Shanks on SGU Fan Respose

Broccoli

Vice Admiral
Admiral
From GateWorld:

Many fans of SG-1 and Atlantis have already made up their minds about whether or not they will give SGU a chance. Shanks suggests that we reserve judgment and risk a couple of hours on the pilot.

“I think the most important thing is watch the show,” he said. “Judge from what you see. I didn’t think much about it until I watched the trailer that they had done for the pilot and I went ‘Wow! This looks cool!’ And I know from interacting with that cast, they’ve got a great group there. They have some amazing actors led by the profoundly amazing Robert Carlyle, who I couldn’t say enough about. I think it’s worth a look. I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised.”
I think he hits the nail on the nose. Watch the thing before passing judgment which, not necessarily here, I've noticed in other SG circles on the Internet. It makes logical sense on, well, really anything.

It's the same tied writing team trying to do something different and no one has faith in them anymore.

He didn't think much of it until he saw the trailer?

Michael's in it.

He's made hundreds of episodes and a few movies with these people but he can't extrapolate quality until he sees a 3 minute trailer full of the best bits designed to convert non believers with cheap tricks and spectacle?

I assume Michael doesn't realize that a lot of the negative response comes from fans upset that TPTB canceled Atlantis for Universe.

Don't get me wrong, I've really warmed up to Universe, and am really looking forward to it now after seeing the trailers; but I just can't let go of the knowledge that they canned one show for the other.

I think he meant, that he didn't have an opinion about it when he heard about SGU.

He's right. There's no substitute for actually watching the show.

Then again, he's also going to be a guest star, right? That's a vested interest in having people watch the show right there.

bzzzzzzzt. wrong.

Umm... nope...

Same peopel in charge of the show, they hired 2 writers that might write 3 episodes a year... wow....

Just like Manny Coto, he tried his best to save Enterprise, but in the end it still sucked because he didn't have full control.

Manny Coto had about as much control as Berman and Braga towards the end.

Caprica surprised me with how good it was overall so I hope SGU can do the same.

I'll give em the same chance I give any sci fi show: 15 minutes and then I check how I'm reacting. If it's "boredom" or worse (nausea, contempt, rage that this crap got the greenlight when good shows get cancelled, etc), I'm gone.

Any competent TV writing/producing team should be able to come up with something in the first 15 minutes that won't annoy me, and give me some slight inkling that the show and the characters have potential. If they can't do that, they don't deserve my attention.

Picky picky. Ok, "no one who knows what good writing looks like has faith in them anymore."

But I don't need faith to give a show 15 minutes. Prove me wrong, suckahs. Oh who am I kidding, I'll watch the show just because there aren't any other space operas out there. Just don't be painful to endure like Defying Gravity, and I'll most likely stick with it. High standards fall under the crushing tsunami of total desperation...

Ah, excellent. This of course means that we'll continue to have pages and pages of arrogant drivel to read on this board for months to come. :techman:

I was bored 15 minutes in to Lost's pilot. Should I have turned that off ?

Watch a show before judging it?

Wow, what a bizarre concept. The phrase No shit, Sherlock springs to mind

Obviously people are going to pre-judge the show before it airs. This is the internet, it's what we do.

That being said, while I would not say I excited about SGU, I am looking forward to it with interest. While I do not agree that some of the things they are doing are necesarily the right things to be doing, I am willing to give things the benfit of the doubt. After all, Stargate even at its worse is still better than 90% of what else is on television and what's considered popular.

Really bigdaddy, no one has faith in them anymore? Not the studio that is paying them to do it? Not the cast and crew that depend on them for a paycheck? Not the fans of the previous Stargate shows that willing to give it a chance before they decided if they like it or don't like it?

I'm glad you're the mouthpiece for the rest of the world, because without you I wouldn't know that I was supposed to hate the show before it airs.

What are your opinions on the 2017 Honda Accord?
