Should the uniforms include a jacket? If so, what color(s)

Re: Should the uniforms include a jacket? If so, what color

Here is a fair sampling of what we've seen so far of uniforms.

All of these may not be Starfleet, but most almost certainly are:

Guess some of the collared uniform concepts from the pre-Federation/Archer era last into the TOS period, even if we didn't really see them in the original series. The "Starship Troopers"-style grey getup with the hat seems like a throwback to the Earth Starfleet of the Archer era and even earlier with a nod to TOS-era insignia and color schemes.

The hat has its antecedent, more or less, in Pike’s from The Cage. But the cut of “Kirk’s” bell hop uniform (and some of the others) reminds me more of the clothes in The Black Hole than anything in Enterprise; the basic form, with the short jacket and form-fitting pants (and not just the men's uniforms; check out the lovely Yvette Mimieux's uniform in The Black Hole), is similar:

To me, these Star Trek uniforms so far are pretty generic sci-fi garb, along the lines of what one would see on the modern The Outer Limits, which is boring (the Black Hole’s uniforms are significantly more stylish with texture and striping). One thing I always admired about the original Star Trek uniforms is that no matter how much some people bashed them, they were distinct – simple in concept, but you knew you were watching Star Trek the moment you saw them. Compare that, say, to the uniforms in Land of the Giants or even Stargate.

If I was a moderator I would lock this topic.

Well, bear in mind that we don't know what all of those are, really.

Some may be 24th (or even 25th?) century uniforms. Some may be versions of things we've already seen (like the generic green jumpsuit all the non-starfleet types seemed to wear... and some starfleet types, too... during the first season. I'd actually be surprised if we're not seeing that in a couple of those pictures.

Re: Should the uniforms include a jacket? If so, what color

Do you think they'll be keeping the (IMO) neat idea of each ship and posting having their own unique assignment patch, like NASA and real-life navy ships? The ENT, TOS, TAS and TMP eras all had them. It wasn't until the TWoK timeframe that everyone used the one insignia.

If it's a reboot/re-imagining/re-whatever, then no problem. But if its canon, it would be difficult to slot the movie in if they don't.

Re: Should the uniforms include a jacket? If so, what color

I can almost guarantee that there will be an "Ike Jacket" in the new "old" uniform. They can't use the series outfit on TV, but the shirts used in "WNMHGB" actually work on camera. The Ike Jacket simply fills out the character on camera and makes the person look more substantial in the theater. Remember, this isn't small screen.

Jacket should be Khaki or some other earth tone, just not green, similar to the U.S. Navy officer service uniform. Avoid grey at all costs. This is not the Wehrmacht, nor are we retelling "Starship Troopers" (which is why Paul Verhoeven chose grey, German themed uniforms for his execreble retelling of Heinlein's short masterwork). Please, no hats. Vulcans don't look good in little pledge beanies.

Two points...

1) I'm unfamiliar with the term "Ike Jacket." Can you explain that one?

2) I always assumed Vulcans wore pledge beanies. But ONLY the sort with propellers on top. Would that be acceptable to you? ;)

Re: Should the uniforms include a jacket? If so, what color

Go back to any picture of WWII GI's in their dress uniforms. The jacket they wore was cut off at the waist. They called it an "Ike" jacket because that's what Eisenhower wore all the time when he was in command in Europe. The only thing I wouldn't expect to see on ST jackets are lapels.

No pledge beanies during pon farr. It's simply not done.

Doesn't look like it, but we'll see.
