shatner CAN act!!!

of course he can act..
watch balance of terror and doomsday machine.
and he could still act well in the third season if the material was decent.. empath for instance.

as for best well you almost have to break it down to years.
stewart took awhile to get a feel for picard and in some of the later years just like shatner if he didnt have good material he went over into caricature.

Different strokes for different folks. I think Kate Mulgrew was the best thespian to fill the captain's shoes. The women could believably play the full range of emotions.

Sure Brooks could go over the top but Shatner did too (KHAANNN!) but there were many scenes in DS9 which Brooks' portrayal really moved me more than I had ever experienced with Shatner's Kirk. Like Shatner when Brooks hit the notes right, he really hit them out of the ballpark. Since I like the character of Captain Benjamin Sisko so much more than I like Captains James T. Kirk, I can't help but give Avery Brooks a slightly higher ranking, but it's just my own personal ranking of course and amounts to nothing as far as anyone else here is concerned. ;)

For the TOS, I really think Nimoy came across as one of the most skilled actors on the show, but he had the benefit of a very unique and challenging character to play while Shatner's character was more run-of-the-mill 1960s swaggering male lead role. Thus, I'm not sure if that's a real fair way to compare their skills, but this is an awfully subjective matter as it is anyway.

Oh yes, DS9 is probably my favorite Star Trek series over all with TOS coming in a very close second. Both are wonderful shows and I can never get enough of them. :)

I agree. While I didn't care for much of Voyager's run I thought that she was the best actor in the captain's chair of all the 4 TNG+ captains.

Stewart's ten times the actor Shatner is.

Blech. The guy is extremely limited. He can't emote and he can't do comedy.

I agree. Patrick Stewart is very good at stuff like Shakespeare and could run circles around the rest of them in that particular arena....but anything that involves emotions is just not convincing. And comedy lives on a different planet than does Patrick Stewart.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to be more of a specialist at heart. There have been plenty of top notch actors over the years that were very good a certain things...but limited when they were outside their area of excellence.

I personally think Laurence Olivier was this way - extremely talented at what he did best...but when he got into areas outside that, often did not work out nearly as well.

Patrick Stewart is a great actor...but IMO his talents do not lie in the areas of emotions and comedy.

I think Shatner is better suited for Star Trek because he is much more of a generalist. And is very good a comedy. In fact, I'd say he was better than any of us knew, until Boston Legal came out.

Not sure what you mean, but I think he got better with Boston Legal. In fact, I prefer Denny Craig to Captain Kirk. Denny has allowed Shatner to show his acting chops, and the reward has been to Emmys (and maybe even a third) for his efforts.

I never once thought The Shat couldn't act. I have also never once compared kirky to Picard or any other captain. For some reason it never occured to me to do so.
Now that i try to, i find that i can't. It just doesn't feel right.
I think perhaps i'll try to catch an episode of Boston Legal.

Just to clarify, I think Shatner is positively BRILLIANT on Boston Legal.

Shatner and Spader are the whole show, IMO, and deserve every award they have won.

Personally, I think Boston Legal was the best thing to ever happen to Shatner since Star Trek. Even the biggest Doubting Thomas in Trek fandom cannot deny that Shatner ROCKS on that show.

There are some who hate Mr. Shatner they are envious of his fame. And are absolutely angered that he made it big, super big, where as their favorites (Nichole-takie-Doohan) all will have astericks next to their names...like this.

WALTER KOENIG*
NICHELLE NICHOLS*
GEORGE TAKEI*
JAMES DOOHAN*

*these performers were all secondary characters on STAR TREK, starrring WILLIAM SHATNER
