This is how I actually feel about this topic:

Janeway could handle a kid on one hip and a phaser rifle on the other...

...while gritting out, "GIVE. ME. BACK. MY. SHIP."

For Janeway I think parenthood would be character-neutral. She could handle it either way. I do agree that it would depend on the writers and how much they wanted to focus on it. Kirsten Beyer spent a lot of time on Miral Paris, with far-reaching consequences. It was kind of interesting, especially the
custody battle with Tom's mother
.
Now, get that kid some plain tomato soup, hot.

If I remember well, Janeway made a reference to her will to have children on only 2 occasions : - with Tom in S2 - Threshold and with Q in S3 -The Q and the Grey.

Sure Janeway had no children but I think that she considered Kes then Seven of Nine as her daughters (look at her a softer attitude when she was close to them).

Hypothetical situation. Janeway's birth control fails (highly improbable, but not impossible) at some point shortly before she takes command of Voyager. So she has a little present from Mark (a stowaway). :) But she doesn't find out about it until after they are in the DQ. Do you see her making a choice to keep it or deciding to end a pregnancy because she thinks the situation they are in is no place to raise a child?

Janeway as a character seemed maternal. She could also seem like a total bitch at times.

Yay, abortion discussion.

She'd keep it because... well, because it was on American TV. It would have been fascinating to see her captain the ship and raise a child but as I said earlier in this thread, Starfleet people just seem to have kids without much parenting involved.

I'm guessing holograms do the dirty work.

When Voyager was lost in the Delta Quadrant and we met Captain Janeway, do you think the character should have been a mother?

She was around 40 years old at the time. Engaged to Mark. Does this make sense? I understand life spans are longer in the 24th century, but are child bearing years extended? Is it possible to fight a natural desire to reproduce? If we found out 20 years on that she had a child that was raised by the father, would our perceptions change? (Kirk/David)

Can a woman have it all? A career and a family in the 24th century?
If Voyager were going to be a successful generational ship she would have to procreate to add to the crew. 70 years is along time, even if humans live to 130 plus in the Star Trek universe. If you extend human life then there must be a way to extend a female's natural fertility to say mid 50's to 60's since she would have the eggs of a 38 year old instead of our present day 50 year old. In my head canon human puberty would kick in later for the lifespan and extended fertility to work.

Kirk didn't seem to give a darn. He went straight for command.
Well that we value fatherhood more today compared to when that film was made. A man who deliberately chooses not to be part of his child life is a deadbeat dad. Carol Marcus was a bitch to make that decision and he an idiot to go along with it. Kirk had no right to play the grieving father role IMO.

Should Archer have been a father, would that make him saving the earth in Season 3 more poignant?

Should Picard have been a father, would that make him embarrassing his kid by getting assimilated more poignant?

Daaaad the kids at school are throwing batteries at me and yelling "who's your Daddy"

Daaaad the kids at school are shoving me into my locker and yelling "MATURATION!"

LOL the above set up!
Picard was a father in the Nexus so it must be a secret fantasy of his.

I imagine being in Starfleet AND a parent would be very difficult because you wouldn't see your children as much (exceptions being Sisko and the O'Briens). I liken it to being in the military, always off on missions and the high possibility of death.
And yet our real military officers insist on procreating dammit!

You know, I'm going to blow your mind here and say even now, some woman actually choose NOT to have a child. I know right? Who can believe it but I assure you it is true. ;)

Sorry for the Delayed Reaction, TheGoodStuff, but I have been sitting here, in the Dark of My Manhood, trying to Grok such a concept!

I can't conceive it!

It is inconceivable!!!

:guffaw: :techman: To you!

Something would have happened and there would have been an unfortunate miscarriage.

I'm still surprised that after seven years there were only two children born on Voyager...but we don't know what went on in the original timeline. I hate to think there were other children (along with Naomi's daughter) who were wiped from existence.

Still wonder what happened to her lizard babies. I have a dream of Byers doing something with them... :D

Voyager should have been crawling with kids and families. One of the great mistakes of the show in my opinion. We didn't need to see them or have a ton of episodes about them. Just know they're there. Mention them etc.

Anyway....

I believe someone mentioned earlier in this thread about wondering what happened to lizard babies. I think one of the Strange New Worlds anthologies did something with that.

Exactly! As soon as Archer's ship went back in time they got busy making new crew. Janeway and Chakotay should have shagged for the good of the ship!

My Spirit Guide says,

Maybe, No.

"Before calling on your spirit guides and angels, set up your environment, including a comfortable seating arrangement. Have a glass of water within reach. Dim your lights, lower window blinds and/or close curtains. You may also choose to light incense and/or candles. Include in your space any crystals, sacred objects, or pictures that are meaningful to you. Turn off the ringer on your telephone and make sure that you will not be disturbed for the length of time you plan to practice. Wear comfortable clothes, little or no jewelry, and take off your shoes."

Nothing about Shagging or Copulating or even brewing some nice coffee...

Well, he had some developing to do before his true character emerged, but that role might have easily been taken up by Neelix. He was in the bag for her after all.

Dog owners who consider themselves "mothers" because they are dog owners are assholes.

(Hmmm? What about the reverse?)

Parents who consider themselves "pet owners" because they are parents, spend %90 less money on babyfood.

Well, since most of the ones you're referring to are aholes themselves, what's the diff?
