Shatner "I don't know how they can do (ST 50th) without me"

Shatner is not Captain Kirk.

Once upon a time, William Shatner played Captain Kirk. Today, William Shatner looks nothing like what James T. Kirk would look like at their age.

Seeing Shatner play Kirk now would NOT be seeing Kirk. Let's be frank; he didn't look the part in Generations, let alone now. It would take one out of the story to see that now, especially as Shatner would ham it up in his awkward pompous fashion. Nicholas Meyer probably got his best performance out of the man in TWOK, and he said he did it in part by tiring Shatner out with multiple takes. I don't doubt it.

The man is ****ing 84-years-old. It's not very easy to keep off weight at that age.

I think he looks fantastic. If I had to make a guess, I'd think he was in his 60s.

I do hope they do some kind of dramatisation like Doctor Who's Adventures in Time and Space. Showing us the early life of Gene, how he came up with Star Trek. The filming of the original series, break up of his marriage, womanising etc. There's a big human interest story to be told there.

I would watch that. Especially if they made an effort to acknowledge the efforts of folks like Gene Coon, Robert Justman, and Herb Solow as well.

Hey writers! Get on that!

I really liked Adventures in Time and Space. David Bradley is an 'honorary' Doctor.

Who would play everybody? Rodenberry? Shatner....?

I think Shatner looks good for his age. Might be able to pull off an appearance around the time of the launch of the E-B.

Maybe he could call up Mark Hamill and ask him a few questions on how he lost all that weight.

Then again, Hamill is twenty years younger.

And the amazing thing is, Shatner looks the same age as him.

Without a doubt, Shatner still has that wonderful voice, which is the one and only voice of James T. Kirk. As far as the look, even during TOS Kirk had a little problem with his weigh, if the intent is to show Kirk as a older man, Shatner is right there.

Shatner is a legend in his own mind. His asking price kept him out before, so he will either have to come down in price or sit it out. Frankly, I still remember him insulting fans in brutal fashion on SNL. I, also, remember his being difficult to work with during my time at fan conventions. For those reasons and others, I don't really care if he's involved in 50th anniversary activities... or not.

From Memory Alpha:

"Get a Life!" sketch

...The scene apparently caused some fans to believe these were his true feeling for Star Trek fans, though he has assured them it was only a sketch. The sketch did, however, inspire the title for his book Get a Life!

In the intro to this edition of SNL, Shatner quipped that he hopes the Trekkies out there have a sense of humor or "I'm in deep trouble!"

Get a life! I thought it was freaking hilarious. My grandma brought me down some english muffin pizzas that night. Things were pretty sweet.

But the most important question left to resolve is:

Did they ever settle the matter of that safe combination???

I think it is important to Shatner that he would get paid, but I suspect he would do it on the cheap.

He turned down the role of "Chef" in "a very special [sweeps week] episode of 'Enterprise'" because of price, a concept they later rejigged for Jonathan Frakes and the finale.
Apparently it was that idea which put him off. Shatner wanted to come back as his Mirror counterpart and tie into his Mirror Universe books.

There will never be another actor like Shatner to play Kirk. Seeing him again would be great, even if it's for a short time like Tom Baker's appearance in 'Day of the Doctor'.

It's not that William Shatner is old and fat; it's that James Kirk would only be old. If Shatner were 40 lbs heavier when he played Kirk, he wouldn't have been a bad man, but he wouldn't have been cast in the part.

Shatner pulled Kirk off then; he can't now. They've "evolved along divergent paths". Which makes his entitled grandstanding all the more annoying, and non-Kirk.

If he really wants to play Kirk, he'd get a fancy Hollywood trainer and dietitian and earn the millions he's BSing about.

Shatner is a legend in his own mind.

The guy's had major successes as an actor in every decade of the last 40-50 years. That's hardly being a legend "in his own mind."

His asking price kept him out before, so he will either have to come down in price or sit it out.

Oh, please share more of your intimate knowledge of Shatner's current asking price and his personal finances with us.

Frankly, I still remember him insulting fans in brutal fashion on SNL.

:wtf: In a freaking comedy sketch. What seems more likely to you: Shatner walking up to the SNL writers and saying, "Hey, let's write something that'll alienate my major fan base, I've always hated those guys" or the SNL writers coming up with what they thought was a funny scene for him to play and Shatner going along with it because he's: A) an actor, and B) a good sport?

I, also, remember his being difficult to work with during my time at fan conventions

...And I think we've found the real reason for your dislike of Shatner.

Folks, like Shatner or not, the simple truth is that if he hadn't done his job so well 50 years ago, this Forum wouldn't exist, because there wouldn't be a show for us to talk about. So cut him some slack, huh?

I'm not, I'm talented and flawless. Everyone loves me, including myself.

Joking aside, I do hope they get Shatner for the 50th. It would be fun, and the man is a blast to watch.
