SGU Review: First Impressions

Oh, and by the way, there's going to be music in this show. Real music. Not just scored stuff, but actual songs. It's a game changer when it comes to setting just the right tone at just the right moment. And the musical score is simply amazing.

I like the sound of this personally

This was posted in another thread, IIRC, but it is promising. Which is what I need to hear, since the five-minute clip wasn't.

I'm worried the show may be another retarded BSG, but the first review kept my interest. I'll probably tune in for the pilot and see where it goes.

This is a hard maneuver to pull off. Trek offers an example; even the mildly darker elements of DS9 bothered some fans, who complained it didn't feel like ST. And to be honest, even I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around a Stargate series without wisecracky military types. Having said that, I wish them well.

I will say my respect for this show just shot up because of this. Yeah, it potentially dates the show and makes it so that only English speaking audiences can appreciate the music, but I don't mind it - it worked well in the SG1 finale.

Not only SG-1's finale, but SGA's Vegas as well.

Yeah, but using contemporary music in a "real world" context isn't really risky.

Heck, I still remember the stink people had with A Knight's Tale having a "real" soundtrack.

The poor guy sounds like he's never watched a drama before.

"omg there was acting! and music! and it was dark, man. like, darker than TNG even."

Drama? yuk, i want action scifi. They canceled Atlantis for a dang Drama?

The canceled Atlantis because it sucked, the acting was bad, the storylines were worse, and the show had no real since of direction or purpose and had for years.

Well, let's be fair. They would have cancelled it years before if it were for those reasons! :p

It was cancelled because of decling ratings and rising costs.

This review has turned me off like you wouldn't believe. Maybe I'll give it a chance down the road but I suspect it will be more of a mooch-off-my-friends show like Heroes, The Sarah Jane Adventures, or the last couple seasons of Battlestar Galactica rather than a gotta-see-it-now-at-any-cost show like Stargate Atlantis, Dollhouse, Doctor Who, Torchwood, or the early seasons of Battlestar Galactica.
