I imagine many women are given medications during childbirth to ease the pain, so the "apparition" could be attributed to hallucinationatory side effects.

Some 25 years ago when I was a college student I went with a friend to a cheap pizza place near my apartment. We ordered our pizzas and a beer each and seated ourselves. I'm usually fairly placid, so when I was restless to the point of not being able to sit still, my friend commented on it. I tried to calm down but couldn't, just got this vague anxious feeling of wanting to be somewhere, anywhere else. In between sips I got up and started pacing around. We had just finished our beers when they brought us the pizzas, but then I said why don't we take them to my place instead. This meant losing the takeout discount, but I didn't care. After eating we had planned to go there anyway to watch a movie (this was the early 1990s so movie rental was still a thing people did). My friend looked at me like I was crazy but agreed. I don't remember much about the actual visit or the movie we watched, but after she left I watched the late news and learned that less than an hour after we left the restaurant, someone walked in with a sawn-off shotgun and shot the place to pieces. Luckily nobody was hurt, the place was empty at the time and the immigrant owner managed to escape to the storeroom or something. But if we had followed our original plans, we would most probably have been there when the shooter walked in. To be fair, it's entirely possible the shooter would just have turned on his heels and come back another day when the place was empty.

I shared a house with some students around the turn of the century. A Victorian terrace with many original features and bare varnished floor boards. One afternoon I’d left work early and returned to a cold empty house. Nature called and I took to the throne room with a coffee, rolling tobacco and The Otherside of Summer, if I remember correctly.

Some time in to the motion I heard the front door slam closed and foot falls up the stairs; outside the bathroom door I heard feet on the landing, floor boards creaked and physically dipped under the weight of someone on the otheside of the door.

‘Out in a mo’ I told them, though there was no reply, but I heard heavy breathing. I was finished any way, so sorted myself out, all the while, the impatient house mate paced outside on the landing, waiting for the only toilet in the house.

When I opened the door however, the landing was empty, the house empty, I checked the bedrooms, all empty.

No one down stairs either. A little perturbed, I made another coffee and rolled another smoke, but as I lit it, I heard the bathroom door slam shut upstairs. The bathroom door, as it hung on it’s hinges, naturally swung open, it couldn’t close by itself, but when i went upstairs, the door was closed and the bathroom empty.

That was a creepy house. Always cold, more than the lack of carpets would account for, and there was always a strange reflection in the tv screen of the doorway, and a figure stood in it, even when there wasn’t. We never had the TV off because of it, the reflection was less noticeable when it was on. Had some pretty horrendous dreams there that I still recall 17 years later.

Never actually saw anything though.

The pizza place story above reminded me of something. Back when I was a teen, we went to visit my uncle in California. We took a day-trip down to San Francisco. We were waiting in line for the helicopter tour over the bay, out around Alcatraz and whatnot. When they told us how long the wait was (twenty minutes or so), Dad suddenly decided he was hungry. We jumped out of line to go find fish & chips, and the people in line behind thanked us for letting them move up their schedule.

Later, we get back to my uncles house, turn on the TV, and the news is talking about a helicopter crash. No one died or was even seriously hurt. They interviewed one of the passengers. Yes, it was the husband/dad of the family of four who took our turn on the tour. If Dad's stomach hadn't decided it was time to go, that would have been us they pulled out of the water.

Could it be that someone might have been in the house at the time, and then left? Or they could be playing a prank on you. You also indicated you were smoking weed, so it might have been a hallicinatory experience.

Not weed, just regular hand rolling tobacco, most likely golden viginia. The house was certainly empty, I checked all the rooms, and no one was due to back from their work/campus for three to four hours, and they weren’t the type to hide giggling under the bed.

I was convinced that someone was waiting to use the bathroom, until I checked and found the house empty, and it’s one of the few weirdnesses I’ve not be able to rationalise away. It wasn’t neighbours, I hadn’t fallen asleep, That’s not to say “ghost”, but it was certainly weird.

Me and my mate were driving home from visiting our other mate in Tarbrax along the A70, and we saw this big, glowing pillar type thing in a field, about the size of an office block. At that point, our car stopped and we felt naturally curious as to what it was as we'd never seen anything like that. My mate said "Maybe it's a spaceship", but I laughed it off as I thought there was no such thing as a UFO. We walked up to it, and as we got near suddenly all different colors began shooting down the side of it, and a door opened and out stepped this tall fella, who had a mask.

He said that he knew we were weary travelers, and he offered us this flask of something that he said would "revive us". We were indeed tired, and cold, so we took it off him and took a swig each, and it was incredible. It was the best thing I've ever tasted sort of like a REALLY good Jack and coke, and so I took another swig and then I blacked out. Next thing I remember, I woke up and it was morning, and I was in a field hugging a traffic cone while dressed in fetish gear. I had a ton of missed calls from my wife, who was frantic wondering where I was.

Never was quite sure about this experience, although I wish those aliens had left me with the recipe as their drink was awesome. Or I could have just gotten really, really drunk and my recall is somewhat fictionalized.

Okay, folks. This is just waaaayyyyy too eerie. Just moments ago, I was thinking of a former Glee cast member who got into trouble for possession of child pornography. So I Googled "Glee cast" which turned up results for Grant Gustin, Corey Monteith, etc. Then I remembered the actor's name, Mark Salling.

If you didn't already know, he died of an apparent suicide.

WTF? This isn't the first time I've thought of a random celebrity, only to hear of that person dying within hours. I'm a freakin' HERALD OF DEATH!!! I swear I'm not making this up.

Camping trip, at the end of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It’s the second week of September, after everyone has gone back to work and school. The campground is deserted except for my camper. Just my man, my dog, and myself. The day is winding to an end, I’m getting the camper and myself ready for the night, and he goes out to take a walk and smoke. About 15 minutes later the door flies open and he bursts into the trailer. He’s actually white as a sheet, and I can see he’s nervous. This is a man who is unflappable so it’s obvious there’s something wrong. He refuses to tell me, first saying I wouldn’t believe him, then saying I would laugh at him. Finally I convince him and he tells the story. He walked down the trail a ways and stopped to zip up his jacket. It was windy and the temperature had dropped when the sun went down. He looked back and he said there was a woman on the trail a few yards back. Wild black hair, and a white negligee blowing in the wind. He thought we were alone in the campground, and he wondered if she weren’t cold dressed like that. He just turned and continued his walk. He got to a bend in the road and glanced back and there she was, still the same distance back, not moving, and staring at him. Kind of creepy, so he walked on, faster. He paused again further on and looked back. There she was, just standing there in the cold, hair and gown blowing. He practically sprinted back to the camper. Being the caring, sensitive creature that I am, I naturally laughed and proceeded to taunt him and make WooWooowoooOOOooo ghost noises! I told him she followed and she was right outside! I told him she was standing there staring at the trailer waiting for him and if I open the curtains she will be RIGHT THERE.

And then I opened the curtains and looked.

And there she was. Wild black hair blowing around her head, and wearing a white peignoir set. She was standing, back slightly arched, arms back chest forward, like a figurehead on the prow of a ship. And she just stood there staring.

That night I moved the dog bed across the doorway and we slept with knives under our pillows. It was the only night we ever locked the trailer door. The rangers confirmed that we were the only people in the campground. There were no houses nearby. We moved the next morning.

Decades ago, my then-husband worked in an historic building that sort of appeared to be haunted by the person who had once lived and died on the top floor. Occasionally, when he was there alone at night, he would hear footsteps of someone going up the main staircase. When he finally counted the footsteps, it was exactly the number of steps from the basement to the top (fourth?) floor. We laughed about it, but he didn’t take it at all seriously until...

One night, he and a coworker were both there late and were leaving together. They’d each gone through the same routine many times before: check the left hand door to make sure it was locked, turn the alarm system on, exit the right hand door (about 20 feet away from the left one) within two minutes, and make sure you heard the door click closed behind you. The night in question, they did all that. And then, after the right door clicked, they saw the left hand door slowly swing open and then close again. With no one there, and without triggering the alarm. The coworker looked at my husband and said, “We didn’t see that.” They never mentioned it again, and Mr. Tora didn’t work up the courage to tell me until a couple years later.

I work in a grocery store. Several years ago, there was some extra work that needed to be done and as a result, me and my manager ended up working a holiday when the store was closed. We were the only two in the store all day, and yet we could hear the sound of someone whistling along with the songs playing over the store's PA system. Fast forward just last year, I had to spend a few weeks on the overnight shift, and on the nights when I was on my own, once again, I could hear someone whistling along with the PA music. I'm not sure I want to say "ghost" as I really don't believe in them and indeed, the store's fairly new having only been built in the past decade, so there's no history suggesting hauntings, but it's definitely weird.

Otherwise, there's my grandparents house. My grandparents lived about a six hour drive away, so when my family visited, it was usually a visit of a few days or even a week, meaning we stayed at the house, and that house was just creepy. There's no ghost story here, I never saw or heard anything that would be classified as paranormal or unexplainable. The house just irrationally creeped me the fuck out for no real reason at all. After my grandfather died, my grandmother sold the house, and all my cousins and even my sister were going on about how the house had character and that if they had the money/or it was practical for them to move there they would have bought it themselves, but me, I'm just glad I'll never have to go there again.

Apart from precognition, deja vu, and my dating history that I regret 98% of, my life is as boring as a soufflé made exclusively from dihydrogen oxide...

Did you try to confront this apparition (or person)? Since you and your partner were both witnesses to this figure, you couldn't have just imagined the whole thing. (And I've never heard of people having shared hallucinations.)

ETA: My original point was, who's to say the Dark Haired Woman was a supernatural phenomenon? Someone could have been playing a prank, or that woman in question could be Alanis Morrisette or that girl from Evanescence.

Yes, but it's so much more fun to be frightened!

I was working late one night and was the only person on the floor. the floor was dived into two wings, east and west. I was in the east wing. Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something move. I heard nothing. I chalked it up to my eyes playing tricks on me but I still wonder to this day because there have been reports of hauntings and unexplained noises in that building. One of my employees at that time, working there alone on a Sunday heard what sounded like someone on the floor above moving furniture around. According to security, there should have been no one on that floor.

I'm definitely a skeptic and will likely remain so until something happens to me that I truly can't explain away.

This was told to me by my sister.
My grandfather died a couple of months before my nephew was born. My sister never told him she was pregnant. She wasn't married at the time and didn't want to upset my grandfather because he was so sick. My grandfather was a great guy but traditional when it came to relationships. Flash forward to a couple years later. My nephew wakes up, walks downstairs, into the living room where his mother was sitting and climbs into her lap. He looks over at a picture of my grandfather and tells his mom, "mommy, who is that man?" My sister replies that it was his great grandfather. He looks again at the picture and says, "He came to me in my dream and talked to me"

Now, I realize there are possible explanations for this but it still send a chill down my spine when I think about it.

I have two stories, but not unexplainable, perfectly explainable, but they're the most creepy experiences I had.

First is a camping trip at the beach which involved Magic Mushrooms. We all took Magic Mushrooms at night and for me, they simply didn't kick in, everyone was enjoying tripping and then eventually, they all went to bed. I stayed away sitting at the fire. Suddenly after about 4-5 hours after taking them, I notice the logs and sticks in the fire start slithering around themselves like snakes and I'm like "welp, here it comes I guess" and then because it was a new moon meaning, it was pitch black and the only light I had was fire, I couldn't really focus on anything and suddenly started feeling like, I was jumping through time by 5-10 minutes at a time, for example, at one part, I needed to go back to the toilet, so now I do remember, I did go to the toilet, came back and sat down, but after about a minute of getting back, my memory of going to the toilet was "Did I go to the toilet or did I just crap my pants?", then suddenly a flash, I've gone from sitting at the fire, to sitting the car listening to music, then flash, I'm back to the camp fire. After sobering up I remember everything, going to the toilet, then going to the fire, then going to the car, then going to bed, but at the time, my short term memory was basically fried so It felt like, I was jumping through time and I started freaking out, because we're at the beach, and what happens, if I suddenly "leap" through time and I've 1km out in the ocean. At that point I made the right decision to go to bed but until I fell asleep, I was seriously creeped out by the entire experience.

It's perfectly explainable though:
Studies have demonstrated that psilocin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms, significantly impairs subjects' ability to gauge time intervals longer than 2.5 seconds, impairs their ability to synchronize to inter-beat intervals longer than 2 seconds, and reduces their "preferred" tapping rate.[1][2] These results are consistent with the drug's role in affecting prefrontal cortex activity, and the role that the prefrontal cortex is known to play in time perception

The second story, Sleep Paralysis.
"Woke up" one night in bed and I noticed I couldn't move, but in my room clear as day I could hear chanting "RA TO MA GA TO MO GA" in an incredibly deep voice. I was on my side as well facing the wall, but I could see green lights reflecting off my wall. Eventually I'm able to get on my back and look towards my door and I see a hooded figure chanting, while green swirling fire balls fly around my room. I realise, "Holy shit I'm going to be killed by a fucking wizard", but I can't move my body at all no matter how hard I try. Eventually through moving my toes, I can move my legs and my body suddenly frees up and I LEAP out of my goddamn bed with my fist heading to his goddamn face and then suddenly I realise I'm standing in my room, fist extended, but nothing is where my fist, where if he was there, I would have knocked him the hell out.

This sort of story is common with Sleep Paralysis, in fact when I posted it to facebook, I had other people who suffered from Sleep Paralysis say they had the exact same sort of vision, hooded figure, chanting, coloured balls swirling around room.

Sleep Paralysis is also blamed a lot of "UFO abduction" stories and with this Sleep Paralysis (and other Sleep Paralysis) experiences I've had, I believe it. (Had the feeling of falling through a shaft of light and also being sucked through a shaft of light during Sleep Paralysis)

Also read Sleep Paralysis is actually sort of "contagious" in that basically people get Sleep Paralysis often after hearing about Sleep Paralysis and that was 100% the case for me, heard about it from a close friend and that very night had my first Sleep Paralysis experience.
