I mean STD Sarek looks nothing like TOS Sarek, STD Mudd looks nothing like TOS Mudd, STD Klingons look nothing like TOS Klingons, STD technology looks nothing like TOS technology etc. The makers of discovery have no interest in having things/people look like they are meant to

Black actresses are not the problem. Whoopi is good as Guinan. Although miss Martin Green is awful as Burnham.

I guess you missed the whole "visual reboot" thing from the past year or so. Also Green is doing amazing in my opinion. Her character is a human who was raised on Vulcan in the Vulcan ways..........once again maybe you missed Sarek telling her to behave in Episode 1 or Georgiou saying "wow you really HAVE been away from humans for too long......." Every episode she has slowly started to progress in her way that she interacts with her shipmates. First with prodding from Tilly, and now on her own. Did you notice that when they were jogging at the beginning of Lethe and Tilly responds to her mentoring she smiles a couple of times? But the end of the episode she is starting to really embrace her human emotions and reintroduces herself to Ash. I believe Green is giving exactly what she is being directed to give and the subtle little touches are nice........

Short of necromancing the original dead actors, who wouldn't look the right age for the time period anyway, or doing some horrible and expensive uncanny valley CGI doppelgänger which totally takes you out of the narrative, I'm not sure what else you'd like them to do? Sarek shares roughly the same physical characteristics and wears Vulcan robes, so I'm not sure what your complaint is with him. Mudd is thinner and wears more dark leather and has more facial hair, but since this is ten years before we saw him in TOS, I don't know why it would be unreasonable for him to wear different clothes or not have gained more weight yet or to have a beard.

Perhaps I am mixing up my dislike of the character with Greens ability to portray her. Green played a similar joyless character on walking dead but that character fitted that show. Burnham does have a touch of t’pol and seven of nine about her but they were secondary characters as part of a crew where as we have to look at Burnham for most of the episode and I can’t like her.

She's also played a bubbly practical joker girlfriend on New Girl............The girl can act. She just has portrayed stoic characters. I believe she will get looser and more amicable as the season progresses. I don't think the writer really want you to like her yet.

Probably not to use those characters at all. Whilst I personally have no huge problem with these particular recasts, I can certainly understand how someone could.

Oh look another 'Bring Back Shat' thread for me to write in! :P

I don't think he should play April, my ideal would be Paul McGann but he's a regular in a British medical soap now.

If Shat were to appear in Discovery, it would have to be as Tiberius Kirk, Jim's grandaddy, or time travelling Mirror Kirk. We don't know his (canon) fate.

Would they be able to get Chris Pine to guest in a TV show as Lt Kirk? He's a pretty big movie star now.

Maybe they can’t do much about the actors but they can do something about the Klingons and the technology. Hopefully Ash is an augmented Klingon and we will start seeing a lot of them.

Cadet Kirk (or whatever his rank is) should be roughly the same class as Cadet Tilly, or perhaps a year ahead of her. This places him either at the Academy, on his cadet cruise (like Tilly is) just on either USS Republic, or on USS Farragut (also possibly his first post-graduation assignment), depending on timing and such.

However, there was the mention Kirk being involved in the "Vulcanian Expedition", whatever that is. I wonder if it is possible for a new Starfleet cadet to gain admittance into the Vulcan Expeditionary Group right out of Starfleet Academy? Kirk on a Vulcan ship for four months to a year would be something. Even if it was basically a cultural exchange program
