Shatnertage's Mostly-1st-Time Watch Thread

I remember the first time I saw Meridian. My dad just happened to come into the room and watched about two minutes of the A-plot (the scene where Dax agrees to stay - "What do you think?!") After that much he declared, "Son, why the hell are you watching this?" I told that it wasn't one of the great episodes. To which he said, "Great?! It isn't even any good!" Then he refused to watch anymore.

Of course, I'm currently in the process of having my parents watch the whole series. When we came to this episode, he obviously didn't remember it and thought it was alright. I just left thinking.... W. T. F! :wtf:

Seriously though, Meridian is awful. It combines some of the worst things about DS9, IMO - 1.) lame story, 2.) boring writing, and 3.) Dax as the main character. Even Jeffery Combs can't save it for me.

I haven't seen some of Voyager, so someone will have to enlighten me. Did Seven of Nine really have a stash of ChakotayPorn?

^ Here's a summary:

Seven of Nine is in the holodeck and orders the computer to accept the changes she has made to her personal quarters in her program and begin the program. She is dressed in a stunning red dress with her hair fully down again. She walks over to a mirror and checks herself out. Holo-Chakotay tells her she looks perfect.

They banter and flirt over a bottle of wine. Seven then asks him to assist her in the kitchen. Chakotay compliments her on her cooking and it devolves into more flirting including her licking sauce off his finger in order to determine whether it needed more salt. Hearing the music in the background, Chakotay wonders if Seven has begun playing an instrument. She has indeed. The Doctor has been giving her piano lessons, but she requires more practice before Chakotay can hear her.

They go back to preparing the meal and she notices a flaw in Chakotay's technique. In order to help correct it, she takes his hand and helps him with some very intimate contact. They both realize what's going on and smile at each other. They try to tackle the wine again and she gently traces the contours of his face. She tells him he has "an intriguing facial structure." They start to kiss and after a moment, a tiny alarm is heard, alerting Seven.

From Memory Alpha: VOY: "Human Error"

And she totally gets busted later...by the Doctor. If you've got Netflix, I highly suggest watching "Human Error" to see for yourself.

Romance-of-the-week episodes are the worst kind of episode for me. Putting a character in a real relationship that develops over weeks or years is fine, in some instances it can be great, but does anybody really care about these pointless quickie relationships? You know, except for rabid Janeway fans.

Meridian is the worst offender in my book. Firstly, Jadzia and plot-device-man have no chemistry at all. None. Secondly, am I supposed to believe that Jadzia is so unfulfilled in her life that she'd be willing to run away with Mr Bland? I don't buy that, not for a second.

You know how this episode could have been improved? 45 minutes of Quark in a woman's body. :shifty:

In general I don't like the physically romantic stuff in Trek much, not because I'm a prude, but there's something about watching Trek characters make out that just seems completely squicky. It's like walking in on your grandparents going at it or something. Very awkward.

Reading the summary on Memory Alpha can't quite communicate the great wrongness of watching Chakotay lick sauce off of Seven's finger.

For me it works best when it's played for laughs, like with Dax and Bashir in IWWH, or the Doctor grabbing Janeway's rump in "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy." And, naturally, the Goddess of Empathy stuff from "Hollow Pursuits."

I'd like to join in the Meridian-bashing; because seriously, that abomination of an episode deserves to be bashed. I saw it for the first time earlier this year and was astonished that such a godawful A-story ever got commissioned in the first place. It just feels like a spec script that was written over a week by a kid after school hours. It's absurd, corny, witless, overly earnest and (IMHO) misrepresentative of the main characters. The actors phone it in for the most part, and I can't really blame them. You can't make a purse out of a pig's ear. Now I kind of see the value in mediocre episodes of Tv, because they allow you to calibrate a scale and appreciate the good ones, but damn!:) The Dax/Sisko bits aren't too bad, though, I suppose.

Anyway, the B-story was well executed, if I recall. If the episode has a saving grace then that would be it.

I don't know. The B-Story was alright, but nothing I'd endure the A-Story again for. If it had been padded out more, it could have worked, but about 30 minutes of fucking Meridian planet and Dax falling in love suddenly? Uh, no.

I just have to call Meridian my worst episode of the series, definitely. Oh and the B-Story. That wasn't part of Meridian. You know, like, I wish it wasn't, because it is tainted by mere association.

Same here.

Why are you talking about TATV? ;)

It is in my nature to be mildly amused by episodes like...

"Civil Defense"

I'm thinking that they've got a big, FX-lavish episode coming up, so they needed to save some money and decided that a bottle show about the station trying to kill them would be the best way to do so....

I loved Dukat in this ep. He made it.

Well, I finally made it through...

"Meridian"

This one wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. The A story was pretty limp, but the B-story was actually pretty good...
I liked the idea of the planet that fades in & out -- but not the Dax story.

No DS9 for at least another day--waiting for a disc from Netflix. Anyone know when they start streaming it?

Sorry, I don't! I've never actually had a Netflix subscription. I should work on that someday. I just tend to buy the shows I really like and miss out on the rest, including, no doubt, several shows I probably would like if I had a subscription.

>_>
