This is largely fueled by the end of the writer's strike (they COULD alter the script to include him) AND the delay in release (they COULD have time to re-shoot with him). There is no sound reason for this to happen, but as long as the possibility exists, there will be those who clamour for it.

Ok so are you thinking a heavy rewrite/reshoot time to have him as Kirk instead of Pine (stupid idea) or to somehow include him in the future as a result of the time travel stuff.

If the first it sounds like a fans wet dream, hes too old and it would cost to much to use a computer to deage him plus that means he would need to be Kirk in future movies.

If hes at the end that wouldnt require a reshoot...cant be another way for him to be in it as hes dead

That wouldn't just be a stupid idea, that would be the most spectacularly idiotic decision ever in the history of movie production. That would be like hiring Uwe Boll to be the director of a $300 million blockbuster. And it also wouldn't please the fans, becaue it would make absolutely no sense canon-wise that Kirk is 40 years older than all the others on the ship.

Too right, although I dont really think thats what they were suggesting, as is theres no way to get Shatner in unless its a cameo at the end or as an older pre Enterprise B Kirk in one of the multiple timelines.

Nimoy shouldnt really be in this other than its a plot device for the time travel story which will account for any changes in the sets, costumes, props and general timeline

Feel sorry for Shanter with him feeling snubbed and all, but hes had his story and in any future films we wont be seeing Nimoy again either (and hopefully no other old guard cameos)

Or more likely its as the writer's themselves have said, Nimoy is integral to the story. If one is to take that at face value one can't make the leap that "Nimoy shouldn't be in this either" since then there'd be no story or movie...

"Let Kevin Costner make 'Waterworld.'"

I mean to make a new step they mayb shouldnt have included any of them, but then this movie will be setting up a new series of films hopefully which will stand on their own....and his Spock is integral to the story that will set this into motion, theres no way for an older Kirk to be as in (Nimoy) Spocks timeline hes already dead.

Anywho I doubt this is the last time we will see "The Shats back I knows" type threads over the next 15 months

Ah. Well, I still stand by my postion that if they say he's not in it, then he's not. Besides, if hiring somone popular was so important, where the frak is Matt Damon or Will Smith? :)
Because some of us wouldn't pay to see the retarded guy or jug ears/lizard eyes, that's why.

I think the original poster is on to something since the timing of the schedule change and the end of the writers strike is awfully convenient. It may amount to little more than a cameo, but I suspect Shatner will indeed be in the film.

So, anyone else like to beat this dead horse? I think it's still got a little life in it.

Snip.

Is it still Bring Your Own Stick?
Can we show a little taste in photo selection -- that photo is offensive and sickening.

If Shatner's presence would make this movie an economic sure thing then why not just reveal that he's in it? To quote Dr. Strangelove, "The whole point of a doomsday device is lost if you keep it a secret!"

The reason they haven't revealed Shatner as their secret weapon is twofold: 1) Nobody would care and 2) HE'S NOT IN THE MOVIE.

Inferring a Shatner cameo from the timing of this makes no sense, because inserting him into the film even in a somewhat substantial way would not require a five month delay in release - in fact, given the length of the shoot and the amount of post-production time that was built into the original schedule, it should not require any delay at all.

The two things would be unrelated.

Shatner wasn't left out of the movie because they just forgot and then went "Ohmigod the fans have spoken. Too bad we're in a writer's strike now and can't fix it." Any contingency plans they had to incorporate a small role for him were doubtless in place before the strike began.

I don't hate Shatner, but his more radical fans that insist on starting thread after thread as to why and how Shatner should or will be in this movie? Well, "hate" is an awfully strong word, but I might be getting there before May 2009.

Hey, at least that was a cool movie - Star Trek XI with Shatner as Kirk (replacing Pine in the middle of the production) would be the new dictionary definition of "suck". ;)

There are several sound reasons for it to happen. That doesn't mean that it will happen or should happen, but to say "there is no sound reason" is just silly.
