When I first heard that ILM was doing the effects I was like; oh cool, that's great.

I knew it was Lucas' company, obviously, but to see this very recent photo of the two of them chatting over dinner in a lovely restaurant somewhere in Hollywood, the reality hit; Star Trek is being run by George Lucas! (and JJ Abrams)

You may laugh; but it is true. The reality is that a movie or show like Trek is mostly if not 100% visual; which is fine by Mr. Lucas; that's mostly what he likes to do anyway.

Sure there are hundreds of employees at ILM and Abrams has people and etc; but when it comes down to it; it's about these two guys getting together and ultimately they call the shots.

Er, not really. ILM has been hired to do the visual effects. They're working for a client, Paramount Pictures. It's no different from hiring a lawyer in that regard.

And for the record, ILM did the visual effects for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: The Next Generation: "Encounter At Farpoint, Parts I & II," Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: The Next Generation: "All Good Things..., Parts I & II," Star Trek Generations, and Star Trek: First Contact, in addition to having built the model of the Enterprise-D used throughout the first three seasons of TNG.

Does that mean that George Lucas was running Star Trek from 1982 to 1996?

Yes.

When it comes to a fantasy or sci-fi film, I think the F/X are half the movie. And F/X people are not simply accountants or programmers or a legal team; they're artists. They draw, paint, write, create, storyboard and craft a visual narrative.
Lucas had his hand in some of the best in Trek film and TV; coincidence?

Or the force?

The Dark Side of the Force.

Lucas isn't running anything ST.

ILM is a company like any other that you could hire to do special effects. They'll do what they are instructed to do based on storyboards and concept art using their fantastic tools and they'll do a great job.

No one is going to sabotage ST at the risk of losing future jobs.

Prepare to start worshipping Lucas. Doomed, we are. But seriously, I think I'm wrong, nobody could and should do Star Trek exactly the way it was done on Tos. Once was enough. Time for something new and infusing the best of Star Wars into it can only help it but I still don't see any reason to change or update it. Look at new Voyages. They've recreated the same electric feeling TOS did. There's no reason to lose that. Now if NV's would only come up with some good stories. J.J. should keep the universe and it's myriad of details intact just for the sake of consistancy and continuity.

That's what they want you to believe.

George Lucas rules all media!

He is in conrtol of Trek. Abrams is just his puppet. Sort of like Vader is to Palpatine.

Here are some conspiratorial co-winky-dinkys;
The same Broadcast Network that showcases Abram's most popular work brought us "Ewoks: Battle For Endor."

George Lucas made a prequel: Star Trek makes a prequel.
(ENT doesn't count; that was a WEE-Quel.)

John Wilkes Booth: Lee Harvey Oswald. Whoops sorry, wrong consipracy.

Imagine the next Trek minus all of George Lucas's work?

It would be like an episode of LOST with the "invisible dinosaur."

Lucas is too smart to let Trek get a head of it. Esp. since Abrams puts Star Wars a head of Star Trek. Ergo, Lucas is now the head of Star Trek.
