I have said this from day one, and I continue to say it. Shatner will be in this movie. It doesn't matter whether or not you want him to be in the movie;he will be.

I believe the move to May 09 is being driven by Paramount, and one of the reasons is to get Shatner in the movie. Why?

Let me tell you why he will be in the movie. You may not agree, but oh well. There are simple truths that MUST be stated.

1. Shatner by far, and no one is even close, is the most popular person to come from Trek. He is far more popular than Nimoy-Roddenberry-Stewart-Spiner..anyone. Some of you will try to deny this but it just is not debateable. Some of you hate the guy, and I understand. Some of his own fellow cast members (envious fools that they are) hate him as well. But it does not matter. He is by far Mr. Star Trek.

2. His Q rating is incredibly high for someone his age in the business. He is the only Emmy award winning 'captain' of Star Trek. He is credited for making Price Line as big as it is. Boston Legal has done pretty well, and he/Spader are the two main reasons why.

And PR is going to be a big thing for this movie. Yes, it is introducing a new cast. But there will be a PR campaign aimed at the baby-boomer set as well. And it will be very simple "Shatner/Nimoy together one last time". Doesn't matter that Star Trek 6 was the last TOS movie. They want to put people in those seats, and aiming a young sexy cast at the young kids will be one part of it. And luring in the old farts with Shatner/Nimoy will be the other part.

Simple economics. Shatner will be in this movie.

The BEAN COUNTERS will make sure that he is.

Unless there's a really really strong story-driven reason for Shatner being in there (and as far as I can tell, there isn't. They'd have to pretty much ABANDON the plotline they've chosen in order to do that, I have strong reason to believe), I DO NOT WANT SHATNER IN THIS MOVIE.

I like Shatner. If it were possible to clone the guy or "de-age" him (in reality, not through creepy CGI effects like in X-Men3, I mean), I'd be all for him being in the flick. It it were possible to do a fully-believable CGI version, I'd be for that as well. But since none of that is an option, and since this movie is mainly about who Kirk is and how he came to be who he's remembered as, I'm perfectly contented with a decent younger actor slipping into the role... provided that the younger actor reasonably resembles him (Pine isn't perfect, but he's not bad!) and that the character as performed is consistent with the character as he's been portrayed in the past (which is very likely to be the case).

In my mind, Shatner IS Kirk... or rather, Kirk is Shatner as he'd LIKE to be. But since there's no plausible, believable way to have him play a 20-something Kirk today, and since this movie is about THAT Kirk... I'd be repulsed if he DID show up.

So, anyone else like to beat this dead horse? I think it's still got a little life in it. You know, RDA was, without a doubt, Mr Stargate, but there is a SG1 movie coming out without him. Or was it pushed back from last year to make time to fit him in? Lets give it a rest. Posting the same argument over and over again won't make it any more or less of a reality.

I lied, there actually was one new argument in there: What is a "Q" rating?

The "Cliff's Notes" version: A "Q Rating" is a marketing term relating the relative recognition levels of various people.

Someone nobody has ever heard of has a very low "Q-rating." Someone who EVERYBODY know has a very HIGH "Q-rating." I believe there's also some "favorable versus unfavorable" element in there, but someone everybody knows and everybody hates is still rated higher than someone only a few people konw, but who is loved by everyone who knows them.

Make sense?

Ah. Well, I still stand by my postion that if they say he's not in it, then he's not. Besides, if hiring somone popular was so important, where the frak is Matt Damon or Will Smith? :)

Why do these posts keep popping up about Shatner being in it when Shatner himself says he's not in it ?
Do people take Shatner at his word anymore ?

Well, just because you're popular doesn't mean you can't be a liar.

Well, that's the thing, Shatner never struck me as someone who lies, he may be a jokester and a prankster, but not a lier, yea yea yea, he did pull a fast one on Riverside, but I see that more of him being a prankster & jokester type.
