Should Paramount put a mid-budget Star Trek film into theaters?

And people keep wondering why Paramount keeps making announcements but no actual production happens.

The best time to have made a 4th film was two years after Star Trek Beyond. It’s now been eight years and five Trek streaming TV series later, and there still seems to be zero movie production at all. Because Mudd is correct. Unless they have an actor or cast that will get asses in theater seats, they can’t rely on the Star Trek name alone to generate revenue. And slapping the Star Trek name on some generic 21st century alien invasion flick and calling it a ‘Kelvin prequel’ is not the answer (not that I think this movie is actually getting made, ever.)

The state of the theatrical business is very segmented and handcuffed by gigantism. On nearly every good release weekend of the year there are a couple of big budget movies duking it out. Then there are somewhat less expensive films targeted at specific genre audiences - horror films, rom-coms, etc.
It's often easier to predict the winner in the grosses that week, since from the mid '90s and beyond, the two majors are almost always generic action versus generic comedy. In the 80s it was possible to see three decent different films on opening weekends, but never four. The maximum's arguably two now.

You and I and others will remember a crusty time back in the days of RAIDERS vs. SUPERMAN 2, both of which did well as major movies had much longer legs, and the runner-up wasn't expelled so quickly.

Then you also had sci-fi weekend battles with the likes of THING '82 versus BLADE RUNNER (2019) which were blasted to hell by E.T. Meanwhile, there were always popular dramas....

But after STATE OF PLAY did little US business, most major dramas were saved for late fall to Christmas. High-budget drama's now the redheaded stepchild theatrically.

Sequels are a disgustingly sure bet like never before. TREK is still often an exception to that rule.:borg:

Yes, and I would LOVE to see a movie that had - at its center - the who/what/where/when/how/why of how a starship is actually built! I mean from inception to completion...they could have plenty of drama and action and character development in THAT plot idea!!!
All while those Terra Prime idiots are trying to stop it, so there’s your antagonists…
