Shatner's Reaction

In view of James Cawley being in the film, how do you think William Shatner will feel with him being left out and do you think it is possible to still include him as well and have something like a hat trick of three "Kirks" in the film?

Lets not over react here... Cawley is very likely not playing "Kirk", so there's zero need for Shatner to be upset.

Considering it's most likely a non-speaking background walk on; and IF James Crawley is getting paid, it's 'extra' pay whuich is usually $50 and a box lunch - I kind of doubt William Shatner would care one way or the other.

Shatner's already in the film. All this stuff about him not being in it is a clever publicity stunt. After a while he'll be announced as being in the film and there will be another swell of free publicity.

I don't know and I don't care how he feels.

I love those old guys but they've had their time with Trek. Let it rest already and let's move on.

We don't have to have them in every single movie.

Didn't Shatner say he wouldn't do a cameo?

Well, what Cawley is doing is in all likelihood less than a cameo.

Cawley will probably be someone way in the background.

He will not have a speaking or action role. He'll be walking in a corridor, or working in engineering or something. He won't have a bridge part. May not even be on the Enterprise herself.

I wonder what they're doing about his hair, though...

Gah, I hope not. It would be hard to think of anything more pointless and unnecessary.

Welcome, brother, to the fraternity of the light.

You and I, a few others. We see it.

Not all are so blessed.

Hey man, that's cool. I wouldn't mind seeing Shatner in the film. But I won't give a shit if he's not in it.

Which brings me to my point: he's not in it. All the press so far says he's not. And J.J.'s obviously no secret to high profile productions. I have never once seen a J.J. Abrams production (including every episode of Lost) where they said they were gonna do one thing and then ended up doing another. They may be secretive and crafty, but they're not liars.

I've also wondered if they'll surprise everyone by making the very first people to see the film gasp at the sight of Shatner playing Kirk, something nobody will know about until the very first public showing.

I'm not leaning more in that direction than in the other, but it's a nagging suspicion.

If this happens, be sure the resulting online explosion will get even more people to see the movie than would have otherwise.

It might be the 30 second scene some have suggested, older Spock returning to his own era only to find Kirk alive and waiting for him, but it'd still be Shatner playing Kirk, and it'd have its intended effect.

Again, I'm not pretty well convinced it'll happen, but if it does it won't surprise me.

Imagine you are a big iconic multimillionaire star, who is suddenly usurped by an Kirk impersonator.Would you not be enraged, slighted, mad with anger, slapped in the face insult, by your exclusion from that which made you rich and famous.

You would be ego crushed and Shatner has a vast ego.

We can only imagine his current fame of mind and hope he does not do something extreme that may harm him or his health.A wounded ego according to Dr Freud can result in a person making wrong life style choices based on a perceptual
view of ego redundancy.Already in previous interviews he has expressed resentment and anger, indicating his deeper hurt.

If I had that kind of money I couldn't really see myself giving a shit, honestly.

I think people need to get some perspective here.

If Shatner wanted to be in the movie as an extra, he would be. He doesn't though, he wants to play Kirk.

This fan film guy is playing an extra, not Kirk. Shatner would be as pissed off about him being in the film as he would be over any other extra cast in the movie.

It's not being in the movie that the obstacle. It's playing James T Kirk. ;)

How would you feel if somebody took over your job and you got shut out left looking in,but without entry anywhere in?

Would you not be incensed?

Shatner hasn't had a job of playing Kirk in many years. His current job is playing a popular character on a well received show Boston Legal, and Priceline commercials, all of which I'm sure he's quite well paid. I find it hard to believe he would be "incensed" about it, though there probably is some ego bruising. I'm sure he'll get it over though. For Crawley, we are talking about just a walk-on part. Shatner has stated he doesn't do cameos.
