VOODOO's only been going on about this for about 100 years.

Let him have his poll.

It's become trendy here to bash Shatner, but before you do take a look at a recent USA Today poll where 70% of the general public said they wanted Shatner back as Kirk in the new film.

You make that sound as if it were some kind of scientific, representative poll.

It wasn't. It was a God damned Internet poll, the (ahem) methodology and results of which are meaningless and no better than logrolling.

Dennis:

Nowhere did I say the film couldn't do well w/out Shatner + I agree that poll is far from a scientific poll, but the poll that was not posted on a site like this (which is for the die hards)and it did show a decided advantage for Shatner being in the film.

Arlo: Your wrong. The goal for this film is to bring that general audience (the one that views ST as Kirk + Spock) back into the mix.

The avg TOS film made $170.4 million adjusted for inflation.
The avg TNG film made $93.8 adjusted for inflation.

We all know how well the post TNG series did. Why do you think we are getting a new ST film w/Leonard Nimoy about Kirk and Spock? Don't you think Paramount would love to trot out a "Voyager" film that would cost half of what this new film is costing them? The reason they don't is because they know nobody cares about anything else in the ST universe except Kirk + Spock.

This film is designed to get that general audience (that understands Star Trek to be Kirk + Spock played by Nimoy + Shatner) that ST once enjoyed back. I don't know if you understand this but Star Trek was a huge franchise at one time. Not the niche market it has become in recent years when "Enterprise" couldn't get 1 million people per week to watch for free at home.

Again, the film does not need Shatner to be a success, but what is the downside? Wouldn't the film stand more of a chance with Shatner on board?

Aren't Shatner + Nimoy pop icon's in their respective roles much like Harrsion Ford is as Indiana Jones? Doesn't that count for something?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one topic.

It is, in fact, meaningless because there is no way of knowing who the respondents are - or if, in fact, there are more than a few logrollers.

Therefore, it has no value whatever in any process of evaluating the importance of Nimoy or Shatner to the film.

None. Nada. Zip.

I'll trust Abrams' judgment about a film he's making before I'll trust the combined "votes" of every fanatic who can operate a computer mouse and has too much time on his/her hands.

I agree that Abrams will do a fine job on this film. I like every move the creative team has made public about this film to this point.

I like the cast, I like the director, I like the writers, I like the general sense of respect they and Paramount are giving this project and most of all I like the fact that they (Paramount)finally understand the only way this franchise survives is if they go back to Kirk,Spock + TOS.

The one point I disagree on is Shatner. I don't see how his presence in a Star Trek film (a make or break ST film at that) is anything but a positive. The man is an icon as Kirk. Why not take advantage of that?

Even Leonard Nimoy himself said the film would be better off with Shatner in it.

Where is the downside?

Elton:

"Voodoo has been going on about this for 100 years"

True, and it seems that tptb finally came to their senses and agreed with me that nobody cares about ST unless Kirk + Spock are involved.

After 100 years I got the victory I wanted.

ps: They should have listened to me a decade ago so the franchise would not have had to suffer the long and embarrassing death it had to endure.

Starman:

Yeah, he said it at a convention. Don't ask me where or when.

Dennis:

Your right. Who cares? I'm sick + I'm going to bed. Good night.

Good work, VOODOOXI! You are clearly the straw that broke the camel's back. And we who are about to die salute you.

Okay, let's all close our eyes and imagine for a second that Shatner shows up in a surprise cameo (which for the record, along with saying he's not in the film, he also said he doesn't so cameos) who is Shatner's presence going to attract? NO ONE!! Why? Because it's a secret cameo, no one's going to freaking know about it!

Let's assume for a moment that a little Trekkie walks out of the theater, and posts on the internet that Shatner shows up in his super secret cameo. Who will go to the movie because of that post? NO ONE!! Why? Because no one except other Trekkies (who are almost guarenteed to go see it anyways) are going to read that post!

Besides, all secrecy aside, how many people are really going to watch a Star Trek movie because Shatner's in it for five minutes? Realistically, almost nobody. And, do you think Abrams included enough money in his $150 million budget to do a massive rewrite and reshooting of the script? Seriously, let's give this a rest until you actually have something indicating that he is in it, rather than rehashed ideas and calling Shatner and Abrams liars.

And, for the record, while I do know Shatner is popular, he isn't going to make or break the movie. If the movie fails without him, odds are it will still fail with him. If it is going to succeed, it isn't going to succeed because he shows up.

Look, they just agreed to put Shatner in the movie. So you guys are all wasting your breath trying to talk them back out of it again.

Star Trek XI would be more of an event with both Shatner + Nimoy as opposed to just Nimoy.
Except I believe it is JJ Abrams intention to make it an event WITHOUT Shatner. To attempt to make the draw Star Trek and the character of Kirk, not William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, or anyone else. If you've noticed the advertising, which is what will convince the great unwashed masses NOT reading a Star Trek message board at 10 o'clock at night to see the movie, hasn't played up Nimoy much at all. The most he's gotten so far is a short voiceover tidbit on the teaser and his name listed right with everyone else in the credits.

I think the Production crew are shooting to create interest in the franchise, not who is portraying characters. Even if, as I've seen mentioned so many times around here, "the average person only cares about Shatner, not Star Trek or Kirk," I believe that is the very attitude he is attempting to change.

"Ohmigod - I wasn't going to see this thing, but my friend saw it and says that William Shatner is in the last scene!

"I mean, I love Shatner - he's great on 'Boston Legal!' And here he's actually going to be dressed up as Captain Kirk for three minutes at the end of 'Star Trek'!

"My friend says that Shatner and Nimoy even make a joke and smile at each other.

"Tell everybody!"

Boston legal seems to be coming to an end,it's a shame cus I think it's the best thing shatner has done since trek, may be he will be free to do a part in this.
