WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?!?!?!
Seriously, this episode was just downright terrible. I was initially skeptical of this one, trailers made it seem like SG-1's The Changeling, which itself was compared to DS9's Far Beyond the Stars. But after seeing it all I can say is that both Far Beyond the Stars and The Changeling were excellent episodes and works of art compared to this thing.
One thing fundamentally wrong here is that so far in the series I have had no reason to give a shit about Scott. He's been a bland and generic nice guy who sleeps with every girl around. That's it. So really, the fact that he's got some weird alien thing happening to him does not interest me at all.
And then we get to alternate reality dreamland, where he's even more bland and generic living in a bland and generic small town where we see everyone be bland and generic versions of their characters. What I'm trying to say is that things were bland and generic. Hell even the self-parody of the show (the movie Scott and Chloe saw) was terrible and boring. This show sucks even when its making fun of itself!
The parallells between reality and dreamland were just too obvious. Eli is the camera geek, Brody is the bartender, Telford stirs shit up, Rush is vague and enigmatic, and so on. But really, what was the point to dreamland? In The Changeling it explored Teal'c's subconcious, in Far Beyond the Stars it was to make social commentary about racism. But here? Nothing. We learn nothing about Scott, no statements were made about anything. I think they realized Scott moaning in pain in Vancouver's pine forest with his arm in a blue shell wouldn't fill 45 minutes so they pulled dreamland out of their ass to pad the episode out.
It's not like anything interesting or relevant happened in dreamland anyway. It's pretty much the same old melodramatic drivel we've come to expect from this show, just with the characters acting slightly different than usual. Rush and Telford's cryptic comments didn't really amount to anything and only served to provide something for the trailers to make the episode sound interesting.
Speaking of making the trailers interesting, I remember the season trailer had an image of Chloe with her face all weird from teh wedding scene, implying this was a stage in her transformation. Yet here we see it as part of a dream sequence. Disappointing.
As for the real world story, I can't help but wonder that if Chloe or Rush were using their brains, the blood transfusion could have been done a lot sooner and things could have been resolved that much quicker. I suppose Rush wanted to cover his ass, but you'd think Chloe would want to try anything to save Scott. In the end the only thing of consequence is that Scott now has Chloe's Sombreroid abilities. Whoopity-fuckity-doo-dah.
About the only good thing I can say about the episode:
-Cool visuals with Greer and the other guys shooting flamethrowers.
-No montage.
-The women looked better than usual in dreamland.
Overall, I am not impressed at all. Move over Emancipation, the Stargate franchise has a new worst episode.
