we all know that this show is much edgier than past trek shows. its not afraid to push a few more buttons and take more risks than any trek before it, as we have seen this far.

sex happens in star trek a lot. hell, in TNG we even saw beverly crusher orgasm in that one episode with the ghost (who turned out to be just an alien)! and of course in ENT we saw t'pol's buttcrack, so there was a bit of nudity there.

if it was done tastefully, and not gratuitously, would you mind if oral sex was depicted between two individuals in this show?

I'm always down with depictions of oral sex.

All jokes aside, I'm ok with anything as long as it's germane to the story.

Sex can be depicted in many ways, horrific, funny, erotic etc..etc..

Frankly I think the way Americans look at sex on TV is stupidly prudish.

I don't see how they can make it relevant or supportive of the stories that they want to tell. Depicting it in a graphic fashion, no way. That crosses a line for me- not because I'm offended, but because I don't think it's appropriate in Star Trek. If it was done with class, and suggestive in nature, it could work.

Overall, I don't feel it is or would be necessary.

I think we may be operating with slightly different definitions of "depict" :p

you mean like with every single other depiction of sexual activity in Star Trek?

Yes, but I feel that there are varying degrees of suggestiveness. Seeing two people in bed together when one of them slips down off screen and "you know what that is. ;-)" is one level ... seeing head bobbing goes a step or two further and makes it less appropriate, as it is more graphic. The producers would need to be painfully aware of how far they can go before they either lose the audience as they roll their eyes, or cross into R rating territory, and certainly not become Space-Porn.

As you said to XCV330, different definitions of "depict".

Still, the show is TV-MA, so Game of Thrones level naughty business shouldn't be surprising.

Depicted (implied)? Ok I guess, if it fits the story, but I wouldn't care for it. Explicitly shown? No. Please no.

First off, the show isn't TV-MA. The ratings are on an "episode-by-episode" basis. Most have been TV-14. Only the ones with graphic violence have garnered a TV-MA. I think the difference is that if they felt they needed sex or graphic violence in an episode to tell a story more effectively, they are not afraid to make that episode TV-MA-- rather than simply saying "well, we're TV-MA so let's throw in lots of nudity, sex, and violence!"

Sex can be an interesting storytelling tool, but it's rare I've found an instance where showing it graphically in any manner was integral to the story. In some dramas, the way a character behaves during the act can inform their character, but more often than not it's used the way T'Pol often was on Enterprise-- as a selling tool, rather than a storytelling tool.

I'm certainly no prude, but I see no reason to show a sexual act any more than I would showing people eating. Now, a meal can be an interesting backdrop to a conversation that progresses the plot, and if a sexual act can serve the same purpose, that works, too. Eating habits and behavior during dinner can leave subtle subtext, and likewise so can a sex scene. But rarely is that the case.

Oh it is? I hadn't noticed the rating- or bothered to look. I assumed PG-13 level- whatever the tv version of that is. Well.. I guess they can show pretty much whatever they want. Not sure it's appropriate in Start Trek, but I guess they could.

I sit corrected, according to @Albinator - it's per-episode.

the real question is, does anyone think we'll actually see full on oral action in Star Trek?

personally, I'm not holding my breath

Well, there are abundant resource of oral sex show to watch in the net. So there is no urgency for Discovery to add that kind of show to the story. But hey, I'm not opposing people who have fetish with oral sex. It just that we don't need to make every show to have explicit sex scene inside, including the oral sex... scene.

Just no. I'd have more faith in The Orville being able to pull it off.

It should've been done while the security officer was still alive. Michael walks in on Lorca sitting behind his desk and then she notices the security officer (forgot her name)

It would've added a lot to the story.
