SGU 2x16 "The Hunt" Discussion SPOILERS

I think that the animals are psychic or something.

OH SHIT. They found the stasis pods.

If that Red Shirt doesn't die I will be disappointed.

I liked that the beasts were intelligent and I loved how Rush was playing games with Brody and Eli. Also I am so happy that Varro is no longer a "probie".

If the sight of a fire signaled to the creatures that the hew-mons were intelligent, shouldn't their firearms have done so earlier? Especially if they were psychic?

Wow, you could tell this episode was written by Mallozzi and Mullie. High concept but nothing really happens. Why bring on all the Lucien Alliance people if you were going to kill all but one of them off in an episode without a larger story arc? And kill off at least 8 people, isn't that like over a 10th of the people on the ship, without any mention of the impact it would have on the Destiny?

At least it wasn't like Voyager where the Equinox crew was never mentioned again...

Hah, the Lucian Alliance thing turned out to be like the whole Starfleet/Maquis thing on Voyager. Whoops.

As for the episode itself, it felt like an old standalone SG-1 episode. Monster of the week + trapped in a cave. They probably didn't need the B and C stories and it would have been fine.

At least it wasn't like Voyager where the Equinox crew was never mentioned again...

Janeway reinstates Chakotay to second in command and the Doctor confirms that no permanent damage was done to Seven, who harbors no ill will towards him. Seven comments she will help The Doctor to establish security codes to prevent deletion of his ethical sub-routines in the future. Janeway strips the rank of all the surviving members of Equinox, but integrates them into her crew, although with severe restrictions.

Oh wow, I don't remember that at all. Freaking Voyager.

I liked most of the character moments, and the lack of anything having to do with Earth.

But overall the A-plot, monster hunt thing was just incredibly sloppy.

1) So this monster carries two humans seemingly miles back to its lair. How? We got a good look at it later on. The legs did not articulate properly to carry anything.

2) The monster recognizing the fire as a sign of intelligence, and then TJ bluntly informing we the audience was just silly. Why would a species of big carnivores care if some of their prey were intelligent? Why would TJ of all people even think that? More likely the thing was just afraid of fire.

3) The hunting party was just ridiculous. Noisy, loud, paying little to no attention to their surroundings. I had to laugh at Greer and Varro as they had their various conversations.

4) The various rifles of the hunting party were all 5.56mm, .223 caliber, that's right, just a fraction of a caliber larger than your .22 rabbit gun. Sure, they're high velocity rounds, but their stopping power against something the size of an elephant would be insignificant. Is there nothing in Destiny's armory larger than 5.56mm? Just some 7.62mm rifles would have been a vast improvement.

5) Finally, the body count, and way it was shrugged off or not mentioned was infuriating. Destiny has what, 80 people on it? I'm not sure how many died in this episode, but even two or three dead would really have an impact on the crew. But I guess redshirts do exist, even on Destiny.

-One thing I like about SGU is the bigger emphasis not only on natural elements but also alien wildlife and critters.

- I liked that the red-shirt with TJ survived.

- And also, the crew getting along, laughing, and socializing!? What a difference from season 1.

- Chuckled at Rush trolling his colleagues.

Agreed with these. It sort of put a damper on the ending of the episode. How would a beast recognize fire as intelligent anyway, since it lacks the articulation to create fire on its own? We only connect creating fire with intelligence because of our own human progression, so an animal that has followed an entirely different path would not make the same link, even if it was as intelligent as us.
I wouldn't know a thing about point 4, but obviously they were stuck with whatever they managed to carry from Icarus base. I would have expected them to have some more firepower from when the Lucian Alliance invaded the ship though.
As for point 5, I don't think it would have a huge impact on the ship. Most of them were Lucian Alliance, who didn't really have an important role on the ship. I can't recall how many Earth people there were, but probably not enough to take a chunk out of the episode to focus on it.

I thought it was a decent episode. The hunting storyline was nothing new, so I liked the B and C stories more, even though they were minor. The Rush storyline was fun, and was the most interesting part of the episode for me.

The only thing I can think of with the beastas and fire were if they were domesticated at some point by some other bigger meaner aliens who made fire then maybe they thought their masters had returned....

- Riley has been dead for the whole season. Do we really need a constant reminder of it?
- When did James become such a Debbie Downer?
- Speaking of James, why isn’t she giving Greer orders? Doesn’t she outrank him?
- Eli being the little whiny bitch all the time is really getting grating. He thinks Rush is too bossy? Please.
- Chloe goes back to being totally useless, basically turning into the Deanna Troi of Destiny.
- I think those stasis pods would be a great place to put Chloe, Eli, and T.J. for the rest of the trip.
- This episode suffers from both an A and B and C story that aren’t very interesting or put together well. It’s just a muddled together mess.
- One good thing about this episode was the scene between Greer and James, talking about the darkness he was in after the surgery. One thing season 2.5 has done really well has been these character moments.
- The scenes between T.J. and Reynolds were just painful. Their acting skills combined makes up one full Jolene Blalock.
- Eli wants to solve a problem without Rush and on his own, but he wants Chloe to solve it for him?
- Please no Young-Varro-T.J. love triangle…please….
- I got a kick out of “Becker’s BBQ.”

Greer has power of the contract, James doesn't. ;)
It's one of the things that irritates me with regard to how tptb handle Lt James, because she should be the one Young turns to after Scott, but because she's a reoccurring character, all the important stuff is stunted to Greer. Her rank is simply irrelevant.

Yeah, this ep wasn't that great, much like last week.

At least Lucian Alliance guy got something to do finally.

Rush toying with his team, eh, i thought he was going to stop being such an a hole.

Not really thinking the discovery of stasis pods is THAT big a deal, they made it sound like that is an incredible discovery on the ship, its a discovery, but not the best ever omg heh.

I don't like monster/animal eps. AND we didn't even see the Stargate in this entire episode, ugh. Show is called Stargate, but we can't see it.

At least they had their BBQ at the end.

Meh

I think the Stasis pod thing is just a setup for a future episode that they planned. They would have done that plot they did on Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise-the one where most of the crew has to be put in stasis to protect it from some danger while one or two crewmembers have to run the ship.

Well, compared to empty rooms and hallways, any place that does anything on the ship is pretty neat.
