Shouldn't all the Discovery characters grow neck beards?

Beard ignorance in our society NEEDS to be addressed.
Which hopefully this season of Disco will help in this regard. Hey, Star Trek is tackling relevant social issues again! Future generations will remember this the same way we remember things like the first interracial kiss or A Private Little War's commentary on Vietnam or whatever the hell was going on The Omega Glory.

I have a beard essentially the same as Riker's, and a dickweasel at my university once referred to it as a 'neckbeard.' It's decidedly not just on my neck. I was more annoyed at his misapplied insult than his attempt to get under my skin.

The term "neckbeard" is usually applied not so much about the style of facial hair itself, but more as a comment on the stereotype of a socially awkward, pretentious, condescending male nerd.

Not sure if that helps or not...!

Who knows? in any case, not sure why that guy had a problem with me.

{Spock} And? Your point? {/Spock}

I think people with Neckbeards look kinda Amish? If they put on a round hat and dark clothes then they look totally Amish.

Wikipedia seems to hit the nail on the head:

"Neckbeard" is a pejorative term and stereotype for men who exhibit characteristics such as social awkwardness, underachievement or pretentiousness.[1][2] The term is associated with the currently (2014-present) unfashionable facial hair style known as a neck beard, and by extension, to a stereotype of overweight, unkempt internet users with extreme and unpopular political views.[2][3][4] The "neckbeard" stereotype is also associated with comic books, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Otaku subculture, My Little Pony and certain games such as PC gaming.[5] The stereotype has often been associated with various communities, including incels[6] and men's rights movements.[7]

You think Amish are pretentious?

Yes. I do. "I churned butter and had a beard like this before it was cool." :hugegrin:

But seriously, I was talking about the term "neckbeard" as a pejorative term and stereotype along the lines of incels, MRAs, etc. Where a person "is" a neckbeard, not "has" a neckbeard. Is that more clear?

I was just pulling your leg.
