Shatner WAS Kirk!

blockaderunner

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Just saw the movie today and if there are three words that sum up my experiencing this movie, it's those.

Pine owns that character now. he's taken the intellect, drunken swagger and bravado and stoic courage of James Tiberius Kirk and knocked it up several notches. This movie was like the atomic powered defibrillator that the franchise needed. And it was done with the utmost respect for what has come before. Before this movie, I wasn't sure if there was going to be a Star Trek in the near future. But after this, there will be another 40 years of Trek to enjoy! Live Long and Prosper!:D

I'd like to propose that both Shatner and Pine are Kirk. They're both phenomenal and they both have a very interesting take on it.

You're goddamn right!!! :)

Honestly, before the film, and during the first few scenes, I had this sense of "Oh boy here we go, Johnny Storm from Fantastic Four, stupid swaggering asshole eyeing every piece of ass that walks across the screen"...but then something happened...suddenly, this guy who has always preferred Spock and McCoy found himself rooting for this new Kirk...I love Shatner, but Pine was just so damn good, he blew me away...Urban was a stand out, but Pine took the character and RAN with it...I am so damn happy, seriously...this guy's got looks AND brains, and I can't wait to see what's next

Did you catch the Shatnerian grin at the end? Awesome!! :)

Just wait until next movie... maybe he'll let a few more of those mannerisms in. Not the hyper-exaggerated ones, mind you, but the ones that worked.

Assuming another movie is forthcoming though.

Prays to the box-office gods.

Shatner is Kirk in quite a few movies and episodes, and Pine is Kirk in this one. That works fine.
They are different people with the same name. Different sperm impregnated Kirk's mother in the new timeline. Biologically they are brothers.

Errr I suppose that's possible, but isn't it cooler to assume they're the same guy?
It would take a huge leap of faith to assume that the same sperm manage to impregnate Kirk's mother given the changes to the timeline.

Nurture vs Nature. Same guy but with different life experiences.

Wait I just realized that Kirk's mother was waaaay pregnant when Nero showed up.

I have no idea why the Kirks don't look the same.

Yeah except that it's not possible...

Have we forgotten that Spock Prime (I don't like calling him that either, but my action figure says Original Spock, and that sounds like, well, an action figure!!!) immediately recognizes his old friend?? Obviously this is meant to convey that this is the same James T. Kirk, different universe but same sperm-n-eggs...just like he recognizes Scotty and his younger self...

Uhm, have you taken sex-ed yet? Because I'm not sure you know how babies are made.

Here's the thing: The sperm are involved in the part that's 9 months BEFORE the timeline split.

If you need to know more, ask your parents.

Well if that's true in the Star Trek universe, how come alien species are able to successfully mate?

Also, in case you haven't noticed, this is a Star Trek forum. I think that there are probably many, many people here who do not understand how sex works.
