Shatner WAS Kirk!

Just saw the movie today and if there are three words that sum up my experiencing this movie, it's those.

Pine owns that character now. he's taken the intellect, drunken swagger and bravado and stoic courage of James Tiberius Kirk and knocked it up several notches. This movie was like the atomic powered defibrillator that the franchise needed. And it was done with the utmost respect for what has come before. Before this movie, I wasn't sure if there was going to be a Star Trek in the near future. But after this, there will be another 40 years of Trek to enjoy! Live Long and Prosper!:D

Shatner will always be James T. Kirk. He played the part from 1966-1994. Pine did a fine job of carrying on Kirk's legacy, but I will not simply dismiss Shatner just because Pine is the new guy in the role.

Pine has only been Kirk in ONE Trek movie.

Shatner has been Kirk in TOS and SEVEN Trek films.

To alter the imortal words of Darth Vader

"Trek is with you young Pine, but you are not Kirk yet!"

Let me just say that even though William Shatner was James T. Kirk, Chris Pine is the new James T. Kirk. Pine totally had the character pinned down.

"I got your gun"

That Romulan was a bit full of it. Nero was on the right rack, villain-wise, and would have killed our Jimmy, but the other one should have just snapped his neck instead of giving into the urge of sneering.

Anyways, Pine is Kirk now, and he rocks.

Chris Pine is the Kirk for this new generation.. In time, he will grow into the roll as he will no doubt be in future Trek movies as the famed Captain James T. Kirk... Kudos Chris Pine!!!

Did you catch the Shatnerian grin at the end? Awesome!! :)

That was a masterful touch and well placed at the end. Pine was absolutely the Kirk character on his own, but it was cool of him to acknowledge Shatner's contribution to the character too.

what a ship, what a crew!

Chill... my friend. Chill.

Pine did a fantastic job with the character. Let's see how he adds seasoning to it in the years to come.

Now, for my money he doesn't hold a candle to Shatner's portrayal. Let's see Pine romance a woman like Shatner's Kirk. Let's see Pine evoke emotion with a line like "get two tractor beams on that shuttlecraft!". Let's see Pine restore faith in the crew and deflate a hopeless situation instantly ala Shatner at the end of the Enterprise Incident.

Then we can talk.

I like this thread! It's exciting!
Why do I get the feeling I've seen the birth of the next memetic mutation?

Anyway, topic.

Of course Pine doesn't hold a candle to Shatner yet, the candle's just been lit. I loved what I saw though and, with everything else falling into place from the movie - not the same places, but they fit nonetheless - I'm looking forward to Trek's future.

Also, Pine's prettier.

What a huge steaming pile of bullshit. There is no way, no way that this movie will generate anything close to what TOS did. In the unlikely event that Trek survives another 40 years I think you will see stories based on the franchise as a whole rather than simply the JJ verse.

Meh 2 or 3 movies at most. Shatner will always own this role moreso than Pine. Though I didnt hate Pines version. His was one of the few portrayals of the TOS crew I actually liked.
