SGU CANCELLED!

It used to say Spring 2011 on their SGU page, but they removed that a while ago around the same time they announced a February marathon. Last season the back 10 episodes aired in April, but with the non-renewal and what they did with Caprica, when they'll air them this year is anyone's guess.

You know, maybe I'm a Stargate extremist but I like to pretend that no episodes exist past Lost City on season 7. I've been watching Stargate since I was a kid and, in my opinion at least, nearly every episode past that has been cringe worthy. I hope that things quiet down a bit on the SG front and in a few years we get a fresh, new interpretation of the series.

I end it with Full Circle, because season seven was pretty cringe worthy.

However what does this have to do with SGU being canceled?

^ So are they going to start showing them March 7th, or are they going to do what they did with Caprica, and show it all in one afternoon/ evening, and if you're not around then you're S.O.L.?

They're airing them week by week, not all in one go.

Blasphemy. I thought season 7 was the best of the series, if not franchise...
You an' me both.
I hope so, because I just finished Season 4 on Netflix, and while it's gotten better each year, so far Season 7 isn't going to have to do much to win my "best season" award.

Not strikin' your fancy all that much, eh? I can see why a Trek fan going into the series could take that stance. Of course, I don't presume to know a thing about you or anything. I just mean, a lot of SG-1's plots clearly stem from stuff Trek did and often did better.

I think SG-1 at its best, firing on all cylinders, is SG-1 taking advantage of its more unique assets. The camaraderie between the team is often very good. The humor (especially in later seasons, IMO, although I know many franchise fans who would disagree) is often spot-on. The sense of wonder through mythological and archaeological means is fun for folks like me who are into stuff like that. It's even got one of the most terrific sci-fi props ever -- the gate itself.

But then again, it's a hokey, hokey universe filled with glowing-eyed, one-dimensional menaces, cheap thrills, an increase on the action in the term action/adventure and a whole bunch of premises you've seen before on starships far and wide.

There are a lot of fans who would say seasons four through six are the golden years. I mean, there are a lot of fans who would say anything you can imagine -- it's just like Trek in that regard -- but the four-through-six thing is something I've seen time and again on GateWorld. If you aren't all that hot on the show in season four, it might not be the ultimate cup of joe for you, so I'm hoping the improvements you've cited are enough to keep you going.

Personally, I stand by the season seven statement. Who knows, maybe you will too? ;)

I'm late to the party, but Ifollowed SGU on Hulu before I went to basic training in the military.Having seen the later episodes,i ve concluded that the reason SGU didn't take was that it didn't have a core purpose.BSG had a direction and purpose, even with the previous Stargate series' you could watch any episode and get a general idea of what the charachters are seeking to accomplish.SG-U left you wondering what the blue crap were the charachters trying to accomplish, because they obviously can't go home-but that's the titular goal.So instead of showing a constructive series of events of the haphazard crew trying toget home as fast as they can manage by hook or crook,we get bickering and pointless drama

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it. I love the premise, and like you, I'm really into the mythological and archeological stuff (might be why Daniel's my favorite character). It's a fun action-adventure sci-fi romp, most of the time. But it rarely has a "great" episode, they're usually just good or average, and most of the stories are very safe and predictable. And it's gotten consistently more Star Trekkish as it's gone on, a progression of which I'm not terribly fond. I've seen most of Season 9 and some of Season 10, so I know where the show's headed, I just never saw much of the earlier seasons aside from a couple episodes here and there.

I like Jack (and I'm dreading the day when RDA starts getting bored and doesn't put as much effort in as he has so far), Daniel, and Teal'c. But I hate Carter with the fire of a thousand suns. :klingon:

Definitely hang in there.... for myself, I find that a vast majority of my favorite episodes occur in the back half of season 5 and beyond. 6 & 7 are both very strong, and I personally loved the Ori seasons (9 & 10). In my opinion, I didn't really feel like the issues towards the end had to do with RDA phoning Jack in (who is my favorite character). I think the issue was that O'Neill was used as nothing except a non-stop joke/ sarcasm box. Season 8 was rough because the writers completely stopped taking the character seriously.

Like archeryguy, I really started enjoying the series in the mid-to-late portions of the show. Maybe I'm just that much of a sucker for serialized storytelling. It's not that SG-1 ever goes all Babylon 5 on us or anything, it's just that there seem to be more and more nods to continuity in every little thing the team does later on. Plus, the humor gets more and more refined and whatnot.

I would never say I hated Carter but she's definitely last in line for me, too. Daniel's my favorite, then Jack and Teal'c pretty much tied for second (especially later on with Teal'c, as the writers really start to nail him) and then there's a significant gap before poor Sam.

Hell, I like General Hammond more than Carter.

Yeah, 6 and 7 are terrific. And I liked the Ori seasons a lot, too, not just because I found myself taking the Ori a lot more seriously as villains but also because of the fanboyishness of seeing Browder and Black getting their space on post-Farscape.

Thing about 8... I still really like it, mainly because of its final string of episodes. So much resolution and fun to be had there. The rest of the season is pretty 'eh', but I'd still put it at a more consistent level of quality than many other sci-fi shows.

You all should see the hundreds of archived threads on GateWorld every year from the show's seventh or so sesaon onward. Every year there were all these topics where people claimed SG-1 had set sail forever and was a shadow of its former self. I just never felt that way...
