should I buy DS9 set for $237.50?

Right now deepdiscount.com is having their annual 20% off sale. That makes the seven season DVD set $237.50, or only $1.35 an episode. Pretty cheap, I'd say. Should I buy this?

Picking this up would also mean I'd become a Niner and hang out here. What would that entail?

^^ You'll have to take the pledge and swear allegiance to The Sisko, preach the virtues of Deep Space Nine from the highest pulpit, and pimp out the show to all your friends and family....

Go on, sell your soul.....

Well, chances are you won't get a better price on it ever, unless you buy an illegal bootleg which is falsely advertised as a legit copy. Deepdiscount is a legit company where you know that won't happen. Or, unless you wait for the next price drop on it from Paramount, but who knows when or if that will ever come.

So, if you are ever planning on buying DS9 on DVD, then now is the best opportunity you are gonna get. Might as well hop through that window of opportunity while it's open. Go ahead and buy it.

As for what becoming a Niner and hanging out on DS9 boards entails: you get to have much deeper discussions about a Trek show that simply don't exist on other Trek show boards, because the other Trek shows don't have deep, developed characters or deep, developed stories spanning multiple episodes and the whole series, like DS9 does.

^ Deep, huh? I can be deep. It will be a struggle, though.

I know what you mean about price, CorporalClegg. The TOS discs I spent over $300 are now $110 on sale, and I'm looking to spend another $100+ for the TOS HD-DVD Season 1 set to go with my new HD-DVD player.

I'm still worried about this deep stuff, though.

Well, that is certainly a great price. Don't think you're gonna get much better than that - I'd go for it.

As for hanging out here...all are welcome. :)

Have you ever seen the show before at all? Because if you haven't, you could even set up your own thread to discuss the episodes as you watch them. That way you wouldn't be spoiled by other stuff in the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, PKTrekGirl.

I certainly have seen DS9, both during its initial run and on Spike.

But at least half the episodes would be brand new to me. I only know a few well. It is the one Trek series I really haven't experienced fully.

Go for it. You're getting a much better deal than I did, and I haven't regretted the purchases for a second.

I as well ordered my DS9 set through DeepDiscount when they were having a sale. Except this was in February of 2006. Still got it for $314 w/ coupon though.

Have not regretted it one single bit.

Quite simply, yes. I was in the habit of taping the episodes when they first aired, and over the years, after some hefty re-viewing, they began to rot away, as tapes do. I've recently been picking up the DVD's and re-watching them with my wife, and they really stand the test of time. The series still packs a certain thematic relevance beyond moral-of-the-week pandering, and the cast is a supremely talented bunch -- easily the best overall ensemble bar maybe the TOS crew on a good day.

I faced the same decision last year. I watched all of DS9 in its first run, but I didn't really warm to it. Stuck to it out of loyalty, mostly. I didn't really engage with the characters too much, especially Sisko and Quark. The religious and political aspects of the show kind of turned me off, and I found the LOOOO-OOOOO-NNG Dominion War arc to be an absolute snoozer.

So, years later, I am re-reading the Jammer recaps of DS9. And the show he's describing sounds pretty damn good. Much better than I remember. I really like nuBSG and Moore is a big part of both of these shows. So when the series set goes on sale for an incredibly good price, I think "What the hell, why not?".

Now, after rewatching the whole thing on DVD, DS9 has become my second favourite series (after TOS).

So Outpost4, I say do it!
