SGU 2x16 "The Hunt" Discussion SPOILERS

I think the Stasis pod thing is just a setup for a future episode that they planned. They would have done that plot they did on Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise-the one where most of the crew has to be put in stasis to protect it from some danger while one or two crewmembers have to run the ship.

I have a feeling they were planning on using that to resync the date in the show with the air date. They mentioned something about it being 10 months since Icarus. If 1 season = 1 year, we'd be at 36/40 *24 = 21 months now

Not really thinking the discovery of stasis pods is THAT big a deal, they made it sound like that is an incredible discovery on the ship, its a discovery, but not the best ever omg heh.

I don't like monster/animal eps. AND we didn't even see the Stargate in this entire episode, ugh. Show is called Stargate, but we can't see it.

At least they had their BBQ at the end.

Meh

If they could find enough meat at a stop maybe they could throw it in stasis to last a while?

4) The various rifles of the hunting party were all 5.56mm, .223 caliber, that's right, just a fraction of a caliber larger than your .22 rabbit gun. Sure, they're high velocity rounds, but their stopping power against something the size of an elephant would be insignificant. Is there nothing in Destiny's armory larger than 5.56mm? Just some 7.62mm rifles would have been a vast improvement.

Because its Stargate where machine pistols stop armored Jaffa and the Wraith Warriors who were all but unstoppable in the pilot. Assault rifles take down Death Gliders and Darts...... You expect a gate guard or an Air Force cook to have a sniper rifle?

Sniper rifles no.

SAWs or M-240Bs or even some Mossberg 500 shotguns, yes.

Even we armored cavalry in Iraq had those weapons, and we were rarely if ever intended to fight a protracted battle as infantry. Those weapons just sat in the back of our Bradley's "just in case".

I drew gate(ok not Stargate, but still...) guard duty and cook duty at times in Iraq, but I always had grenade launchers and heavy machine guns within a few meters of me. I guess the Army is a lot more loaded for bear than the Airforce.

But the Stargate soldiers are still supposed to be sort of Special Forces, and every Special Forces team I saw in Iraq was far more heavily armed than us normal grunts.

Bah, its a TV show, whatever.

If the sight of a fire signaled to the creatures that the hew-mons were intelligent, shouldn't their firearms have done so earlier? Especially if they were psychic?

If it read Greer's mind all it got was the barbeque and from Scott it got "Chloe's nakded thighs" I doubt if it anything really intelligent from either of them.

These aren't really special forces though, that was kinda the point of the series. They're the 'other guys' that were just assigned to guard Icarus base, the last people that should have ended up there.

A secret government project(Icarus) which is part of another larger program(Stargate Command/Homeworld Command) into which countless billions of dollars are thrown? Anyone associated with it would have been ruthlessly selected and vetted by every intelligence service and selection board even remotely attached to the Stargate.

We don't throw just every Tom, Dick and Mary onto NASA shuttle missions. And the Stargate vetting process(were the writers taking it seriously) would probably be even more strict than the astronaut program.

Which is why the whole "we're the wrong people!" meme which SGU tries to milk has always come off as laughable to me. If the Stargate Program had gone public at the end of SG-1 or SGA, and we now had hundreds or even thousands of civilians poking around the galaxy, I might be able to buy into the idea that we're letting randomly picked and wholly unsuited people off-planet.

Their job was basically to guard a research station that they assumed no one else even knew about. They weren't the ones who were meant to go on the expedition itself, they were basically just staff. Why waste special forces on such seemingly trivial posts? A base on another planet might seem incredible to us, but to the SGC it's fairly run of the mill.

Well on SG-1 they normally had twin M2s guarding Earth's Stargate. However in an emergency evac it would take what, about 4 soldiers to dismount one gun and take a usable amount of ammunition for it?

They mounted an M2 on one of those FRED things (the MALP-esqe things that only carry supplies) once, but those things are so freaking slow I'm surprised they bothered. It did make mincemeat out of a lot of Jaffa.

Tanks were slow in 1917 also ;), the average Jaffa unit wasn't worth much IMO no matter how much martial arts Teal'c did. Reminds me of Worf compared to the average Klingon warriors

I thought the episode would be filler, but found it to be a pretty good character piece with lots going on. It really is a shame that this show is getting cancelled.

Also, I was surprised to see the BBQ. I thought they had second thoughts about killing the deer after their experience with that creature.

As for Eli whining about Rush, that seems pretty realistic to me. People do engage in that sort of talk when it comes to their bosses and coleagues. I liked it when he and Brody stepped around the corner and surprise! Rush was right there. :rommie:

And so, we're back in the fine Stargate tradition of roaming Vancouver's pine forest while firing assault rifles. Too bad the end product is boring. I think someone said the previews reminded them of a SyFy movie of the week. Yeah, that's basically what this felt like. Except things like Sharktopus are actually fun.

And so, upon discovering that they're basically hunting something, Varro and the Lucian Alliance demand their presence because they're the ones with hunting expertise. What is it with the Stargate shows that only people from other planets can hunt, or know anything about tracking something without fancy gear? Be it Teal'c on SG-1 or Ronon on Atlantis, they always rely on the alien warriors to be their guides for hunting and tracking. There are people on Earth who are expert hunters/trackers. Are you telling me that in the decade or so that it's been around, not one of them has joined the Stargate program? To make matters even more ridiculous, fishing is apparentally the only form of hunting that exists on Earth. O'Neill was into fishing, so was Dr. Beckett, and now we learn Young has a thing for it too. I wonder if putting fishing on your resume guarantees you a sweet posting in the Stargate program?

The creature being intelligent and recognizing our heroes have intelligence because they made fire was a bit of a groaner. But then, I suppose we need this sort of "we can't kill what is actually a misunderstood alien being trying to make its own way in the world" thing.

Greer has once again turned into an unstable psycho, this time with a possible near-death experience. I was reminded of Torchwood's "there's nothing when you die" routine when he was talking about his experience. Yeah, I know, that idea didn't originate with Torchwood, but that's where my mind went. On a seperate note, how cool would it be to see Space Deer's head mounted on the wall of Greer's quarters?

The Destiny storyline wasn't all that great, either. Rush is once again depicted as a shady bastard with a possible hidden agenda. Volker is trying to score with Park. Eli is turning into a whiny bitch. And now we've discovered stasis pods. I wonder what direction that's going... ;)

I might have to watch this again, but honestly my first viewing left no impression at all. It was just people shooting at things in the forest. Totally forgettable. I caught a few of the character moments, but as far as having a story of any kind this episode was a total loss.

Would have been more interesting if they found a person or persons in the stasis pods that have been there for thousands of years perhaps.

LOL! Yeah, you're probably right...no intelligent life with those two. :rommie:

I'm glad they did it, survive and all, if you can find game for some meat, go for it. I rolled my eyes when she started talking about that they shouldn't kill animals for food.

The thought that crossed my mind is yeah, it resembles a deer, but how do they know it's not dangerous to ingest? They're on who knows what planet in the middle of nowhere and I would assume there's always the possibility of something being toxic even if it looks tasty. The morality of carnivore versus herbivore seemed silly since they're in a take-what-you-can-get situation since they never know what's around the corner.

Anyway, I thought this was an okay episode. It entertained me even though there are a lot of things I didn't really like about it. C- or something.
