I'm back with an episode that's all about...
"Cardassians"
I've gotta say that's not the best title they could have come up with. But I like the episode right away, because it's got Garak in it. I remember having seen a few episodes with Garak back in the day, and I thought he was on the show much more than he was--only once in the first season. He reminds of Benjamin Linus from
Lost (I know he came first), in that you know what he's saying is probably a lie, but you listen anyway. Great, great character.
So the crux of the episode is that there's an orphan problem on Bajor that Gul Dukat's only too happy to fix. I don't quite get the logic what happened (did Dukat plan the whole thing, with Rugal's family coming to the station, or did he just react quickly), but I liked that the episode was taking a deeper look at one of the consequences of the occupation.
And it had Garak.
And, as a special bonus, we have Sisko taking the piss out of Bashir twice! You can't get much better than that. And we learn that Sisko wears a flowing red robe with what looks like a purple Transformers logo on the front to bed.
Quark debuted (I think) a new jacket that looked vaguely reminiscent of a Frank Lloyd Wright
stained glass pattern.
What is it with people and overly-intricate pajamas on Trek? Doesn't anyone in the future wear sweats/t-shirts to bed anymore? Since he's getting direct calls at night from foreign dignitaries, you'd think he'd want something more functional.
The other thing that stuck out about this episode is that it confirmed why I don't like Keiko very much. The character just isn't very smart. After having spent the day with Rugal, and presumably learned that even though he's Cardassian he was raised on Bajor and hates everything Cardassian, she makes him a special Cardassian meal. Plus, her husband saw action in the Cardassian War, so probably isn't so big on Cardy cuisine.
I wish Rugal had looked at the stew, looked at Keiko, and said, "Lady, you are dumber than a box of sticks."
That's what I took away from the episode. Nice to see Garak, nice to see Dukat. Good one, overall.
