Ships of the Line

Truman was also the guy who insisted on bombing Japan with atomic bombs, against all advice. I'm a little miffed a starship would be named after him. However, I believe a supercarrier bares that name today. Star Trek lifts names of actual ships all the time.
Truman saved millions of American and Japanese lives by using the atomic bombs on Japan and getting them to surrender without invading the mainland. He deserves to have ships named after him.

:vulcan: AGREED! As a student of history, he chose the best option.

This ain't TNZ. :vulcan:
I'd have to agree.

The Truman was apparently named for Harry S. and was seen (I believe) in the "shuttlecraft approaching the Enterprise" scene, and that answers part of the question asked by the OP.

The question of whether a command decision made by the historical Truman as Commander-in-Chief during wartime was correct falls outside the scope of this discussion and of this forum, and would better be addressed separately and in an appropriate forum (i.e., not here.)

After hearing from Kirk and Uhura about the attack, Pike attempts to notify the USS Truman of the ambush. Its likely then that Truman was the lead ship (most likely a flagship with an admiral on board) during the rescue mission. Maybe it was the one wit the huge saucer they had to fly under when they arrived.
That was the Farragut (the ship they flew under).

Your source for this?

Again, I did not hear the name "Newton." Are people mistaking this for the "Truman?"

Also, I think people are confusing the "Centaurus" with the Antares. When the ship is called out, the person says "U.S.S. Antares." The way the person says it, it comes out "U.S.S. Sentares" with the last "S" in U.S.S. carrying over to the beginning of "Antares." Unless there's another point where the name is mentioned.

^You may have a point about Newton/Truman and Antares/Centaurus... I'd be fine if it were a blur as I dislike the name Centaurus.

The source is the movie itself. Here's a screencap:

Looking a little more closely, you can just make out the ship's name on the hull.

It's entirely possible that people misheard. You may recall the insistence of some that the boy who had just dumped a vintage 'Vette in a quarry answered the hovercop "My name is James Siberius Kirk!" -- a very similar thing to your U.S.S. Antares/U.S.S. Centaurus example.

I still don't see Farragut anywhere on that ship hull. Maybe I'm just blind. Could u 'shop it and show us where? :P

I can make out "FARRAG" in the second picture - if you look at the three white splotches that form a diagonal line to the bottom-left of the body, the first is on the A, the second is on the first R, and the third is just under the G.

Hey, i have been to Walcott Iowa and if they named a ship after it, then the ship is quite a bit bigger and more densly populated.

The saucer that the Enterprise goes under is that of the USS Mayflower. A portion of the name can be seen in the shot of the Enterprise flying through the debris from the POV of underneath the engineering hull.

Here's a markup urbandk did:

In addition to the letters he's added, it's possible to faintly make out the 'F' before and the 'U' following, as well as the 'S.S.' of 'U.S.S.' to the left, along the same line.

Edit:

You're thinking of the one seen in this shot.

Actually, one can see the destroyed Mayflower behind the Farragut. If you look in the upper left corner, you can see "..OWE...". This is the Mayflower.

So, the Enterprise passes first the debris of the Farragut, then the debris of the Mayflower.

It would appear that we have two waves of ships before the Enterprise arrives at Vulcan. Unfortunately, we don't have more information on how the battle unfolded. One wave consisted of ships from Earth Spacedock and mentioned by name in Hangar 1 as cadet assignments: the Antares, the Farragut, the Hood, the Walcott. Other possible ships could include the Newton and the Odyssey. The second wave consisted of the Truman and Mayflower.

Memory Alpha has the names of some of the ships destroyed by Nero - the USS Farragut, USS Truman, USS Walcott, USS Antares, and USS Hood. I know how it got the name of the Farragut - but can anyone tell me where they got the other four from?

AND - did anyone see a recognisable class of ship? I thought that one of the ships that warped off just before Sulu stalled the E looked a little like an Oberth class - but it was a pretty quick scene.
USS FARRAGUT...Earth navel history
USS TRUMAN...Probably named for US President Harry S. Truman?
USS WALCOTT...Named for Ted P. Wallcott late 21st century inventor of the automatic banana pealer?
USS ANTARES...The star?
USS HOOD...Sunk British warship?

;)

Antares - named after a star, named after several USN ships (including one that sailed near Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7), and a ship in NASA's Apollo Program

Walcott - several geographical locations on Earth, or an alleged witch at the Salem Witch Trial

It always appeared like just one saucer to me, not two distinct pieces of debris, but I may be wrong... In the same scene in the 3rd trailer, it's impossible to make out any 'Farragut' markings on the saucer. Maybe at some point they realized no Mayflower was mentioned in the dialog and tweaked with the visuals to add the Farragut in the final cut? Just my 2 cents.

USS Enterprise- Heavily Modified Constitution Class
USS Hood- was a Connie in the OT
USS Farragut- I don't think they ever said, but I always thought it was a Connie and most non-canon sources agreed that the Prime Farragut was one.
USS Truman- Never heard of before and doesn't show up on Memory Beta as having been a non-canon ship, so I guess Kurtzman/Orci made it up.
USS Walcott- an All-new ship
USS Antares: The Antares only showed up in the Remastered TOS, I believe, it looked like this for comparison:
