Shat out / Nimoy in?

Oh, that's nonsense. Until I hear something definitive from JJ Abrams, I'll take all this fanspec with a grain of Salt Monster Salt.

Its hardly speculation. Its out of the man's own mouth.

He said that Nimoy had a part in the movie and he did not. He may be joking, but that's still what he said.

A bit sad, if true, but not the tragedy that some will play this as.

I still have to wonder how "in the loop" he is on all of this, and if this is all just more contract-jockeying.

That said, my breakfast rises a little at a thread titled "Shat out..."

In regards to this idea of Nimoy playing Sarek, assuming this movie is set pre-TOS or during TOS (as all rumours indicate one of those) wouldn't he be too old to be Sarek? The guy is older than Mark Lenard was in the 1960s, and looks it. I don't see him being Sarek. Unless they're going to show that a Vulcan around 100 will look more aged than we've previously seen.

Lenard was actually a year or two younger than Nimoy, and by the time that ST III was being made Nimoy was concerned that he looked "more like my brother than my father." Lenard therefore underwent at least some subtle shading and hair coloring in order to age him for the TOS-based movies.

They're recasting the whole thing, so they can pretty much cast Sarek as appearing to be any age they like as long as it's credibly older than the guy playing Spock.

That said, I'm betting on Spock-in-flashback rather than Sarek.

Well, then I guess he ain't got no part in the new movie. It's outta my hands, right or wrong. It's Paramount's property. They can do with it whatever they want, and they will.

Shatner as Kirk in front of the cameras... sorry, I don't want to see it. I also don't want to see anything that makes it "canon" that Kirk wasn't resurrected (by the Borg or whomever). Leave all that to the individual fan's interpretation.

Shatner as a "voice of Kirk" narration... a possibility. But I'm guessing that this was not the writer's first choice, because I think it will be a BETTER STORY if it's Spock (aka Nimoy) who is narrating.

We're gonna have Kirk. It will be a preteen kid, a late teen guy, and another version in his mid/late 20s. With three different actors. Each of which will resemble Shatner's TOS Kirk closely enough that we'll be able to believe that it's the same character. But... it will NOT be Shatner.

We'll also have someone besides Nimoy playing Spock. This will be even more challenging, since we'll have Nimoy's Spock right there in the movie for direct comparison (meaning that any moviegoer, not just the Trek fanbase, will notice any "casting discrepancies")

We may have any of several other characters. I want to meet the pre-Starfleet McCoy but couldn't care less about any of the "second bananas" honestly, unless they fill some crucial purpose in telling the story of "how 12-year-old Jimmy Kirk became Captain James T. Kirk." The best choices, IMHO, are Gary Mitchell (Kirk's best friend and a likely source of "fun factor" in an otherwise potentially very serious movie), Ben Finney (Kirk's mentor and "father figure" after the death of George Samuel Kirk), and Carol Marcus (the little blonde lab tech Mitchell steered Kirk towards to get him to lighten up... and the eventual mother of Kirk's child). These characters should be presented in a way that people who've never heard of them will still "get." Nobody should need to know that Gary Mitchell becomes a "mad God" or that eventually Ben Finney's career is ruined when Kirk reports a major screw-up he makes, or that Carol is going to be David Marcus's mother and Kirk's "lost love."

Just give us characters who are well-written and serve a role in the storytelling.

I'm betting this movie opens with Spock retrieving Kirk's body... though I'm sure it will diverge from the "Shatnerverse" beyond that.

What i have heard is that Nimoy is DEFINITELY in the next Trek movie as Spock and that he likely narrates the beginning and end of the movie which will be told in bookend format. This would definitely make sense.Abrams said many times that he's making a movie for old and new Trek fans alike and that he thought both groups would get something from the movie.

Now that it's confirmed Nimoy's Spock is in the movie, i CANNOT WAIT.

http://movies.ign.com/articles/802/802672p1.html

That pretty much confirms it.The news straight from Nimoy to Shatner and from Shatner to the interviewer.

I'm taking ALL of this with a grain of salt.

Paramount obviously wants to keep public interest in this movie before it comes out. Dangling this "Who's in the movie?" rumor certainly does the trick until the actual shooting starts. I don't believe that Shatner or Nimoy are to be the main focus of the story...that's why they're supposed to be recasting the roles. So if they're not the main actors then Paramount obviously wants to keep expenses down on Shatner and/or Nimoy's salaries if they decide to offer them parts in the movie. It'll probably boil down to whether or not they want to be in it enough to accept those lesser salaries. That's where I see the bottom line at. Kirk's death in Generations can easily be solved as fast as Spock's was in The Search for Spock. Until they reach that point of making a deal and signing contacts, any publicity generated by the guessing games will be to Paramount's advantage for the movie.

I find this bit interesting:
he said "I have read the script." I said "Is it a good script?" and he said "ya."

If Nimoy likes the script, then I feel more confident about this film.

So, if Spock is going to be narrating the movie at Kirk's grave (okay, we haven't established this, but it could happen), then who is he telling the tale to? Improbable, but maybe they'll also rope in one of the TNG crew for him to direct it to.

Hell, you could throw in a T'pol or Archer cameo at the launch of the NCC-1701 and cover all 3 centuries of Trek/ lore/ Enterprise crews! Fanboy-ish as hell, but why not?!

Because its fanboy-ish as hell?

Shoehorning in cameos for the old cast is just going to 1. distract from the story they're telling and 2. remind everyone who recognizes them of the past failures and disappointments of the franchise.

A 'fresh start' approach doesn't have to reset and ignore 'canon' but they should avoid bring our attention to it as much as possible. Let the movie stand on its own two feet.

Amen to that! A short cameo by Nimoy and/or Shatner is the most we want to squeeze into this. Even that's stretching it, if we want to new cast to have breathing room.

The NG movies had their shot. RIP

I've been reading the responses on this board and also another Trek board, and I have to be honest; in some ways, it's a bit embarrassing to be a Trek fan right now.

I say that for one reason: I've read a lot of complaining from some fans who are so disappointed that (according to this story, whether true or not) Shatner will not be in the next Trek film. For that reason alone, these fans are now not only no longer interested in the film, but are also hoping that it bombs more than NEM did! How can you be a fan of a franchise if you want it to fail? I really just don't get it. Maybe there's something in the fan handbook that I've missed, but I thought fans would hope that something would succeed, even if they don't entirely like it so that there can be more! Am I not right about that? If Trek XI fails, it'll be years before we get another Trek incarnation, if ever!

I'm just really a bit disappointed in some of what I've read, but thankfully this board has mostly been clear. You should check out trekweb.com because I was disgusted by what I saw there! This film could be the best Trek film ever, and there's part of the fanbase that is already disowning because one man is not appearing in it. And this is based upon something is really just a rumor right now!

For me, I'm trying to see the good in this story over the bad. Shatner's not appearing? Okay. It would have been nice, but it's not necessary. But, look at what's been said about Nimoy. Not only is he appearing, but he says that the script is good! That right there is very comforting! Think about it. Nimoy was offered the chance to appear in and direct GEN a couple years after TUC. He turned it down because he didn't like the script, and wouldn't be given the power to make changes. Nimoy has basically retired from Hollywood life, but is agreeing to "come out of retirement" for this one project, even if it's small. He says the script is good. So doesn't that mean that it's good enough to prompt him to do that? Nimoy's not just looking for a paycheck. He wants to make something that is quality or that he can feel good about. If he feels good about doing Trek XI, that right there says a lot for me. He directed Star Trek III and IV and helped craft the stories for both IV & VI. That says something there about the quality work he can bring to the Trek universe.

I wish all Trek fans would be able to look at this story and say, "Ah well, Shat isn't appearing, but Nimoy is and look, he says it's a good script, yiay!" and be excited about this film! Cuz guess what? I am!

And because of that, I'm also happy to be a Trek fan, because Christmas next year is gonna be great!

I agree. when I heard that Nimoy liked it I knew we are going to get something special and good!
