... Federation Higher-ups and StarFleet were.
I still think they should have Terral on the Picard show and have him reveal he's Tuvok's father , who is in canon a Starfleet officer.

Also I find it highly unlikely that Spock is still the first Vulcan in Starfleet, as the official website still insists: http://www.startrek.com/database_article/spock . Did Terral go from cadet to captain like Kelvin Timeline Kirk, or maybe we should let the official website know Spock being the first is probably apocryphal fanon?

I would go for that. I would rather see the pre Kirk enterprise in action than discovery anyway.
Why is everybody so pissy about Discovery, and why do people want to see its main female character of color be displaced by a white male one?
That's not what he said, so don't go making accusations like that without substance.

I doubt if I would bother watching a new show with Pike. Chances are I would probably end up getting bored senseless.

This thread inspired me to re-read Greg Cox's Child of Two Worlds this weekend. Very easy to see Mount's Pike in that situation.

That would be weak now, since we've already seen Pike, Spock and Number One on Discovery in the late 2250s. A series about their adventures a few years prior would also be limited in scope, and wouldn't have much of a narrative flow, since we've already seen what these specific versions of these characters become. A prequel to a prequel, lol.

The better move would have been doing an April series from the start, but Discovery effed that up. I think it best, at this point, to avoid anymore prequel shows.

I like the idea of an April series. I wouldn't have minded seeing April take over as captain of the Discovery instead of Pike, but I can imagine the interest is greater to see Pike fleshed out more. But ever since I've heard of April I've wanted to see him in live-action. I am glad Discovery has taken a few steps to canonize him. (I do get now that the Animated Series is now considered canonical, but for so long it wasn't, so I have a hard time fully embracing it). I agree that putting April on Discovery now might be a little overdoing it. That being said, if they put Kirk as a junior officer on Discovery next season I would be intrigued.

I think Star Trek: Enterprise jacked up a potential April series as opposed to Discovery. If they had made Star Trek: Enterprise about the original 1701 and had April as the captain instead of Archer that could've been sweet. When I think about it, there's very little they needed to change to make ENT work in the 23rd century. Certainly there would be changes, but the characters for the most part could've remained the same, they could've kept the Temporal Cold War, the Xindi, the Romulans manipulating the Vulcans, etc., etc.

We could still see April eventually... that ship hasn't sailed yet.

I really liked ENT being mid-22nd century, though. Admittedly, I've so been influenced by the novels that a small part of me thinks we saw the Romulan War on screen!

What I liked best about ENT was the connection between our time and the 2150s. The NX-01 was criticized for being more advanced than the Constitution class 100 years later. Me? I was thrilled to see that from the ship design from the uniforms, there were plausible visual connections between today's spacecraft and personnel (especially the ISS) and a fictionalized take 150 years after our time. Marathoning it made me appreciate it even more.

As much criticism as ENT received during its run, being set 100 years before TOS spared it from some of the debate we're seeing about Disco now.

I've grown to like ENT more than I did at the time it was on, though I liked most of the third season and pretty much all the fourth season from jump. So I'm fine with a 22nd century series, though I do wish we had gotten the Romulan War, or at least Season 5 from what I've seen of the potential episode ideas. I also liked a lot of the ships, uniforms, etc. that we got on ENT.

But from a series branding perspective, an April series called Star Trek: Enterprise would've been sweet. The 22nd century series didn't need to be called ENT even, IMO. It could've been called Federation, which was the goal-sort of-of the series, with the show leading up to the creation of the Federation.

Considering CBS' plan for year-round Trek, and assuming it doesn't immediately crash and burn, I'm sure they'll tackle the Romulan War eventually.

Even if the NX-class interiors suddenly resemble Discovery's a lot.

I actually wasted some time throwing together an April series slightly before Enterprise was announced, And continued working on it while Enterprise was on.

The crew:
Captain April
: A tough maverick commander who started his career as an enlisted man. Born on the New Tasman Colony April joined Starfleet to escape the boredom and drudgery of colonial life. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, he was given a battlefield promotion to assume command after his ship's commander was killed and later attended Starfleet's OCS program, receiving an officer's commission.

Dr. Sarah Goldman: A former child prodigy of Israeli-Ethiopian decent, Goldman holds advanced degrees in Medicine, Psychology and Physics. Feeling unchallenged in academia Goldman joined Starfleet in the hope of fully utilizing her gifts, skills and knowledge and to be on the cutting edge of new discoveries. She serves as the Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer and Science Officer.

Commander Nogura: The ship’s XO and a by-the-book officer who's uncomfortable with April’s maverick tendencies. It’s an open secret that he was assigned to the Enterprise to curb those tendencies. Nogura comes from a powerful political family who hold various positions in the governments of Earth and the Federation. They see Starfleet as a stepping stone to politics and have begun to pressure Nogura to leave the service.

I figure there would be some conflict between April and Nogura, with Nogura being right on occasion and winning some begrudging respect from April. The "political family" angle would also figure in storylines where UFP politics come into play. Nogura is also a key member of the ships first contact team because he does have a flair for diplomacy.

Lt. Commander Slev: An Andorian, who was April’s choice to be XO, Slev serves as the ship's Security Chief. Slender and soft spoken, Slev is often underestimated by opponents unfamiliar with Andorian warrior culture. Slev is also a poet, coming from the Andorian Warrior-Poet tradition.

I never followed fanon or Treklit, so my Andorians are based on "Journey to Babel" and my own imagination. My Andorians were a caste based Matriarchy. Each family/social unit is comprised of a female and groups of three males from different castes called a triad. The bond between the males is very deep and can only be broken by death. The number of triads bonded to each female varies. The Matriarchal Council that rules Andor is comprised of the most powerful females.

Slev's triad was killed and he is "bond-broken". His membership in the Warrior caste led him to Starfleet, which is one of the few places that will accept a bond broken Andorian. He thinks of April and the Chief as his triad bond brothers, even though he is no longer bonded to a matriarch.

All males become part of their father's caste. (Somehow they know which member of the triad is the father) All females are raised separate from the males to become matriarchs. I did base the idea of the triad on the comment that there are four participants in an Andorian wedding, but kept the sexes involved to two

“The Chief” CPO Moqs: A Tellerite, he's the top non-commissioned officer on the ship and runs engineering. A former drill instructor at Starfleet's boot camp he terrifies most of the junior crewman who live in fear of a temporary assignment to Engineering. He's also April's oldest friend.

Lt. Chris Pike: The ships helmsman. Devoted, loyal and a bit too serious, he would literally lay down his life for the Captain, the ship and the crew. April thinks he needs to loosen up and trust his instincts more.

Lt. (jg). Maggie Garcia: Quiet and shy, she is ironically the ship's Communications Officer. Unknown to most of the crew, Garcia is a decendent of the Eugenic supermen who plunged Earth into war centuries ago. Smarter and stronger than most humans, but raised in isolation by scientists, Garcia is socially awkward and at times uncomfortable with "normals" and fears their reaction to her background. April, whose ancestors fought and died in the Eugenics Wars, isn't pleased to have her aboard. Goldman is her "sponsor" and one of the chief designers of the program to "mainstream" Eugenic Humans. Garcia was the number one candidate for this program. ;)

Anyone known to have an augment background is pretty much kept under lock and key by the Government of Earth. (The UFP turns a blind eye to this "internal matter") Part of the reason for this is the augment process causes various mental problems (paranoia, megalomania, sociopathic tendencies.) Garcia is on an experimental drug regimen to keep this under control. Which probably contributes to her shyness and quite demeanor. All the above would be plot points for various episodes and arcs

Ensign Gwenhwyfar "Lou" Llewellyn: Garcia's roommate and polar opposite. Llewellyn serves as ship's Navigator. Loud, loquacious and uninhibited Lou is an interstellar incident waiting to happen. A Starfleet brat who mother is an Admiral, Lou has probably logged more space hours and been on more planets than all but the most experienced crewmen. Any hope by her parents that Starfleet would temper her attitudes have thus far been proven false.

The main antagonists would have been the Orions

Gimme a call CBS!!!!!

Enterprise had the only Trek uniforms that have ever looked anything like practical clothing. Twenty years ago I used to hope that eventually someone would really try to do a modern version of Star Trek that made some serious, if passing, attempt to rethink at least the look and maybe the technology of the show to reflect the half-century that has passed since the original and maybe even try out some designs that look like the real world counterparts of stuff being depicted in the show.

It's pretty clear now that such a thing is never likely to happen at all.

April series

Wow. I actually had very similar characters in mind for what I would have done with an April series. Except no Pike, and the Andorian would be a female, because hot blue chick.

Instead of Nogura, I had Stone as the first officer. Commodore Stone from Court Martial. The Black Commodore who hinted that he was once a commanding officer on a starship.

It's a shame April didn't happen, but maybe it's a good thing. Whoever reboots the franchise or gets their hands on it after Bad Robot could potentially start fresh with the maiden voyage of the 1701.

*whispers* I was sort of hoping for an Andorian among the DSC crew.
(Shran is my ultimate Star Trek alien crush. Some of us like blue guys as much as you like blue girls!)

Not sure my Pike would work after seeing the version on DISCO. Oh, well, it was mostly a name drop anyway.

Liked your idea for Stone. I did a fan fic story that featured him a few years back.

I would like an Andorian crew member on Discovery as well. It would be cool to make it Thelin. Or perhaps Discovery's future captain will be Andorian.
