I'll be taping this tonight and won't be around for commentary. I've got to get up at 3:30 tomorrow morning to get the Missus downtown for a work event.

I'm here, ready for a new ep of SGU.
I am highly optomistic about this series after seeing Light now. Though it may be a bit slow getting its wheels off the ground, it is building to something awesome IMO.
SGU brings the wonder back to space. They deal with real-world space stuff like aerobraking, slingshotting, trajectories, re-charging energy by flying INTO a star (Bussard Collectors that actually do something!).
The visuals are top notch in this series, some of the best stuff I've ever seen in a TV series. The visual aerobraking around the planet, then the visual flying through the star, it is pretty awesome stuff right there.
Anyone else get the impression that the Ancients "Ancient" technology actually seems more advanced than their later technology like Atlantis? Atlantis seemed so fragile, yet the Destiny seems so much more robust and able to take more of a licking and keep on ticking, I mean flying through a star, wow.
I am so far impressed with the Destiny, I can't wait to learn more.
There are a few relationship things that are annoying, and at times it feels like they are forcing stuff, trying to act grown up and mature, but it is so forced and feels fake, but other than that this series is shaping up to be nice.
The ending of Light was neat, we thought it was all over, then BAM, another problem to solve, and they did it smartly. Then the thing with "What if he knew all along" dun dun dun......
Oh yeah, my grade for Light is a 9/10.

Brent you hit the nail on the head for this episode for me as well. I enjoyed using some of the real-world(well I'm no expert so it seemed it was to me) space-flight principles instead of random technobabble. Maybe the only thing I didn't like is how fast the relationship came together between Chloe and Scott.
Yea, we all knew the Destiny wasn't going to be destroyed and we knew that since 3 regulars were on the shuttle that it was going to make it back to the ship, but the drama in the episode was handled pretty well.

The whole thing was extremely predictable, and I still hate most of the characters.
The ship is awesome though. I don't know why this show costs to much, they never use the Stargate to go anywhere, just make a whole lot of ship[ based episodes.
I'm also thinking the show will last 3 seasons, there just isn't a lot to do, unless they change the whole show. Like in season 4, they figure out how to control the ship and they fly it around and get new people from Earth.

In the Atlantis premier "Rising" it said quote: "Several Million Years Ago" Therefore, Atlantis is at least "Several" (how ever many that is) years old, that is when it took off from Earth. It was only abandoned for the last 10,000 years, that is when the rest of the Ancients went back to Earth.

Yet, it feels more advanced in some ways than Atlantis does. If I were building something that is going across the known universe I would to build it to last. Atlantis on the other hand was always underpowered during the series and relied more on shield technology for structral integrity.
I was thinking the same thing. I defended the danger of space earlier in another thread, but realized that it captures the wonder too.
Agreed again. I have to say though that I don't like how shows and movies portray stars as big orange balls of fire when they should be showing us just how damn bright these things really are. I'm willing to let it go though. What they did, especially with the scenes involving the light coming through the ship's windows, was pretty effective. I guess you could say we got the "filtered" perspective.
Are you refering to the we-have-a-day-to-live sex at the beginning? If not, I'm gonna talk about it anyway. I liked it. What I didn't like though was seeing Chloe get it on with the hunky womanizing soldier, as Quantum put it, instead of Eli. I kinda felt bad for him. On the other hand, when she and Eli do get it on, it'll be something good.
A few more bits and bites...
- They did a good job showing Camile's mixed feelings. She was relieved to be picked, but had to fake being sad as she waled up the stairs. Then ultimately she was truely disturbed as the reality of the situation hit her.
- I liked how they brought up Chloe being a senator's daughter and having to be saved because of it. I'm surprised that Young didn't do anything about it though.
- When the guy who was unconscious got up and looked at the gate, I thought he was going to try to dial out.
- I'm curious about what's going on with Rush too.
Anyway, great episode. I'll give this one a 9.

Well, the star in this episode was a brown dwarf. Most of the energy it emits is in the infrared region of the spectrum unlike our Sun. Brown dwarfs are very dim objects; though, they are also the most common type of star in the Universe. I also bet the shield and glass window thing help keep harmful amounts of visible and invisible light from entering the ship.
I give this episode a 9. It was very well acted and the visuals were excellent.

The pitfalls of being in a 'franchise'-a term I've grown to loathe when used to describe tv shows. In order to make cool new things for the latest incarnation, the older shows take a hit. Granted, Atlantis sat at the bottom of an ocean world unattented for billions of years, while the Destiny had the advantage of making pit stops in each galaxy to keep repair systems online.
As for the hook up, I'm tired of prefacing critiques with the stock I'm not a prude line but, have these 2 even talked all that much since her father died? All I can recall is their talk after the desert planet ep, when we saw that ship detach at the end...Other than that, zilch. It wouldn't have felt so forced if we'd seen them talking to each other as much as we've seen her and Eli actually getting to know one another. Why not cozy up to Lt James, or is she only good for closet rendezvous?
And I agree the end was hampered by trying to force Rush to appear to be soooo Machiavellian. Why did they have to be so ham fisted with that? You could've subtly implied it by having someone wonder outloud, but shrug it off and then cut to Rush with an odd expression on his face staring off into the distance.

I still want to like the show-not saying I hate it, just that it still hasn't pushed me off the fence onto the good program side.
I'll give it a 6, for the very cool-or should that be hot, special effects...
