A series like this might seem like a good idea but there would always be a dark cloud hanging over it...knowing what will eventually happen to Pike. :(

As with the fortune cookie and other hints from those interviewed, it seems like they have a plan for Pike that will make what eventually happens to him not a dark cloud. Sounds to me like they will show a man who continues to be emotionally torn between his duty/career and Starfleet and longing to return to Talos IV. If they truly want to do what they are implying and make his eventual fate an even happier ending he is obviously going to have to confide in someone (yes probably be Burnhan) the effect the Talos IV incident has had on him and that he truly wants to return there one day

I mean The Menagerie was supposed to be a happy ending for him … this could give that more depth (in that he was ready to leave Starfleet... which is what we don't know from the original series).

The fortune cookie to me exemplifies their theme of a happy ending already being seeded... the cage was not a prison but could be so much more for him … and the his loss (Vina) may not be forever. It spells out how his fate is not to be considered a tragedy (the real tragedy was what happened to Jeffrey Hunter himself in real life).

I'm going to say hell no to the Pike spinoff idea. So uninspired. I knew it would be a matter of hours before someone made a thread on this topic.

I'm probably the biggest fan of Pike, but a spinoff showing Pike's missions this late in the game (2258/9) doesn't sound very appealing.

If they were going to do a Pike show, I would have rather it started from his early days commanding the Enterprise, leaving a lot of room for him and his supporting cast to start off green, and grow.

By the time Pike returns to the Enterprise, it will be about 5 years from when TOS begins and Kirk takes over, that's too close. Limits the scope and story potential.

I'd rather Pike remain as Captain of Discovery for a few more years while the Enterprise is getting it's 60s refit. He elevates and balances out the show, and is a welcome regular to the cast.

It would be to many prequels. The section 31 and discovery is plenty. All other shows need to be in Picard era forward so we can create canon not be bound by it.

I'd rather he not personally.

Why not, though?

Alternatives:

Saru? No thank you. Love Saru...but I'm a human being and Star Trek is about the human condition. I'd like a human Captain.
Burnham? Nah. I love Burnham, bit I like that the series lead isn't a Captain.
Other? Meh...I'm nott sure I'm up for "Captain of the season" as a model.

I would watch it and I would change the canon that he had an accident that left him totally crippled from the neck down, even in our time some elements of paralysis are curable and this is the 23rd century, medicine would be even more advanced but then that would be a big retcon of The Cage. And fans would shite their knickers in shock and grief screaming Canon! Canon! all the way to the loo.

That wouldn't work with what Spock said about the years serving with him.

Only for 11 years. If Pike took command in 2250 from Capt. April, you have 15 years of time before Kirk takes over.

Technically Pike can command the Discovery for 4 yrs of that time... completing 5 seasons of STD, if we get that far.

And Spock just served with Pike for 11 years, not necessarily all of it on the Enterprise. He can transfer over to the Discovery and then serve there all the way up until 2265, when they both transfer back and Pike gets promoted.
