i have given SGU alot of grief for its lackluster and "boring" episodes..these 2 episodes [common descent, epilogue] are the 2 best eps of the is short lived series...if we had this type of writing and stories in season 1 maybe it would be having a season 3...

Of course this is all subjective but this two-parter of SGU is better than anything I've ever saw from SG1 and SGA which had a combined fifteen seasons to put out something that good. So what's their excuse?

Throughout the entire season 2 I have read comments from folks saying "well, if season one had produced an ep like this the more people would have been watching, blah, blah, blah". Geez, give it up. So many of you can't give the show props unless its a backhanded compliment. Season two has been a very good season. As for season one it was uneven but so were the first seasons of DS9 and B5. Neither of those two shows would have ran their full course in these times and these conditions. It is a shame that SGU won't get a chance to get its full run because I'm sure it would have been amazing. But what I will not do is take the view that it is the writers' fault. Good TV sows die early all the time while bad TV shows can live on for an eternity. Of course by ratings definition those "bad" shows must actually be good ones if they survive, right? Not really. But again it's subjective when it comes to what people think is good and what people think is bad. From my subjective point of view a great sci fi series is going off the air and now what we are left with on SyFy are the light-weight fillers such as Sanctuary and Warehouse 13. However people seem to love those series so I guess I am in the minority.

Great episode! TJ's illness was sort of silly as pressing issue. They know they have at least 5 years before she shows symptoms, so why is everyone suddenly searching right now for the cure? Just make sure you get the database and then search it at leisure on Destiny. Hell, Volker should be the worried one, not TJ.

.

Why should Vlker be worried? He already got a new kidney from Greer.

Anyway I called it last week that the other Volker on the planet would have died soon after their arrival.

Good episode, although weaker than last week due to its meandering nature and lack of any real conflict.

Lots of plot holes detract a bit from this alt-crew arc however.

1) No automated beacons or pockets of life left on the entire planet? That just seems silly.

2) They have a Stargate which already has FTL technology built into it, they should have easily developed a working FTL drive years ago.

3) The colony's split as already mentioned was stupid and arbitrary and ultimate irrelevant to anything(yet).

4) Varro is holding TJ's weight, and rocking his weight on the ladder, but it is only after he tosses her to the side that the ladder breaks?

.

Oh, good grief. This is exactly what I mean. SG1 and SGA were full of plot holes and yet no one obsessed over them. People love to look for any and all flaws on SGU. I could find flaws in every great ep of TNG, DS9, B5 and X-Files if I wanted to. But why nitpick rather than celebrate what's great about an episode?

I was relieved that they followed through on that. It's the sort of thing they could very easily have forgot and goofed.

Why can't destiny just catch up with one of the sub-FTL ships and ask for a copy of the database/archive?

(Also...why didn't this highly advanced 2000 year-old society that *started* with Destiny's knowledge, have FTL...?)

Heh, if Stargate is good about one thing its about Databases. You've got:

1.) The Ancient repository of knowledge head sucker things database.
2.) The Asgard database, that Earth now has.
3.) The database on Atlantis.
4.) The database on Destiny.
5.) The database of a race 2000 years old that was also advanced.

They must love their databases!

Yeah...and it's all enough to keep every scholar on Earth working for centuries to pour through it all and learn from it - propelling mankind millions of years ahead in development!

But no...it's alll a BIG (IMPLAUSIBLE IT'S STILL KEPT A) SECRET.

With the knowledge and technology available to Earth now...we should be able to end hunger and want and disease and explore the stars and unite the galaxies. It's *criminal* they are keeping that tech and knowledge secret from the bulk of mankind! Look at what happened in Hati and now in Japan? That shouldn't happen on a world with that kind of technology! But we'll let an entire country get irradiated beause we have to keep the BIG SECRET! Right...

And ALS? What, with all the Ancient's and Asgard and whatever tech...and things like NANOTECHNLOGY and statis pods...they should EASILY be able to cure TJ's ALS now...or at least put her on ice until they get home and cure her like they did Rodney's sister and many others. (Maybe she could become a Tok'ra host for a while? Isn't that race dying for want of hosts? And yet millions die every year on Earth of incurable diseases many of whom who would .gladly volunteer to hst a Tok'ra in exchange for *NOT DYING*! Even if just a tiny *fraction* did...that would be enough!)

Sorry...I am ranting...but a lot of those doesn't make any sense anymore...and yet I can't stop watching...lol.
Yeah... they really needed to do a disclosure story before the franchise died.

I really hope they never do. Contemporary characters is what sets the franchise apart from most other space faring ones, I'd hate to see that destroyed and replaced with Starfleet 2.0.

Oops! I got lost timeline-wise as to when the transplant took place. I was thinking altVolker died in spite of already having the transplant.

Count me with those who thing SGU has made tremendous strides this year, with the last two eps. outstanding! Damm you Syfy......if you care at all about those who watch, you'll reconsider and give us more, in some form. Otherwise, the few remaining shows that you DO have are gonna be down by at least one more viewer.....

Wrestling....ghosts...paranormal......cooking......what crap! What the hell happened to the SCIENCE FICTION Channel?

You can have relatable contemporary characters in a futuristic space setting (see Babylon 5).

Based on the preview I'm assuming that they find Futura next episode. It's too bad this show is ending now, I've enjoyed quite a bit of this season.

Both countries were on the same planet, Novus. It was even stated in last nights episode that they stopped fighting and ended up coming together and pulling their resources to escape Novus due to the calamity.

they are all "CHEAP" to make...sadly :scream:, i would like to see the franchise go to another channel like SPIKE or A&E ...Spike has full weekends devoted to starwars

At this point, I'm not sure I COULD imagine lesser!

I'd LOVE to see a network change...........never happen, but I wish it would.

For SGU, this was a pretty solid episode, a bit above average because mostly because they focused way too much on the alt-crew, which doesn't further the development of the crew we are stuck with. TJ having ALS just smacks of one of my least favorite writing tendencies, adding more tragedy to character in order to gain the audience's sympathy and really flattens her character down to her knowing she's doomed. I really wonder what the hell the point of Varro was, now that he's been taken out. That wasn't going to add any pathos since he had so little screentime and even though he's a fairly likable guy, being useless for most of the season doesn't earn anyone points with the audience.

Rush cutting that packing foam and then putting it in the air filter was pretty hilarious. I didn't know that stuff could filter out CO2 LOL

I'm not really sure how you could really consider those characters contemporary.

Am I the only one who liked the TJ/Young montage, with him caring for her until the camera panned to her empty chair?

I want a season 3!!!!

Me too, on both counts. This is one of the best episodes of any sci-fi shows I've ever seen.

This show has been amazing this season. Too bad it was cancelled, but at least it goes out on a very strong note.

Actually I critiqued SG1 and SGA much like I do SGU. And as far as magical technology plot holes those shows are worse then SGU. Had I been older and message boards been as developed when TNG, DS9 and B5 aired I would have done the same thing with them.

Celebrating what is good about this or that episode is all well and good, but gushing about the acting, writing, production values or whatever rapidly grows boring(at least for me). Far more interesting is picking episodes apart.

Do not think that just because some of us are willing to point out negatives about a show we are any less of fans. It is just a different angle to approach the discussion.

2) They have a Stargate which already has FTL technology built into it, they should have easily developed a working FTL drive years ago.

A stargate is nothing like an FTL engine on a ship. A stargate is a point-to-point connection through a wormhole that allows instantaneous travel, so far, the only races who know how to build a stargate are the Ancients and the Nox+Tolan working together (and their version was still inferior to the Ancients stargate.)

A Stargate is not like an FTL drive. But the FTL communication network that keeps the gates talking to each other for status updates, as demonstrated by Eli in Common Descent, is similar to an FTL drive.
