Ships of the Line

Shim

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Memory Alpha has the names of some of the ships destroyed by Nero - the USS Farragut, USS Truman, USS Walcott, USS Antares, and USS Hood. I know how it got the name of the Farragut - but can anyone tell me where they got the other four from?

AND - did anyone see a recognisable class of ship? I thought that one of the ships that warped off just before Sulu stalled the E looked a little like an Oberth class - but it was a pretty quick scene.

The USS Antares was the ship that brought Charlie Evans to the Enterprise in the TOS episode Charlie X. Though the Hood was mentioned in TNG as Riker's assignment prior to the Enterprise D. I believe it was mentioned in TOS and I could be wrong. Maybe one of the four ships in TOS episodeThe Ultimate Computer. Oh and in another thread by Crewman 47, He said the Republic was mentioned in the movie. Of course, the Republic is another nod to the TOS. In TOS episode Court Martial, the Republic NCC-1371 was a ship Kirk was assigned and served with Ben Finney. Hope it helps

Hood was also mentioned in the movie - I believe right when you start hearing the crew assignments, you hear some crew being assigned to the U.S.S. Hood.

The tri-nacelled ship looks like a heavy frigate, a fan creation. If I recall correctly, the one on the lower left had two nacelles attached to its dorsal surface, with two secondary hulls attached to its ventral.

In hindsight, some tri-nacelled ships were also classified as dreadnoughts.

Are you asking about the origin of the names or are you asking when the names are mentioned in the film?

Sorry, I misread earlier. I think the OP is going for where the ships' names came from, instead of being mentioned in the movie.

My apologies. My thinking on Truman is probably the most obvious: Harry Truman.

The namesake of the USS Truman.

Truman was also the guy who insisted on bombing Japan with atomic bombs, against all advice. I'm a little miffed a starship would be named after him. However, I believe a supercarrier bares that name today. Star Trek lifts names of actual ships all the time.

I think that the revisionist history should be kept in forums where it can garner the proper response.

In short, you're wrong, but I won't get into why here. :techman:

The Hood and Farragut were supposedly Constitution class ships in the original TOS universe. Guess these might have been those ships' predecessors. :p

That small ship Oberth-y ship everyone keeps talking about might be a good candidate for the Antares. Then again, it doesn't have to be.

I had no idea where Walcott came from. Theo or Derek? I'd guess the latter. :)

There were a total of eight starships docked at the station, not including the small support ships (which might have been classified as starships, but none were part of the Vulcan rescue mission):

1. Enterprise

2. Hood. Obviously this is an earlier Hood than the Constitution class vessel from TOS.

3. Antares. This name comes from "Charlie X," an homage to the ship from that ep. However, it may not necessarily be the same ship.

4. Farragut. This name comes from "Obsession" (TOS), and was Kirk's first posting after the academy in the prime timeline. Although the Encyclopedia lists it as a Constitution class ship, it was probably an older ship, possibly the one from this movie.

5. Walcott. This is a town in Iowa, so I'm guessing that's what it was named after.

6. Truman. Named after the 33rd president of the United States.

7. Mayflower. Named after the ship which brought the Pilgrims to America (this name is just speculation. One of the wrecked saucers shows the letters "LOWER" with the first half of the name off the screen, so I'm guessing that it's Mayflower.

8. ? (no other name was spoken in dialog to my knowledge.)

Also, all the ships used were new CG models. The Oberth class was not among them.

OP doesn't know who Truman is? :wtf:
He's from Australia, so he may not be up on U.S. history. I don't know all the names of Aussie PMs either. :techman:

Me either, but I'm pretty sure most of them didn't succeed the century's most important world leader, end a global War, and blow up two major cities with nuclear bombs. :)
