Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings: The Rising and Advancing of the Spirit

my dissatisfaction with films like Captain America Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy
H3BxWaW.gif

It always amazes how different people's tastes are, I absolutely loved both of those. They're right at the very top of the MCU and possibly even all movies in general for me.
As someone who loves Doctor Strange more than most, I'm more than willing to admit that it follows the MCU formula pretty closely, especially parallel to Iron Man.

But that's thing: So what if it's following the formula as long as you enjoy the way that formula is executed with different trappings?
That's pretty much how I feel about Dr. Strange, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I'm more than able to recognize their similarities to earlier movies in their series, but for me there are enough differences that I'm not bothered by it.

@JD I didn't like Civil War because Cap got overshadowed by Tony and Tom Holland's Peter Parker (and I didn't like how the latter character was introduced), and Guardians was just "second-rate Star Wars".

New featurette with Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Meng'er Zhang talking about their respective characters with lots of new footage:

^ That was a fun little featurette.

The more I see of this film through promos and marketing, the more excited I get, which hasn't been the case with an MCU movie for a while.

:)

I'm not sure what you're referring to? Are you thinking that Liu will be out because he posted that. He's not really picking a fight with Disney, just voicing his confidence in the film. Or are you thinking that Disney using this film as a data point will not go well because you're expecting the film to underperform?

Liu appears at best to be trying to fire up excitement for the release of his major tent pole film, but he absolutely is factually wrong.

For Disney this is an experiment, this is their first tent pole release that is exclusive to theaters for a 45 day window since the start of the pandemic. The others have been same day streaming release. And Disney is very interested in trying to figure out which during a pandemic will allow them a larger boost to their bottom line. It isn't anything specific to this film, its cast, its subject matter. The release pattern (both date, and how it would be available) was made before the Delta Variant become so prevalent. Disney and many in Hollywood, had assumed that greater numbers would be vaccinated and that infections would be far lower than what they have since become.

There have been rumblings that they are are two very vocal groups inside Disney, one pushing for more same day release patterns, and some wanting to be closer to the what we consider a more standard release pattern.

The first group is looking at long term growth and money raised through stock buyers impressions on how the long term viability of Disney + is performing. The 2nd being a group, that is more concerned with actual current earned revenue.

This movie is the first test for Disney on getting a tentpole that isn't a same day release. Thus it is absolutely an experiment for the studio and how they will choose what pattern best works for the studio certainly in the short term, possible a much longer.

Depending on how this release fares. The studio might change the release structure for their latter films, if it seriously is really poor they might start reshuffling their release dates for their planned out films.

I'm a huge fan of the series Kim's Convenience
I’m a big fan of Kim’s Convenience as well. I just found out that Simu Liu was the star of Shang-Chi, a character I know nothing about, so now I’m all in. Also doesn’t hurt that Michelle Yeoh and Awkawafina are in it too.

Looking forward to the movie.

On the subject of the release conversation, there is absolutely no way I'm going to a theater any time soon. I will be passing on both Shang-Chi and Eternals (assuming it is also released in theaters only) because I don't feel comfortable being in a crowded theater with others during Covid surge. I'm fully vaccinated, but I'm choosing this path for myself and everybody is free to choose for themselves. But I'm sure I won't be the only one taking this road.

Disney got my money for Premiere Access for Black Widow no questions asked. I would gladly do the same for these next few releases what with Covid and it's variants on the rise yet again. Simu Liu can hate me if he wants, but a theatrical only release means no dollars from me. So I hope this is an experiment for Disney, and I hope that it's the kind that results in more same day streaming releases. At least during the pandemic. Though, truth be told, if I never had to go to a movie theater again I wouldn't complain. I loathe the theater experience, I only go because I prefer not to wait/be spoiled on movies I want to see.

I thought Civil War was great, and Guardians was poor man's Farscape. Self-indulgent unfunny schlock that couldn't hold my attention.

Agreed about Guardians (and its sequel).

I think it's ridiculous how people say that Tony overshadowed Peter in a movie in which he only appeared in eight minutes.

DigificWriter did not say Tony overshadowed Peter. He said:

Getting a little bit tired of the marketing machinery - can't open Youtube or any entertainment/nerd related website without a new clip or article about Shang Chi.

@TREK_GOD_1 is right. My issue with Civil War is the same issue I have with Spider-Man Homecoming: the titular character of those movies gets overshadowed by a different character.

In CW, Steve gets overshadowed by both Peter and Tony, and in SMH Peter gets overshadowed himself by Tony (the amount of screen time that RDJ gets is irrelevant, because the reason he overshadows Tom Holland is based on the narrative decision to make the story about Peter not having any worth as a superhero without Tony giving him his approval and support).

I feel like Peter doesn't entirely get his due in Spider-Man Far from Home either, although he gets far more of an opportunity to actually carry the movie than he did in Homecoming, and what he does get to do is strong enough to mitigate the more overwhelming presence in the film of Happy, Nick Fury, and Mysterio.

I loved the Sony Spider-Man movies. Some were better that others, but these movies were about my life-long hero.

What I don't like at all about his treatment in the MCU is that he's become just another guy in a Stark-Tech suit. So, yeah, Stark overshadows, because Peter becomes his tool.

Just how I felt about it.

Except he's not just another guy in a Stark tech suit. That was the whole point of his defeating Vulture in his homemade suit.
