uniform, rather heavy and bulky, was designed to smooth out Auberjonois' look. Perhaps I am wrong.

The first time I saw him, I thought that Odo looked like someone well over fifty. Even though I didn't know the actor back then.

I guess I missed the point that at that time Ro was the only Bajoran in Starfleet. That seems odd to me, because I know later we see a lot of Bajorans in Starfleet. Just off the top of my head, there was the woman in Lower Decks, but I'm sure I remember others in background roles. I guess they weren't seen until after DS9 started maybe? I know we don't see any Bajorans until after DS9 starts, but I vaguely assumed there were more of them around.

That got me to thinking, do we ever see any Bajoran Starfleet officers (besides Kira later) on DS9? I think there would've been some interesting conflict there, with a Bajoran Starfleet officer torn between loyalties to Bajor and Starfleet. I'd imagine the Bajoran militia officers might not work smoothly with a Bajoran Starfleet officer.

I think Kira is the prime example of how you do Character Development in Star Trek. I've been reading the relaunch (I really need to restart Rising Son, but I've had other things on the mind lately :( ) and that character development has continued there. It's amazing how great she became.

I am sorry but Kira was never a Starfleet officer.

^ Actually, yes, she was given a commission as a Commander in Starfleet towards the end of DS9. Although I think this was intended to be temporary.

By the time (in the novels) that Bajor joins the Federation, Kira of course becomes a Starfleet Captain.

I know all about that. It was just to placate the Cardassians that would have had a hard time taking orders from an ex Bajoran terrorist. I never took that as meaning that she was henceforth a member of Starfleet.

I never read the novels.

^ For the duration of that mission? Yes, she was. A temporary commission is still a commission.

It was only a way to placate the Cardassians. That doesn't qualify as being a starfleet officer. I know all about it. Besides, it didn't fool them for one sec.

Maybe you'll argue that Sisko was a decorated Klingon warrior also.

^ No, because Sisko was in disguise as another person entirely. He himself never held a commission (honorary or otherwise) in the Klingon Defense Force.

Kira, OTOH, was actually given a Starfleet commission - she didn't just wear the uniform for show (the Cardassians could have easily checked up on that anyway), she actually was a Starfleet officer for the duration of this mission.

This is similar to T'Pol's situation in the latter seasons of ENT - she was given a Starfleet commission as well. Starfleet leadership is apparently within their rights to do this. They wanted to give T'Pol a commission in Starfleet, so they did. Same thing with Kira.

It was a ruse decided at the last minute at Garak's prompting, in fact they even misread Garak's objection and were about to call off the mission, if you remember. It wasn't the Cardassians btw, it was a group of rebels that was about to be wiped out by... the Cardassians. If the Cardassians had asked for Starfleet records they would have been told to piss off. So no, I am sorry but she never was actually commissioned. She was only authorized/instructed to say that she was. That's not exactly the same thing. If you want to quibble over minutia then you shouldn't have said the Cardassians as the Cardassians were the enemy back then and Starflleet wouldn't even give them the time of day, let alone anything else.

If you watch the very first episode of the show, Kira is positively screaming at Sisko. I was like "whoa, tone it down beotch!", the first time I watched it. She pretty quickly got a better feel for the character though, and was turning in performances like in Duet early in the series. She did a really good job of conveying Kira's inner conflict over the excuse-making in going along with the occupation versus resisting in season 6. And I like Nana Visitor much better with her hair long and blond, she is one sexy lady.

From the Star Trek Encyclopedia (2011, Michael and Wendy Okuda):
For the purposes of the this assignment, Kira accepted a Starfleet commission making it easire for her with Damar and other Cardassians.
From the Deep Space Nine Companion:
Ross and Sisko get around this hurdle by givng Kira a Starfleet commission of lieutenant colonel.
Also, it seems it was Sisko's idea, not Garak's (although Garak was likely leading Sisko toward this action).

She told Sisko that he wouldn't get his hands dirty.

I actually could understand her hostility. She'd seen so many horrible things at the hands of the Cardassians, an occupier and feared much the same from the Federation.
