Should Americans be required to buy health insurance?

he should also consider that his attitude is pretty much fuck-you-I've-got-mine.

I've paid for my own health insurance by working for it and planning for it for years. If that's what you mean by your post, thank you.

That's... very nice.

I too have paid for my health insurance every since I started to work.
The difference between the American and the Germany systems is that it's almost impossible that I'll lose my insurance coverage, even if I were to lose my job and therefore the ability to pay the insurance fees myself.

Ditto for me.

Paid my insurnace monthly which at the time I left Australia was about $82 a month with a 15% rebate from the federal government (introduced by the conservatives btw).

That money per month covered emergency hospital, dental (had $1400 of work done before leaving and it cover $700), optical (about 25% on a new glasses which help when paying $500 a pair for frame and custom lens grinds) and physio/chiro.

I didn't have to get any pre-application checks just a waiting period before being able to claim (6 monts for new conditions, 12months for pre-existing) and no losing coverage unless I didn't pay each month.

Could of added a drug plan but wasn't really worth it. My meds were $32 a month for BP meds (Atacand) and $35 for a rhinositis spray (Nasonex). Oh and Australia pharmacists don't charge filling fees.

I forgot where I found it. One of those chain email sorta things I guess.
