Should Americans be required to buy health insurance?

Most people can see that this is not about health insurance.

Really? I thought it was about making sure that all Americans have access to a base standard of coverage which will encourage people to get more preventative care which has the effect of increasing the general health of the population and reducing costs for everyone, bringing the standard of health in the US up to the same level as the rest of the civilized world. But you've decided otherwise for us and apparently speak for most of the country, so it must be true!

If it actually had to do with health care it would cover every person who doesn't have insurance. It doesn't even come close. It would also not have been rammed through with votes in the dead of night without the promised transparancy. What happened to that promise, by the way?

Could it be that it was done so quickly so that senators didn't go home during the break and get an earful?

Also, am I mistaken or are these senators exempt from this health care plan?

Until there is a Supreme Court case that says otherwise it is Constitutional. Period.

Exactly! People here are thinking backassed. it's not illegal before there is a law, all laws are legal until the SC says otherwise.

Once again you need car insurance, the same should be said with your health.

Better yet if you want to enter a hospital you need insurance, don't need to make it mandatory, but let the fools die.

Canadian Health Care

Worth a read, especially the country comparison chart at the end, comparing life expectency (80 in Canada, 78 in U.S.) and cost per capita, in USD (3, 895 in Canada, 7, 290 in U.S.)

Our cost are lower, and our services are better.

I really hope the U.S. figures it out for the greater good.

I'd love to know who only pays $290 a month for health insurance. I pay $0, thank you Massachusetts, leading the way in this country yet again.

Before moving to the insurance I had, my parents were paying over 500 dollars for insurance for me (I was to take over in the new year, they were helping me get my legs financially before taking on that thing)...

And that sort of figure shows how nuts things are in the U.S when it comes to health insurance. In Australian you can get top shelf coverage of for a family of 4 for that much.

Uh, you wouldn't have wanted a program like that either, so what are you complaining about?

Could it be that it was done so quickly so that senators didn't go home during the break and get an earful?

What about any of this has been done quickly? It's been a long arduous process.

There are some who would have no problem with letting the uninsured die. Can't afford it? No job, no assets? Life-threatening condition? Oh, boohoo. No money, no treatment.

That because they made "poor" decisions about their health, Robert.
Don't you know that?

Oh, that's right. I forgot about the time I had to pick out which genes I wanted. I should have picked the ones that didn't predispose me to stuff, huh? Silly me.

Your right. The bill is essentially gimped because of people like you. Congrats! This is pretty much what I was afraid was going to happen from the beginning... to appease people who are so far ideologically gone that they'd rather believe lies about healthcare then recognize the facts, a single payer system had to be taken off the table.

So yeah, it originally had everything to do with healthcare. But people like you sullied the whole thing and now we have this instead. And now your complaining about the results that your ideological kin have created?

Single-payer was never even on the table in this debate because everyone knew it was a non-starter. Maybe we should have started with that and compromised to get the public option. Instead, we won't even get that.

I'm hopeful the end result of this will help people, but I know it's not going to help as much as it could have.

Those that earn their insurance like my dad's wife. I pay about $160 but now have $1000 deductible. I enjoy the benefits of the FLEX card (pre-tax money deducted for medical payments only) but the Senate plan will reduce the number of items I'll be able to pay with it. Nice.

I pay $0, thank you Massachusetts, leading the way in this country yet again.
You're welcome. Could you switch to the right one please as the left one is getting chaffed.

You are correct that Mass is leading the country in health care. Our state has talked about how to contain the soaring costs by restricting access to hospitals and specialists. Rationing, pure and simple, just as the Federal government has started with women's tests.

I look forward to the supreme court case that will rule this requirement unconstitutional. It's certainly unAmerican. Wouldn't it be great to have a product or service that the government requires you to purchase simply because you live in this country. Isn't that what the pilgrims left Europe for?

Health care is not a Right.

I hope that's the case too, but after living outside of the US for a few years and seeing how things are done here and how easy it is, I think I've just become too cynical about the whole thing. I stopped paying close attention to the health care bill a few months ago because it was just too frustrating to watch.

It's certainly unAmerican.

This is a lie. You shouldn't lie, it's not very nice.

Wouldn't it be great to have a product or service that the government requires you to purchase simply because you live in this country.
Wouldn't it be great if no one had to worry about getting their basic health needs covered and costs were lower for everyone? You know, like a civilized society?

How is it a lie?

Yes but we don't live in fantasy land. The current Senate plan does neither.

I only have one comment on make on this.

Health care is not a Right.

The rest of the civilized world disagrees with you, and so do I.
You cannot designate as a Right a service someone else has to supply to you.

I'm enjoying the dichotomy of your avatar coupled with your complete lack of caring for the plight of those less fortunate than you. It amazes me every day that you can justify your political beliefs versus the teachings of Jesus.

Well obviously, because health care is not antithetical to any American ideals. Just because you find it politically uncomfortable doesn't magically make something "unamerican"... which is ultimately a term designed to shut down debate instead of actually addressing any issues. This seems to be your general mode of operation on these topics, at least when you're not suggesting that people should be taking harmful silver instead of getting actual medical treatment.

The current Senate plan does neither because of people like you. Shouldn't you be congratulating yourself? This is what you were fighting for all along!
