SF in Vancouver

Plain Simple

Commodore
Commodore
I recently moved to Vancouver (well, near anyway) and I know that many sf series were filmed there. Most famously (for me) is The X-Files's first five seasons and second film, but I think amongst others also Stargate SG-1 was filmed there?

So, what else? And are there any cool places to check out where you can actually recognise scenes from the series or film?

The 4400
Battlestar Galactica
Bionic Woman
Dead Like Me
The Dead Zone
Eureka
Flash Gordon
Kyle XY
Painkiller Jane
Sanctuary
Smallville
Stargate SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Supernatural

And these are just the Sci-Fi shows that have aired in the past few years. Go back further and you'll find more. Plus several non-SciFi shows too, like Psych.

As for locations you can visit, I know that Caprica City, as seen in BSG, is really Vancouver. And here is a link listing locations featured in Stargate SG-1.

One I definitely recognised was from SN's "Red Sky at Morning" - the scene where the boys realise their car has been stolen is on the docks and promenade at Coal Harbour.

Why were the last four seasons and the first movie of The X-Files not filmed there as well?
Because duchovny insisted on it being moved to LA where he could be near his wife, or else he'd quit. Of course, he quit anyway a few years later.

Did not know that, I thought it would be cheaper to film in Vancouver

It would have been (at the time), but the producers wanted to keep Duchovny and his character on the show for as long as possible, so they moved to L.A. And, in the end, he did give them two and half more seasons, plus four guest spots (three in season nine and one in The Lone Gunmen).

The "h" from http is missing, apart from that the link is okay.

The Wikipedia entry on The X-Files has this to say about the issue:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X-Files said:
David Duchovny had been unhappy with his geographical separation from his wife Téa Leoni, although his discontent was popularly attributed to frustration with climatic conditions in Vancouver.[74] Gillian Anderson also wanted to return home to the United States,[26] and Carter decided to move production to Los Angeles following the fifth season. The season ended in May 1998 with "The End", the final episode shot in Vancouver and the final episode with the involvement of many of the original crew members who had worked on the show for its previous five years, including director and producer R. W. Goodwin and his wife Sheila Larken (who played Margaret Scully and would later return briefly).

Cool, I work in Tollana and the FBI headquarters.

There's also a town called "Kelona" so some can visit Jonas's planet :)

I can always tell when its filmed in Canada because it has that rainy look in most episodes and ofcourse the pine trees.

Is it not cheaper to film there now?

Its not as cheap as it once was, with the declining U.S. dollar, but I think there are still tax incentives that keep shows like Stargate and Battlestar Galactica in town.

Plenty of films have been shot in Vancouver as well, often standing in for Seattle (ugh). Firewall comes to mind. And I just saw The Sixth Day on television and can only assume from the sheer number of Stargate actors that it was shot in Vancouver as well.

Blade 3 used the catwalk from stargate atlantis season 1

^Other way around. That set was built for Blade Trinity and then sold to Atlantis' producers for $1 (Canadian) because it was cheaper to do that than pull it down and store it. Atlantis, and SG-1, got a lot of mileage out of that set.

Just for the record, it's "Kelowna". Stargate's Kelowna was one of three large continents on a planet that eventually ended up being named Langara when the three stopped warring with each other.

seems like more films are filmed in Prague now

Like?

Prague is a popular choice. It can fill in for various generic Eastern European cities and is often used for historical films set in Europe.

They also have good local crews there, which helps a lot.

^Of course, a lot of those things were Czech productions and would therefore obviously be filmed in their capital city.

Kung Fu and Highlander Raven were actually filmed in Toronto and Viper was filmed in Calgary.

Lots of Stephan Cannell tv series from the 80's were filmed in Vancouver.
