Ships of the Line

The names all came from the cadet loading scenes at the Academy. Before we get started on yet another debate like we did the other day about the fate of the ships, the Cadets were all being sent to Vulcan according to the dialogue of the film. When they were boarding shuttles the names of their assigned craft were being told to them which is where the names on MA came from.

In the novelization, however, the names are all different. They are:

1.) Armstrong
2.) Defiant
3.) Excelsior
4.) Farragut
5.) Mayflower
6.) Newton

OP doesn't know who Truman is? :wtf:
He's from Australia, so he may not be up on U.S. history. I don't know all the names of Aussie PMs either. :techman:

Me either, but I'm pretty sure most of them didn't succeed the century's most important world leader, end a global War, and blow up two major cities with nuclear bombs. :)

Not to mention help set up the main strategy for the decades-long effort to win the Cold War.;)

I did hear the USS NEWTON so that one stays... the debris does show mayflower so the list goes...

1. Enterprise

2. Hood

3. Antares.

4. Farragut

5. Walcott

6. Truman

7. Mayflower

8. Newton

There should have been a USS Constitution around too - NCC 1700. I guess it could've been in the Laurentian system.

Truman was also the guy who insisted on bombing Japan with atomic bombs, against all advice. I'm a little miffed a starship would be named after him. However, I believe a supercarrier bares that name today. Star Trek lifts names of actual ships all the time.

I think that the revisionist history should be kept in forums where it can garner the proper response.

In short, you're wrong, but I won't get into why here. :techman:

Amen. If one nuclear bomb doesn't cause you to surrender and cry for momma I guess you have to try two.

USS Enterprise- Heavily Modified Constitution Class
USS Hood- was a Connie in the OT
USS Farragut- I don't think they ever said, but I always thought it was a Connie and most non-canon sources agreed that the Prime Farragut was one.
USS Truman- Never heard of before and doesn't show up on Memory Beta as having been a non-canon ship, so I guess Kurtzman/Orci made it up.
USS Walcott- an All-new ship
USS Antares: The Antares only showed up in the Remastered TOS, I believe, it looked like this for comparison:

USS Centaurus: New name and I'd guess a new ship

Memory Alpha has the names of some of the ships destroyed by Nero - the USS Farragut, USS Truman, USS Walcott, USS Antares, and USS Hood. I know how it got the name of the Farragut - but can anyone tell me where they got the other four from?
The Hood, as explained already in the thread, was one of several Constitution-class starships shown in TOS; in the case of the Hood, it appeared in "The Ultimate Computer" and the name was referenced in at least one other episode. Like the Excelsior-class Hood which appeared in TNG, it was named after the Royal Navy battleship HMS Hood, which was sunk by the Bismarck in 1941.

I don't think ANY of the ships mentioned could even BE Constitution class, since the second Constitution class ship was just FINISHED being built. So if any of those that were considered Constitution before, these are their prior versions. We all know that Starfleet recycles names. Especially the names of starships named Enterprise.

I imagine in this point in the timeline, Constitution (1700) and Enterprise (1701) are the only Constitution-class starships in existence.

After hearing from Kirk and Uhura about the attack, Pike attempts to notify the USS Truman of the ambush. Its likely then that Truman was the lead ship (most likely a flagship with an admiral on board) during the rescue mission. Maybe it was the one wit the huge saucer they had to fly under when they arrived.

When did you hear Newton? I've seen the movie twice and didn't hear that name.

That was the Farragut (the ship they flew under).

Thanks for all the posts guys - for those you who offered help identifying the namesakes, thanks, but it was where they were mentioned in the film - seems like it was all in the crew assignments - but I still don't remember hearing so many names!

Anxiously awaiting classes and better specs now. :)

Add in a B-29 raid that turns out the lights just in time to stop the attempted coup following Nagasaki by those who wanted Japan to continue the war.

Quick question: I keep seeing people comment on the Nu-Ent being a Constitution Class ship (as in the Prime Universe), but I missed any reference to this while watching the movie. Admittedly, I've only seen it once, but I was wondering if anyone was aware of or could point out such a reference in the film. And you all seem to be uber knowledgeable about the ship references.

Just curious, since they've changed so much else. Thanks for any insight anyone might be able to offer. :)

I don't think it was mentioned on screen.

The official movie site though had this dossier for the E

From MA:

The ship's dossier on the official movie website identifies the Enterprise as a Constitution-class heavy cruiser, same as its prime universe counterpart, although this detail is not stated in the film.

It's nice that they mentioned the Enterprise as a Connie "heavy cruiser" instead of Constitution-class starship. Sorry the Trek geek in me had to come out. :)

Muchas gracias, folks. I'll have to check out that part of the website!

And I agree about the Connie and Heavy Cruiser references. :bolian:

I don't remember hearing Newton, and MA doesn't list it (but that's hardly conclusive.) How many others heard this?

USS Centaurus: New name and I'd guess a new ship

The Centaurus! I remember hearing that one and MA does list it. So that gives us a problem. Seven ships other than the Enterprise, and eight possible names.

I don't remember hearing Newton or Mayflower aloud, although Mayflower was fairly visible, so I assume we should accept it?

In the novelization, however, the names are all different. They are:

1.) Armstrong
2.) Defiant
3.) Excelsior
4.) Farragut
5.) Mayflower
6.) Newton

Interesting. So the latter three are the only ones that seem to correlate with the movie? Or did Newton come from here to start with?

^Excelsior? :vulcan:

Franz Joseph listed a Constitution-class Excelsior in his lists, and there was one suggested for a "starship of the Enterprise class" in "TMoST." Presumably this one would have been that ship's predecessor.

I agree. Presumably the Consitution was leading the task force in the Laurentian System.

(Is it just me or is the Laurentian System on the verge of becoming a running joke? Not of Robau magnitude, of course. Nothing is of Robau magnitude.)
