Shot out of an airlock

I'm going to have to register my support for spacing every last original creation in the New Frontier series, followed by using the light-speed breakaway factor to reset every otherwise established individual with absolutely no memory of NF.

But that's my opinion.

I don't want to see ANY characters spaced-- we've had enough cast changes, imho. I'm glad to see the TNGr cast settling down and hope it stays that way for a while. I'd also like to see DS9 pull its cast back together, along the lines of what the Voyager books have done.

And for the record, count me in the pro-T'Ryssa Chen column. I think she's a great character.

can we vote to restore robin lefler and selar to their former glory....as hard as that might be for the latter? even if robin is heading up the new thalon protectorate, she needs to get back into starfleet to resurrect the interest in her character. as of now she's been turned into a shadow of her former self.

for the vote to 'off' a character, what about rana desai, never been a big fan of hers...and it would give david mack a chance to increase the bloodshed

Trys is easily one of my top five-ish favorite Trek characters.

Not Treklit. All of Trek.

She and Elias Vaughn are the only two Treklit-only characters I love that much.

Not a fan of Chen. I wish she would get re-assigned to the Excalibur or something.

I could live with Ganz getting spaced at some point in a future story. Not that I don't like the character, but it's nice to see a bad guy ended sometimes. Plus, that business in Declassified.

I'm going to have to agree on Ganz being spaced. There are times I'm tempted to just skip right past his parts.

But I love Chen.

Oh, come on. PAD creates characters that actually have interesting personalities, versus the ramrod-straight military-types created by other authors that try to show their humanity without humor. One can't take so much seriousness for so long.

Mackenzie Calhoun... I just don't see the appeal with a character that embodies all the positive traits from the live action captains. Its like throwing originality out of the window and finding what has worked in the past and just throwing it all together to create a boring invincible hero.

I'm not exactly a mega fan of Peter David's work, but I know he is capable of creating decent original characters.

what?

^ I'm going to assume a word or two is missing from his post.

I'm another one who absolutely loves Chen. Her scene in Titan's holotank in Lost Souls was pure gold.

I can't really think of anyone I'd like to see spaced who didn't get the ax already. I try to ignore the characterizations in Before Dishonor as much as possible because they were so awful, but the BD T'Lana would be at the top of the list. (Fortunately, other authors treated her better. Sort of.)

I once enjoyed Peter David's wriring... I recalled enjoying Vendetta quite a bit. However, I find his writing to be far too tongue-in-cheek for my tastes, and, as I have noted elsewhere, I can't stomach his recent work.

I read the first three or four installments of the New Frontier series, and found them to feel completely disconnected with the Star Trek that I saw on-screen. I have no desire to read anything further of his, be it Trek or other (I've tried a B5 novel or two of his, both of which I recall putting down without finishing and not caring a whit about.)

PD unquestionably has skill as a writer, but his work isn't for me.

I like Chen. I think it take time to get a new character settled in and I think that she has generally progressed well. The only time I recall being really bothered was by one line of her's in "Greater Than The Sum". That line was, "Your Mamma was a fembot." I think she said it before she drop-kicked a borg on the E-E bridge.

As for characters that I would like see terminated:

Shar from DS9 relaunch...he is like Eeyore from Andoria.

K'chak'!'op from Titan...her character is meant to be matronizing...maybe for comic releif or something, but it is lost on me. She is a minor character, but a major nuisance in my opinion.

Fo'Hachensa from Titan - TV budgets limit how extreme aliens are depicted, literature should have similar restrictions on characters who talk like a Yoda knock-off. His lines always take me out of the story (I think recent books may have had him re-assigned off of Titan).

Dr. Ree from Titan has been declining for me overall in recent books. I think that may be because the whole Troi pregnancy thing dragged on so long. "Over a Torrent Sea" would probably be my favorite Titan book if not for the Dr. Ree/Troi sub-plot.

the ramrod-straight military-types created by other authors that try to show their humanity without humor.

Which authors would those be?
Oh, you know... Christopher with T'Ryssa Chen, KRAD with Nan Bacco and Sonek Pran, Dave Mack with Cervantes Quinn and Tim Pennington -- humorless cookie-cutter soldier types, all of them.

All of those seem so different than any Federation characters we ever saw on the shows...I think that's why some might be turned off on them.
