I'm just trippin' at how determined people are to force an interpretation that makes them comfortable on the rest of the world as if it were a fact.

Which is exactly what you are doing. ;)

As it is also the reason you started this thread.

As it is also the reason you are so sure Shatner is being serious.

Nah. My "comfort level" isn't being challenged here. :)

It is continually being challenged by those who defend Shatner and/or insist that he be included in Star Trek XI.

Sam, Sam...you're off your game.

Merry Christmas, pal.

I'm still pissed that Dennis hasn't acknowledged he mis-attributed the "Unified Shatner Theory" to someone completely else!

Yeah, it was too late to edit the original post.

Damn these holiday usernames, anyway.

And I'm pissed that...

...hmm...actually I'm not pissed.

But I should be. Maybe if Shatner came to my house and broke my windows. I hear he's a mean-spirited ol' bastard.

Sam, Sam...you're off your game.

Could be.

But if you and I don't keep each other honest, I don't know who will.

Merry Christmas, pal.

And to all a good night. :D

So it was a joke, ok...but for the sake of a what if discussion let's pretend it wasn't.

He would have EVERY RIGHT TO WISH THAT. Pretend that you were the lead singer in a huge successful band, then members broke off and had side bands that were popular, but popular in large part because of the original band, which was majorly you. THEN some of these guys reform the original band without you. You'd all want it to fall flat on its face and you all know it.

This thread is retarded.

WRONG!

I don't know why. You just are. And I felt like saying it. So there. :scream: :p

And my comfort level is none of your business.

Oooo...We play game now?

He would have EVERY RIGHT TO WISH THAT.
True, the Thought-Police will probably let it slide this time.

Pretend that you were the lead singer in a huge successful band, then members broke off and had side bands that were popular, but popular in large part because of the original band, which was majorly you.
Which would probably make me Gene Roddenberry or John Lenon, and therefore dead.

THEN some of these guys reform the original band without you.
...Then it's actually not the original band, right?

You'd all want it to fall flat on its face and you all know it.
Actually, since I'd be either dead or a huge sucess in a New Band, I wouldn't care. However, I would probably end up attacking a photographer with an umbrella if they asked about Berman or Braga.

This thread is retarded.
Now now, don't hurt the thread's feelings.

Pal, ya gotta stop taking all this stuff so seriously... ;)

(I'm sorry, the bit with th umbrella had me imagining a Monty Python sketch, too... made me laugh out loud, and dammit, got orange juice on my keyboard!)

Five pages of this.

Five.

I just can't get it up to care about this shit. Maybe the Star Trektomy I had performed a few years ago is finally taking effect. I'm cured!

Eh, probably not.

^^ This site need a Hall Of Shame forum so threads like this one go and die in shame, instead of on the floor in front o everybody....slowly.

Good Lord. It was an offhand remark, and a joke at that.

Offhand? We don't actually have any context for the remark at all.

You know, if one wanted to defend Shatner in this instance one could easily do a great deal better job of it than most attempts so far. One could start by perusing the original report.

Wouldn't "I think" be understood?

Does everyone have to go through the trouble of posting "In my opinion..." or "I think..." he was joking? I'm under the impression people are posting what they think as opinions they have where the context is up to interpretation not posting what they "know" as facts with context and proof laid out in front of them. There's a difference between the two.

People need to defend their facts but they don't need to defend their opinions and without anything concrete there isn't much to base a defense on anyway.

Maybe Shatner's joking, maybe he's not, there's no inarguable way to tell and no matter what he says, most people -- pro or con -- have already made up their mind. If William Shatner says he was joking you're not going to be swayed, you'll say he's saving face. If someone puts together an argument that he wasn't joking, those who don't believe it won't be swayed either, they'll say it was a friendly jibe.

This whole thread is an irresolvable exercise by anything that's not a Page 2 of the forum death.

Honestly, I don't think so as Paramount has made a ton of cash over the years; and while Shatner definitely (and finally) got a bigger taste of that from the six TOS and one TNG film he appeared in - he [probably still feels 'owed' for all the days he spent living out of his truck and doing margerine commercials. Still, he has no one to blame but himself for agreeing to appear in a film where Kirk is killed off.

Finally, he COULD have said it in jest too. It would'nt be teh first time in recent memory that William Shatner tried to be 'funny'.

I've been reading alot of the posts that echo your feelings and I know it's hard for some Trek fans to understand this but for many of the Trek actors Star Trek is just another gig to pay the bills.

Brent Spiner has expressed in public an equal amount of hatred for the fans and the franchise as well as getting tired of his character.

Also don't forget that Stewart and Spiner demanded a huge up front fee in the sum of millions to appear on the abortion of the movie it was ST Nemesis.

So, Shatner isn't alone in terms of the Trek former actors that have asked for a kings ransom to return and for people to single him out is unfair.
