Shot out of an airlock

the ramrod-straight military-types created by other authors that try to show their humanity without humor.

Which authors would those be?
Oh, you know... Christopher with T'Ryssa Chen, KRAD with Nan Bacco and Sonek Pran, Dave Mack with Cervantes Quinn and Tim Pennington -- humorless cookie-cutter soldier types, all of them.

Taking me out of context, huh? That's a sure ticket to being taken seriously. (not) At least those non-PAD characters(besides Chen) have a developed sense of humor because they're not Starfleet.

As opposed to the rhetorical device "(not)," which is just a super way of presenting yourself as serious.

That, and displaying complete ignorance of what the phrase "out of context" actually means.

I don't have a problem with Chen, Atlee Fife (from Childern of the Storm) would have made my list but that was only one book. Torvig on Titan is a bit annoying.

But after all the death we've had ftom Destiny I would settle for just a transfer.

Oh, and thanks to CLB on the tease for the next Typhon Pact installment.

What's her face, the Vulcan counsellor on the E-E from Before Dishonour. I have not read any of the post-Nemesis novels set before Before Dishonour, so perhaps it was just the way Peter David wrote her but my God, she was such an insufferable little know-at-all. You'd think Starfleet psych-screening would make sure people like this were banned from serving in the Fleet. I mean c'mon, her logic was flawed beyond such a believe, that even she must have realized something was wrong when her train of thought derailed somewhere along the line.

Didn't she eat a plasma beam when the Borg bombarded Vulcan during Destiny? I think she was wandering the Forge trying to get her head together.

I stated originally how I Chen needs to be shot out the airlock.....later on, it was referenced how KRAD with Nan Bacco and Sonek Pran, Dave Mack with Cervantes Quinn and Tim Pennington.

I guess my beef with Chen is that she is actually part of Star Fleet and there is a certain discipline to be had (Yeah, the folks in New Frontier are a little zany at times, but New Frontier is another beast altogether).

I got no problem Chen embracing her human (or I would say her annoying side), but its gotta be in check when on the ship, especially on a coveted ship like Enterprise (you'd assume most would love a chance to have at least a tour of duy on the Enterprise).

Also, saying how in the latter book she works down in Engineering, I felt it is more a plot device than anything to give her something to do in the story. I can't see how a contact specialist skill sets transfer over to Engineering other than the rudimentary knowledge. You'd think a contact specialist would be a better suited in the social sciences, but then there wasn't a need for it in the story line. (and yeah, I still have a beef with Harry Kim now in Security instead of a more Science Role on the ship -- or perhaps I need to the read the story as to how Kim wanted to be in security) -- Yes, yes, I know those defend how Chekov went to Security from being the Navigator (I need to read that story as to why Chekov switched -- or was it because that the only job opening available to get a story line, but i digress)

Pennington, Quinn, Bacco, Pran get a little more lattitude as they aren't Starfleet serving on a ship with strict discipline.

Chen...report to Airlock #1 Immediately!!!!

And her discipline improved considerably between the beginning and end of Greater Than the Sum. Before that, she had very little career progress because of her lack of discipline, but serving under Picard has helped her shape up a great deal. Her story arc is that of someone working to get her life together and better herself.

I would've said Charivretha zh'Thane, but the Borg already got to her. I can't really think of any characters in the DS9R that annoy me that much, but she was probably the one that came the closest.

After that I would have to say Iliana Ghemor. Don't get me wrong, I liked how her character progressed toward madness over the course of the two books that featured her, and I didn't hate her. But by the end of "The Soul Key" I didn't feel sorry for her after the extremes that she went to just because she was wallowing in self-pity.

Me? Leybenzon. Even before Before Dishonor, I thought of him as a second-rate copy of Worf. After its events--he wanted to torture Crusher to make Picard do his will?!? WTF?--I was fine to be rid of him.

Prynn Tenmei - Mommy & Daddy issues out the ying-yang. Can I propose a rule that new character either have to come from stable, happy, boring families or be orphans? :rommie:

I would not do any "plank walking", but I am not a big fan of characters reminding me of bad movies about tougher than anything heros talking all cool and rough (I am not talking about over the edge characters from NF now:-)).

I know many people here would say that I am totally wrong but Nan Bacco had that effect on me in Destiny and post-Destiny novels. Well I haven't read Articles of the Federation, which may somehow explain her demeanor, but in my opinion she only feeds the prejudice that the only way for women to be succesful politicians is to behave like (a certain kind of) men.

Another example is Christine Vale in ST:Typhon Pact:Seize the fire, which I have recently finished. I know she is supposed to be bad-ass and ambitious like younger Riker or something, but in this novel she was close to insufferable to me. She just resembles a bad western movie character. But maybe it's just this book.

On Chen - I haven't read many novels featuring her character, but she's quite allright. Little goofy and awkward, but not in an insuferable way for me.

Huh? Aside from the fact that Bacco is somewhat inspired by Jed Bartlet from The West Wing, I've never seen anything about her behavior that seems mannish or tough or macho or whatever you're saying. She's just sarcastic and blunt. It's not as if men have ever had a monopoly on having an acid tongue.
