Poll Should the fans be running the show?

Should the fans run the show?

Sure. I enjoyed ST'09, Into Darkness and Beyond. Plus his "Supreme Court" included hardcore fans as well as neophytes. So there was a mix of people in his creative circle. That's probably better than just having hardcore fanboys.
ST:Beyond, directed by Justin Lin was better than ST:2K9 & ST:ID IMO.

It actually felt like Trek instead of a Summer Popcorn Flick with a Trek Skin on top.

I love how everyone focuses on that and ignores his "but I came to love it" comment. The hell, people? Star Trek cannot live on the fans alone and assume everything will be fine.
Nobody said it could, but to have a guy who didn't understand Trek, take the reins is very bold and risky.

there are a lot of factors that go into play. Like, how much of a fan is the person, what is the show going to be about, do they love one show or character specifically and detest another that might color their perspective?

I think I would prefer someone that is at the very least familiar with the franchise and likes what they see over someone that hears “Star Trek” and thinks….NNNEEERRRDDD!

Of course not, for the simple reason that "the fans" do not speak with one voice. We're a famously contentious bunch who never agree on anything -- as this message board proves every day.

Seriously, which fans? Where? Ask ten fans what Trek should be doing and you'll get ten different answers. Some people want more science and exploration. Some people want more morality plays and topical allegories. Some people like serialized shows, others prefer a more episodic approach. Some people think Trek shows need to be more like TNG, or TOS, or DS9. Some people expect Trek to be "utopian," others prefer a grittier approach. Some folks like comedy episodes, others consider them a "waste."

You can't give the fans what they want because we don't all want the same thing.

Heck, look at TMP. There are folks who insist that it's the best Trek movie ever, but others who consider it a noble failure, or a turgid bore.

Which of those fans should running the show? 'Cause they're not going to agree on how to do it.

And endless discussions over meaningless trivia, getting the process stuck in the mud. ('Crewman A mentions he was on ship B around stardate C but that isn't possible because book D mentions on page E that ...! I really have to put my foot down here because that's beta canon at the very least!')

I consider everyone who votes ‘no’ in this poll to be my enemy, especially if they dislike Axanar

It's a cool documentary format fanfilm, but the sheer overwhelming scumminess of the man in charge, who basically ripped off Star Trek for his own financial gain, ruins it. Details here.

It's my understanding that the people who are presently in charge of Star Trek are fans of the show.
Then I do not consider Terry Matalas or Alex Kurtzman to be an enemy.
Well, that escalated quickly.

I have no idea about what goes on behind the scenes, it looked good on the surface. This is a shame. :(

But even without the horribleness that was behind it....
The pseudo-mockumentary style is exactly why I can't stand it. It's annoying, the acting is annoying, the dialogue is annoying. It's awful.

And it's not that I'm against fan-productions in general. Star Trek: New Voyages isn't great, but I can enjoy it to some degree and appreciate the effort they put into it.
Not so with Axanar though, that stuff is just awful.

Hell, something like Picard S3 would probably be a best case scenario with The Fans in charge.

Yikes. Then a galaxy-sized "No" to fans running things if it turned out like PIC/3.

Besides, even Gene Himself said Star Trek would be shit if fans were given authority over the franchise. And in this instance, He was right.

He was responsible for some pretty shitty things when certain productions were (largely) under his control or influence, such as TMP and TNG.

Just look at the fan films to see what fans would produce as a series. Yes some are good, but most are collections of fanwank references to episodes, secondary and tertiary (and one-shot) characters dredged up thrown in at random, "wouldn't it be cool if..." plots (that only one person thinks would be cool)...
What WOULD be good is if a production had a pool of fans as advisors and researchers to keep the writers advised of past events and plotlines relating to whatever script they're working on - which the writers could either take to heart or ignore, depending.

Sounds like Picard season 3 to me…. and that was pretty good! :D

Sounds like the Star Wars franchise since 2000.

Interesting.
