Shatner: "I hope that movie bombs"

I still don't understand why people are all of a sudden so convinced he was joking. Just because TrekToday said so? Were they there?

It's not that I *want* him to have been serious, I *expect* it. There is a difference.

There's no reason to think he was serious and a pretty good reason to think he's not: it's classic Shat, fucking with the minds of the fans.

Its not just that Trektoday said so. Im sure you know how Shatner likes to joke. Why would he all of a sudden say something like that. Its obvious he just said it in jest. Why didnt he say "I hope the next STAR TREK film bombs." He "that movie" as if he has no connection or interest in Trek.

As someone who owns all 4 episodes of Shatner's "Invasion: Iowa", I "get it" but he's SO dry sometimes its hard to tell. :)

No, not really.

Why would he all of a sudden say something like that.

Why wouldn't he? He's obviously bitter that he's not in the film. We all know he wanted to be, and now he's not. Why wouldn't he be bitter?

Its obvious he just said it in jest.

I don't think so.

Why didnt he say "I hope the next STAR TREK film bombs." He "that movie" as if he has no connection or interest in Trek.

What difference does it make how he words it? That movie. The next Star Trek film. It's all the same.

I mean, if Shatner's such a great guy, why did a lot of the original cast not like him? They must have had reasons.

They were trying to sell books.

They were spouting off about Shatner long before their books came out, AFAIK.

Are we sure this isn't just tongue-in-cheek? I mean really, as said, he would have to be incredibly bitter, and he doesn't strike me that way. At least, as mentioned, the franchise has been berry berry good to him! Someone looking for a reaction asks him a silly, irrelevant question and he gives him or her something to run with.

IIRC, most of the grousing from Doohan, Nichols, Takei, and Koenig begin after the convention circuit was in full stride in the 70s, and the utterly baseless myth developed that Star Trek was an "ensemble" show. As stated earlier, it came to a boiling point as each of them had a book to sell.

As far as Shatner's statement: it's a joke, and a damn funny one at that given who it's coming from.

Not really. Most of the bellyaching started when the tell-all books were all the rage.

Where they ever *not* the rage? We even have OJ doing a fantasy-or-maybe-not called "If I Did It".

As to Shat, I dunno. I don't think he's serious, but he's been spouting over and over about how he's not in the movie and all that. This is publicity as far as I can tell. And I'll believe he's not in Trek XI when the credits roll.

But I hope they'll make a Boston Legal movie and put him in. I think he's better as a comedic actor than as an action hero.

I'm amazed there's anybody out there who still takes Shatner seriously. Have they not been following his career in the last 20 years?

I doubt he wishes the film any specific harm, just in case he benefits in someway...

Well he does. If you have ever seen any of his interviews over the past 20 years you would know this. A good example: He was once asked about the success of trek.(It was on some Trek anniversary special dont remeber which one) He seriously/arrogantly said to the interviewer he knew they would be making movies one day after the show was cancelled. Shatner than said to the interviewer, something to the effect: "I see you are smiling." "Of course I didnt know we were going to be doing movies"

This is the way Shatner jokes. Sadly many people seem to take him seriously.

There's no indication in the original report that Shatner was joking - in fact, it was reported as a serious remark. So TrekToday's characterization of it as "joking" is apparently just editorializing rather than reporting.

There's no indication that the press 1, can tell a joke from a serious remark or 2, that this answer was not taken out of context.
