What "fic"? I just made that up. Point me in the right direction... I just HAVE to read it now!

Lol. No you don't. The fic I'm thinking of was an appalling Trek 'parody' porno which garnered quite a lot of fame on the old Godawful Trek Fiction site. It's most famous line began "'Surprise!' yelled Riker" and went rapidly downhill from the next clause onward. I'm not linking it, because iirc it involved quite a lot of "jokes" were things about which I have no sense of humour.

Actually, in all my reading of TNG fic, I've found very little Wes slash. Even the Pit of Voles only has one Wes/Picard drabble. I'm a bit surprised. I don't read m/m slash, but ST fandom is rife with it. You'd think we'd be falling over the stuff.

I know I've definitely read fic that paired him with both Harry Kim and Harry Potter in the past though... this may require some masochistic Googling.

I've always wanted to read Riker/Beverly fic. Not angsty OTP fic so much as an ill-advised hook-up between friends whose canon love interests both seem so frickin' high-maintainance. Always thought they'd be cute.

There's a great story called Friends and Crewmates in an Idylls zine (put out by Orion Press, if you wanted to track it down). It's set between Generations and First Contact. Not much of a plot, really, but it show a nice, friendly fling between Bev and Will (until Picard turns up unexpectedly one morning!)

Your same sex pairings make more sense than your opposite sex pairings, even though all those people are heterosexual, and that is saying something.

I'm not going to comment on the VOY and ENT ships, since I haven't seen enough of those shows, but:

-Chekov and Chapel - why??
-Sulu and Uhura - he clearly had a thing for her in both universes (see "The Naked Time"), but she didn't care, in either of the universes. It was one-sided.
-Picard and Troi - ugh. Why?! Just why? Maybe if there was no Riker/Troi or Picard/Crusher, but this way, it would just have been
-Geordi and Ro - no sexual chemistry at all. I could never see those two as anything but friends. Ro and Riker, yes. Ro and Geordie, no.
-Sisko and Nerys - theoretically, it could have been OK. But never showed any romantic or sexual interest in each other (MU doesn't count). Which might have been really fortunate, since they didn't seem to have any sexual chemistry, and it would have been too predictable ('So we have a male first in command and a female second in command... we have to play up some sexual chemistry! And they first clash and argue, but then they start respecting each other and getting along... it just has to go into a romantic direction, right? I mean it's not like a woman and a man can ever have just a professional and friendly relationship?" )
-O'Brien and Nerys - ugh. The only "attraction" there ever was between them (for something like, what, 5 minutes) was only there because she was carrying his - and Keiko's - baby. And that was just ewww.

If there hadn't been for Keiko, there would have been no baby, so there would have never been any "attraction" between them. He is just not her type. And they were never even particularly close friends.
-Odo and Dax. - Again, WHY?? There were no sparks between them, and he was always in love with Kira.

Neelix and Kim? That would have been atrocious! I still think Bashir and Garak was the best candidate for a same sex pairing. Not that it would necessarily have lasted, but it would have been cool.

I'm glad that Seven/Doctor never happened. I think the characters were great together, but I prefer them as friends rather than lovers.

Odo and Dax though? That's just crazy enough to work! I wouldn't trade it for Odo/Kira, but it's fun in a sort of "what if?" way.

I hope all you nice people don't take it amiss when I give a big ol' "YUCK!" to just about every one of these pairings! Nearly all of them are wrong on some basic level (Picard and Troi? Jeeeeeeeez - he was practically a father figure to her, for goodness' sake. And I don't even want to think about Sisko/Kira.) And several are wrong on oh, so many levels.

Among the pairings that I don't like but that don't make me go "YUCK" are those they kept dangling in front of us for years and years. Riker/Troi? Please. It was kind of boring and hackneyed, IMO, when it was first introduced, and while it might have been OK and maybe even really great if they'd handled it well...well, let's face it, they didn't. Seven years of it just annoyed me - and made it ridiculously unlikely at that. (Yes, I know that was resolved in movies, but I'm talking about the show here.)

And...I hate to say this since he always seemed like such a nice guy...but Frakes made me snicker in his love scenes, and when he didn't make me snicker, he made me cringe. He really did, and I don't think he was supposed to. That added an extra layer of unreality, IMO.

Picard/Crusher? Same thing as Riker/Troi, really - a bit cliched at first, and then it just went on and on until I was sick to death of it. (Again, I know - it's been resolved in books. Doesn't change how badly it was handled in the show, though.) And then there's the additional factor that a captain should not get romantically involved with someone under his (or her - more on this below) command. And that's the problem with Picard/Nella, too - although at least in both of these romances of Picard's, they allowed him to explore the possible consequences of getting involved, which I thought was pretty neat.

Janeway/Chakotay, as I have said far too often, is just wrong because of the special relationship a captain and the XO have to the crew - and to each other. That this particular pair is in the DQ jillions of light years from home makes it even more imperative that they don't get involved in a relationship that would have repercussions for the entire crew. Once they got home, now...that's a different story. Or at least it could have been.

One that I have always rather liked was Seven/Kim. Most folks in the Voyager forum hate this - or at least they did the last time I brought it up. They keep telling me "There's no chemistry! There's no chemistry!" But my feeling is that Seven, at least, was never allowed to have "chemistry" with anybody, except Janeway and (sorry, shippers) that always seemed very motherly-daughterly, mentory/pupilly to me. She was supposed to have some with Chakotay, of course, but that plotline was very badly written so it just didn't work.

But that's not to say there couldn't have been chemistry between Seven and Kim, if there had been a reason for it - I mean, part of chemistry is acting, right? You don't actually have to be in love with the other actor to convey chemistry, surely. And I think, since they were both young and innocent, they might have been rather sweet together. Or maybe Harry and Kes? Of course, Kes and just about anybody except Neelix would have been an enormous improvement.

Doc and Seven might have been pretty neat, too - both of them exploring their humanity together and all that. And aside from the XO-person under his command angle, Chakotay/Torres might have been really interesting, too - but I really liked Paris/Torres, so that worked out fine.

That's interesting, since Rick Berman said they kinda wanted to replicate the Kirk/McCoy relationship with Pulaski as the crusty doc... Does that mean that Jim and Bones were or could've been a romantic couple?

I know this would have almost been impossible to carry out in story lines, but I always found Spock/Chapel and intriguing match-up. That scene with the two of them in Amok Time when they are alone in Spock's quarters? Man you could cut the sexual tension with a machete. Clearly you could have had a taste for the human women run in the family too.

I think it's nineteen years, isn't it? July 2305 and October 2324 respectively, according to Conundrum. Although Nemesis makes a fuck of that.

I was referring to the actors' ages, of course, since Star Trek timeline and character ages tend to be weird and confusing. "Conundrum" makes Picard retirement age by our standards, but since people in the 24th century can live up to at least 134, the age of 60 might be viewed as we would see the age of 45. And then you've also got aliens with their longer or shorter life spans to make it all even more confusing.

^Ah, gotcha. Although the actor ages are slightly hampered by the fact that GMcF admits she's repeatedly made up birth dates when asked. Not that it matters in the least either way.
