SG-U – Darkness (1x04) - (Live Commentary | SPOILERS)

I am curious to see how all the various 'ships lay out, because there seemed to be some chemistry between Scott and Chloe, but then there's also the chemistry between Eli and Chloe...

Overall, the episode wasn't bad. But I'm so used to marathoning my Stargate so it feels odd to be getting the overall arc one piece at a time.

Someone said that they thought they saw the outline of the Gate behind O'Neill in the pilot, indicating that the SGC is now at the Pentagon (maybe under it?)

If that is the case than the Stargate writers are even dumber than I thought.

There is no way that the other countries would ever let the Stargate be in the Pentagon, not a chance in hell.

Since when has Stargate ever presented a realistic depiction of geopolitics? It's best not to get bogged down with Earth-based concerns with this franchise, because it would fall apart really quick if that's where the focus ended up (as evidenced by bomb after bomb of Earth based episodes and scenes across all three series).

I really doubt they would move the Stargate to the Pentagon, though it's plausible that O'Neill might travel back and forth between Washington and Colorado Springs.

Then again, I never would have imagined that they'd really move the chair from Antarctica.

Oh, wow, remember that Ancient charging mat they rigged to recharge their Earthly battery-operated devices?

I just saw a commercial for a wireless charging mat. It makes me wonder how much product placement they managed to squeeze into the show.

Are you people never happy?

You want dark and gritty. You get dark and gritty and now you complain because "oh, of course the power went out", "of course they're flying into a star", "of course they're all going to die"

just watch the damn show for the pure enjoyment of listening to someone tell a story or don't watch the show.

So ..., it seems Young's role is going to be 'get Rush to play well with others' and 'get the others to play with Rush'.

That might take a season. So, what's in store for season 2?

And, what did the group think they were going to accomplish by cornering Ely? Did they think he was going to say "I know and I'm not telling you! nya, nya"?

Young's wife is a drama queen. Why do men always go for the drama queens? Anyway, if she had no intention of reconciling, why did she follow him out of the house to resume the arguement out there?

And Young asking those science guys if they're going to let a college dropout, computer hack pull their asses out of the fire ... was priceless.

True, but I did like that we got a bit of the Lower Decks angle on it - the people who aren't amazing astrophysicists or solved an unsolvable puzzle have just as big a vested interest in what's going on as Eli and Rush do, but feel out of the loop. This was a big thing missing from Voyager actually, the reaction of (both) ships' lower decks crew to what was going on. They just pottered around saying 'yes captain' and manning the astrometrics lab, even when they're just as lost, just as lonely as the senior staff.

 indeed.

Oh, definitely would like more "lower decks" stories, but that particular scene was so ... junior highish.

Well, since Christina Hendricks got married last week and is now off my radar, I'll step up and take Mrs. Colonel on. :)

They've already witnessed the ship stopping to help them gather the supplies it needed to keep them alive. Now they've witnessed the ship power down in a star system, seemingly without having changed its course since it took off from the last stop... which they've even admitted they realize is an astronomical "coincidence."

And despite all of that they now think that -- after hundreds of thousands of years of maintaining itself despite obvious signs of hostile encounters and relatively primitive fuel systems (hello, if this is prior to genetech keys, it's probably prior to ZPMs, too; what the fuck kind of power cells do they think this thing is using) -- the ship is going to make a clumsy mistake as it intentionally and deliberately navigates itself in the solar system? That it's heading to the star to kill everyone?

Do the writers really consider us to be that stupid? I mean, I know its their characters so they can make them as stupid as they want to... but us? Really? Really?

I wasn't as happy with Darkness as the previous episodes. The problems and struggle for survival feel real and you get the sense these folks are in over their head and are screwed. But they just seemed to bitch at each other the whole episode.

They are getting a nice rapport between Eli/Chloe going. Young and Rush play off each other well too.
