Should I Blind Buy Babylon 5?

I haven't seen Crusade so I can't say anything about it.

Entertaining enough, but nothing special. It's claim to fame is that no episode order exists which is 100% correct. Some orders have unexplained uniform changes, some orders have on-screen dates out of order, some orders butcher character development. I have my preferred order, of course (who cares about on-screen dates).

And of course, no matter what order you watch it in, Capt Gideon and Captain Lochley meet for the first time on two seperate occasions (Thanks, TNT, for S5 of B5, but, boy did you do a hatchet job on Crusade with your sabotage)

"Ruling from the Tomb" is the only one that's their unambiguous first meeting.

not quite right. first time they meet is on Mars. Second time is when they rescue Lochley's X-Wing. Third is on B5. the 2nd and 3rd time they meet, it is definitely known they have met before.

I somehow made it all the way into the second season before I gave up on this show, but it's clearly very popular. These days, I'm hesitant to blind buy much of anything myself or to recommend that others do so... but that is pretty cheap, if you've got the cash. I think the series is streaming on Netflix. If you've got that, probably better to try that out. It seems like these DVDs are on sale all the time, so if you end up loving the show and want it on disc, you probably won't have to wait too long to get another good deal on it.

This has been a modern sci-fi series I've had my eye on.
They are in my Amazon cart but the price at WBshop.com is exactly why I wait.
Even if I have to pay shipping, will I, it'll still be a great price.
I need to check at home what I've got.
I got Crusade last year, crazy cheap, for I think $9. I may have the movies.

Thanks for posting this! I also did Farscape like you did(the OP), as well as nuBSG and I have SG-1 waiting in the wings to be viewed.

Edit: I now see that free Shipping is applied to orders over $50USD, nice.

I think the series is streaming on Netflix.

It was for some time, but last fall it was pulled from streaming, along with several other WB shows.

As for Crusade, $7.50 is an amazing price, assuming the OP isn't trying to do "math" again. It was a spin-off series that only got a half-season. It was doomed from the start, with network interference causing major problems.

Still, if one is a fan of Babylon 5, Crusade is an opportunity to spend more time in that universe, with familiar settings and characters. *cough*Jane*cough*

Yeah, I would recommend against blind-buying Crusade unless you've really enjoyed Babylon 5. It was cancelled before it ever even aired, and as a result it doesn't have a first season and the closest thing it has to a resolution is a throw-away line in one of the tie-in novels.

Yes, at that price. It's a fun series, the movies are generally OK, 'In the Beginning' being the best of them. Crusade, I didn't care for. The cast didn't appeal to me, which makes it hard to appreciate stories that frequently were not all that compelling to start.

I seem to remember that they didn't appear to know each other when rescuing her ship, it seemed like a first meeting. Maybe it's a wrong impression, from having seen that episode first, I'll have to rewatch it and check.

Yes. Yes! A thousand times, YES! :D

I blind bought it years ago now and enjoyed the ride so much. I had a hard time with the first season, but if you keep chugging along it ends so strongly. There is a lot of laying the goundwork for future storylines that isn't necessarily appreciated on the first viewing, but there is plenty to enjoy along the way.

Season 2 is a huge step up, and properly gets things rolling, before seasons 3 and 4 up the stakes even more. What an adventure. :D Season 5 perhaps takes half a season to get going, but by the time it does, it's back to its previous best. The movies then range from amazing to shocking; there are only a couple you may actally need to watch for arc purposes.

The budget wasn't the best, so superficially the show has aged a lot. Underneath all of that though is great characterisation, political intrigue, vast story arcs that are planned well and are interesting, and then there are plenty of heartstopping moments too.

Crusade is only a recommendation if you become a hardcore fan of the show. It's very hit and miss, but it's a shame it was canned when it was, ultimately.

Oh, and as for rewatching, many of the episodes you may have thought were too slow because they were building the Universe, you can find a greater appreciation for them, once you can see what they are actually contributing to the arc.

Many folks folks notice new things still on their 5th or 6th or more rewatch.

I know there are episodes I didn't enjoy so much on the first watch through, that I found much more enjoyable the second time through, because I already knew what they were building towards, and it was great seeing how cleverly it was all built up.

The Creator/Showrunner was a great believer and adherent to "Checkov's Gun"

Ignore the cretins telling you no. ;)

When the avalanche has begun, it is too late for the pebbles to vote.

Agreed. Buy it. Babylon 5 is the second best sci-fi universe out there (Star Trek is the first). Like every show, it has it's excellent, merely good, bad, and stupidly bad episodes, but the bottom line is you will have fun, and won't be sorry.

Second best? Better fun and more interesting villains than Farscape?
That's my current second best Universe?
I'm hoping for something good cause I hear lots of good about it when the show comes up.

Sorry, Twilight Zone was the best TV series ever.

But yeah, $12 is a great price for a TV season, especially something like B5. Consider that TV seasons can usually go for $40-50 at most stores.

Oh I don't now the current regeneration (sorry couldn't resist) of DW is pretty good. Plus it is the worlds longest running Sci-Fi show so it must have done something right.
